Amniota, a group of limbed vertebrates that includes all living reptiles (class Reptilia), birds (class Aves), mammals (class Mammalia), and their extinct relatives and ancestors.

What are considered amniotes?

Amniotes are a clade of tetrapod vertebrates comprising the reptiles, birds, and mammals. Amniotes are characterized by having an egg equipped with an amnion, an adaptation to lay eggs on land or retain the fertilized egg within the mother.

Which animals are not amniotes?

The anamniotes are an informal group comprising the fishes and the amphibians, the so-called "lower vertebrates", which lay their eggs in water. They are distinguished from the amniotes, the "higher vertebrates" (reptiles, birds and mammals), which lay their eggs on land or retain the fertilized egg within the mother.

What are the three amniotes?

• Class Reptilia (reptiles) Subclass Anapsida ("proto-reptiles", possibly including turtles) ...
• Class Aves (birds) ...
• Class Mammalia (mammals)

What is not an Amniote?

The animal that is NOT an amniote is A) bullfrog. Amniotes are vertebrates that are within an amnion during embryonic or fetal development. Mammals...

Do all amniotes lay eggs?

Because reptiles, birds, and mammals all have amniotic eggs, they are called amniotes. The duck-billed platypus and some other mammals also lay eggs. But most mammals have evolved amniotic eggs that develop inside the mother's womb, or uterus, and so lack a shell.

Is a frog an amniote?

Salamanders, frogs, and other living "amphibians" are in a quite derived lineage of tetrapods, called Lissamphibia. Reptiles and mammals are members of a group called Amniota (the amniotes). Amniotes have an amniotic egg, which typically has a hard covering to prevent desiccation.

Which groups are amniotes?

Amniota, a group of limbed vertebrates that includes all living reptiles (class Reptilia), birds (class Aves), mammals (class Mammalia), and their extinct relatives and ancestors.

Are amniotes monophyletic?

Amniotes is the group of reptiles, birds, and mammals. They all develop through an embryo that is enclosed within a membrane called an amnion. ... Unlike the reptiles, amniotes are a monophyletic group.

How do amniotes breathe?

In amniotes, the primarily fully terrestrial vertebrates, lungs are the principle sites for air breathing and their anatomy exhibits tremendous structural diversity.

What is the difference between Amniotes and Anamniotes?

Amniotes are higher vertebrates who have an amnion during their embryonic stage. Anamniotes are lower vertebrates who do not have an amnion during their embryonic stage.

Is egg white amniotic fluid?

The amniotic egg is the key characteristic of amniotes. ... The albumin, or egg white, outside of the chorion provides the embryo with water and protein, whereas the fattier egg yolk contained in the yolk sac provides nutrients for the embryo, as is the case with the eggs of many other animals, such as amphibians.

What are mammals that lay eggs called?

Only two kinds of egg-laying mammals are left on the planet today—the duck-billed platypus and the echidna, or spiny anteater. These odd “monotremes” once dominated Australia, until their pouch-bearing cousins, the marsupials, invaded the land down under 71 million to 54 million years ago and swept them away.

What are amniotes give examples?

The anamniotes are a group comprised of the fishes and amphibians. They are vertebrates that do not belong to the clade Amniota. Amniota is a group of vertebrates that include the reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Do amniotes have milk?

While all of these amniotes still have amniotic sacs, they also have very different methods of reproducing. The monotremes, like the platypus, still lay eggs in nests. When the young hatch, they feed them milk from glands in their skin, like all other mammals.

Are amniotes monophyletic or Polyphyletic?

In contrast, Amniota itself is a clade, which is a monophyletic group.

When did the first true amniotes appear?

Amniotes first appeared in the fossil record about 318 million years ago and their early evolution, diversification, ecology and phylogenetic relationships have received considerable and increasing interest and research attention over the past decades.

Are eggs a Synapomorphy?

Eggs with amniotic fluid is a synapomorphy for Amniota, but a symplesiomorphy for all of its subclades (e.g., Mammalia, Reptilia, Testudines, etc.) ... Eggs with amniotic fluid evolved in the common ancestor of all amniotes, and is a synapomorphy for Amniota; Etc.

Why is egg often called an amniotic egg?

The fluid inside the amnion, called amniotic fluid, acts as a cushion to help protect the developing embryo from physical danger. Eggs that contain an amnion to protect the embryo are referred to as amniotic eggs. ... There is a yolk sac inside of the egg that provides the nutrients to feed the developing embryo.

Are all amniotes tetrapods?

Tetrapods can be defined in cladistics as the nearest common ancestor of all living amphibians (the lissamphibians) and all living amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals), along with all of the descendants of that ancestor.

Is a shark an amniote?

Amniotes include mammals, reptiles, birds, and the extinct mammal-like reptiles (theropsids) and dinosaurs. Of all 38 animal phyla, only one has amniote members — Chordata, and even then, many chordates, which include fish, sharks, rays, and amphibians, are not amniotes.

Is a turtle an amniote?

Turtles are classified as amniotes, along with other reptiles (including birds) and mammals. Like other amniotes, turtles breathe air and do not lay eggs underwater, although many species live in or around water.

Are salamander eggs amniotic?

Most amphibians live part of their lives in the water and part of their lives on the land. Amphibians are four-legged animals that don't have amniotic eggs. Amniotic eggs have a membrane called the amnion. ... Toads, frogs, salamanders, and newts are all amphibians.

Do Amniotes have a placenta?

The amniotic egg is the key characteristic of amniotes. ... In mammals, membranes that are homologous to the extra-embryonic membranes in eggs are present in the placenta. Additional derived characteristics of amniotes include waterproof skin, due to the presence of lipids, and costal (rib) ventilation of the lungs.

What did Amniotes evolve from?

The first amniotes evolved from amphibian ancestors approximately 340 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. The early amniotes diverged into two main lines soon after the first amniotes arose. The initial split was into synapsids and sauropsids.
