What are the characteristics of intertropical convergence zone?

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) lies in the equatorial trough, a permanent low-pressure feature where surface trade winds, laden with heat and moisture, converge to form a zone of increased convection, cloudiness, and precipitation.

What does convergence mean in science?

3a evolutionary biology : independent development of similar traits or features (as of body structure or behavior) in unrelated or distantly related species or lineages : convergent evolution The second mechanism, also well established, is convergence—in which separate organisms, such as birds and bats, independently ...

Is intertropical convergence zone?

The Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is the region that circles the Earth, near the equator, where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. ... Aided by the convergence of the trade winds, the buoyant air rises.

Why does it rain in ITCZ?

The area near the equator with low pressure and converging, rising winds is called the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Water vapor condenses as air rises and cools in the ITCZ, forming clouds and falling as rain.

How does the intertropical convergence zone affect the Philippines What does it brings?

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the imaginary line where winds from the Northern and Southern hemispheres meet, brings cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in Palawan, Visayas and Mindanao.

What is the full form of ITCZ?

ITCZ stands for Intertropical Convergence Zone. It is an area between the Northern and Southern Hemisphere where winds converge from the mid-latitudes blowing equator-ward and winds flowing poleward from the tropics.

What is the difference between monsoon and intertropical convergence zone?

ITCZ - a zonally elongated axis of surface wind confluence of northeasterly (NE) and southeasterly (SE) trade winds in the tropics. Monsoon Trough - the portion of the ITCZ which extends into or through a monsoon circulation, as depicted by a line on a weather map showing the location of minimum sea level pressure.

How long can the doldrums last?

This is designated as the 'ITCZ/Doldrums Corridor'. Within this corridor a Skipper and crew can elect to motor-sail for exactly 6° of latitude and for a maximum of 60 hours.

Where is ITCZ now?

In July and August, over the Atlantic and Pacific, the ITCZ is between 5 and 15 degrees north of the Equator, but further north over the land masses of Africa and Asia. In eastern Asia, the ITCZ may propagate up to 30 degrees north of the Equator.

Why is ITCZ called doldrums?

The rising air mass finally subsides in what is known as the horse latitudes, where the air moves downward toward Earth's surface. Because the air circulates in an upward direction, there is often little surface wind in the ITCZ. ... And that's why they call it the doldrums.

Can deserts be cold?

Although some deserts are very hot, with daytime temperatures as high as 54°C (130°F), other deserts have cold winters or are cold year-round.

What does the ITCZ do?

The ITCZ follows the sun in that the position varies seasonally. It moves north in the Northern Hemisphere summer and south in the Northern Hemisphere winter. Therefore, the ITCZ is responsible for the wet and dry seasons in the tropics.

What is ITCZ Class 9 Brainly geography?

The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterised by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas.

What do you mean by ITCZ Class 9?

The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a broad trough of low pressure in equatorial latitudes. This is where the northeast and the southeast trade winds converge.

What type of word is convergence?

the act of moving toward union or uniformity.

What is the adjective of transport?

transportable. Capable of being transported; easily moved.

What part of speech is convergent?

Convergent can be a noun or an adjective.

Why is the ITCZ not a straight line?

The ITCZ has a mean position north of the equator because there is much more landmass in the Northern Hemisphere as compared to the Southern Hemisphere. Look at a globe and notice how much more land there is in the tropics in the Northern Hemisphere.

Why does the ITCZ move throughout the year?

The shifting of ITCZ is the result of the Earth's rotation, axis inclination and the translation of Earth around the Sun. Seasons are the result of this. ITCZ moves toward the hemisphere with most heat, wich are either hemisphere summers.

How wide are the doldrums?

The doldrums, or ITCZ, are located roughly at the Equator, but they also migrate with the seasons. They are 50 to 250 miles wide, so the rain produced by the rising air is significant. In the Northern Hemisphere's summer, the doldrums migrate as far as 25 degrees north latitude up to southern Asia.

Why does the wind pick up at night?

In the morning, when sunlight returns and begins to warm the surface layer, the wind from above gradually builds downward and returns to the surface. At night, winds above the surface layer often increase in strength because its energy is not dissipated by contact with the ground.
