Heterotopic ossification is a common complication of total hip arthroplasty. Its prevalence is not the same in all of the patient groups. Frequency of HO varies from 15 to 90%.

Is heterotopic ossification rare?

Two rare heritable and developmental forms of heterotopic ossification, fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva and progressive osseous heteroplasia, provide valuable clinical and pathogenetic insights into heterotopic ossification in humans.

Where is heterotopic ossification most common?

The formation of heterotopic ossification after orthopedic trauma has been studied most extensively in the setting of acetabular fractures and elbow fractures. Heterotopic ossification occurs in approximately 40% of patients after operative fixation of an acetabular fracture.

How quickly can heterotopic ossification occur?

HO may develop within days following the spinal cord injury or several months later. HO usually occurs 3-12 weeks after spinal cord injury yet has been known to also develop years later. HO occurs after other injuries, too.

How do you get heterotopic ossification?

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the presence of bone in soft tissue where bone normally does not exist. The acquired form of HO most frequently is seen with either musculoskeletal trauma, spinal cord injury, or central nervous system injury.

What is HETEROTOPIC OSSIFICATION? What does HETEROTOPIC OSSIFICATION mean?

Can you fix heterotopic ossification?

For now, the only way to treat heterotopic ossification is to wait for it to stop growing and cut it out which never completely restores joint function. This new research suggests that there may be a way to treat it at the cellular level.

How can heterotopic ossification be prevented?

Combined radiotherapy and indomethacin was effective in preventing heterotopic ossification after total hip arthroplasty. The evaluation of this efficacy compared with radiotherapy or NSAIDs alone should be the future target of larger randomized designs.

What doctor treats heterotopic ossification?

When heterotopic ossification (HO) is severe or problematic and causes pain, or affects a patient's mobility and function, it should be managed by an orthopaedic surgeon. Occasionally, that involves surgery or a revision procedure to resolve the problem.

What does heterotopic ossification feel like?

The most common symptom of heterotopic ossification is stiffness of a joint. Most people who develop heterotopic ossification cannot feel the abnormal bone, but notice the bone growth getting in the way of normal movements.

What are FOP flare ups?

What is a FOP Flare-up? People living with FOP may experience unpredictable episodes of soft tissue swelling, pain, reduced movement, stiffness, referred to as 'flare‐ups'. These flare-ups usually result in extra bone formation, but not always.

Can heterotopic ossification cancerous?

Although heterotopic ossification has been reported in cancer patients, it was located at the primary and metastatic tumor sites. Parathyroid hormone-related protein in gastric cancers with heterotopic ossification.

When should heterotopic ossification be removed?

In the case of heterotopic ossification, the only effective treatment is excision, also called resection. Dr. Nwachukwu will often delay surgical excision for 5-6 months following the initial hip trauma and/or inciting surgery, allowing the bone growth to mature and for a distinct fibrous capsule to develop.

How do you prevent HO?

Local radiation therapy

Radiating pluripotential mesenchymal cells may effectively prevent the development of HO. A dose of 700-800 cGy of local radiation in the first four post-operative days has shown to prevent HO formation in patients who are at high risk.

What causes heterotopic bone growth?

Causes. Heterotopic ossification of varying severity can be caused by surgery or trauma to the hips and legs. About every third patient who has total hip arthroplasty (joint replacement) or a severe fracture of the long bones of the lower leg will develop heterotopic ossification, but is uncommonly symptomatic.

How common is heterotopic ossification after hip replacement?

Heterotopic ossification (HO) after total hip arthroplasty is a relatively common phenomenon, occurring in up to 60 to 90% of patients.

What is heterotopic ossification hip?

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as pathological bone formation in soft tissues, for example in muscles, where physiologically there is no osseous tissue present. It is one of the most common complications of total hip joint replacement surgery.

What causes excessive bone growth?

Causes of Bone Spurs

The most common cause of bone spurs is joint damage from osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. The cushioning between your joints and the bones of your spine can wear down with age. Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout can also damage your joints.

What is HO trauma?

Traumatic HO occurs in response to injuries such as acetabular fractures, fractures and fracture-dislocations of the elbow, knee and shoulder, blast injuries and burns. Neurogenic HO occurs in response to injury to the central nervous system (CNS) including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and spinal cord injury (SCI).

What is the difference between myositis ossificans and heterotopic ossification?

Myositis ossificans (MO) is the most common form of heterotopic ossification usually within large muscles. Its importance stems in large part from its ability to mimic more aggressive pathological processes. Myositis ossificans is one of the skeletal “don't touch” lesions.

What is ossification of the knee?

New bone formation around the periarticular tissues is called heterotopic ossification (HO), which may be painful and cause a decreased range of motion (ROM) of the knee [1].

What is heterotopic ossification elbow?

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a form of pathologic bone that often occurs in the elbow after a substantial traumatic injury and can complicate the functional outcome of the affected upper extremity. This article is designed to help the treating therapist better understand the complex process of HO.

When do FOP symptoms start?

During early childhood, most of those with FOP form painful fibrous nodules, or tumor-like swellings, over the neck, back and shoulders. These nodules often develop after a child experiences some sort of trauma to the body, such as a bump or fall. Episodes also can occur without any warning or may not occur at all.

Is FOP more common in males or females?

Prevalence of recurrent severe headaches (HA) (26 %) was similar to that in the general population, but prevalence in females with FOP (36 %) was almost fourfold greater than in males.

What causes Stoneman syndrome?

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is caused by a mutation of the gene ACVR1. The mutation affects the body's repair mechanism, causing fibrous tissue including muscle, tendons, and ligaments to become ossified, either spontaneously or when damaged as the result of trauma.

How many people get Stoneman?

The diseasecondition is characterized by abnormal ectopic ossification of the tendons, ligaments, skeletal muscles, and other soft tissues of the body. There is no involvement of smooth muscles in this disorder. The reported incidence of this condition is 1 in 2 million people.
