The superior temporal gyrus contains the primary auditory cortex, which is responsible for processing sounds. ... The superior temporal gyrus also includes the Wernicke's area, which (in most people) is located in the left hemisphere. It is the major area involved in the comprehension of language.

What is the role of the superior temporal gyrus?

The superior temporal gyrus (STG) is implicated in the processing of eye movements, as well as in the visual analysis of social information conveyed by gaze and body movement (Allison et al., 2000; Hoffman and Haxby, 2000; Pelphrey et al., 2005; Puce et al., 1998).

What happens when the superior temporal gyrus is damaged?

Damage to the posterior parietal lobe (or superior temporal gyrus) can lead to a striking global modulation of visual awareness called neglect, in which a patient completely ignores or does not respond to objects in the contralateral hemifield (Driver & Mattingley, 1998).

What is the superior border of the superior temporal gyrus?

The superior temporal gyrus is bounded by: the lateral sulcus above; the superior temporal sulcus (not always present or visible) below; an imaginary line drawn from the preoccipital notch to the lateral sulcus posteriorly.

What does the superior temporal sulcus do?

The superior temporal sulcus, and often the temporoparietal junction, is a brain region that is important for numerous aspects of social cognition. This region is typically active during tasks of cognitive empathy and perspective-taking (Frith & Frith, 2006; Saxe & Kanwisher, 2003).

What is the fusiform gyrus responsible for?

The right fusiform gyrus is responsible for facial recognition, and its activation is reduced in response to happy faces in comparison with HCs. Modulation of activity in the facial processing area has been suggested to contribute to changes in the salience of such emotional stimuli.

Where is the gyrus?

A gyrus (plural: gyri) is the name given to the bumps ridges on the cerebral cortex (the outermost layer of the brain). Gyri are found on the surface of the cerebral cortex and are made up of grey matter, consisting of nerve cell bodies and dendrites.

Where is the superior temporal gyrus located?

The superior temporal gyrus is situated at the topmost aspect of the temporal lobe, lying inferior to the lateral sulcus and superior to the superior temporal sulcus.

What does the STS in the brain do?

The superior temporal sulcus (STS) is the chameleon of the human brain. Several research areas claim the STS as the host brain region for their particular behavior of interest. Some see it as one of the core structures for theory of mind. For others, it is the main region for audiovisual integration.

What supplies the superior frontal gyrus?

Blood Supply and Lymphatics

The frontal cortex receives its blood supply from two branches of the internal carotid artery: the anterior cerebral arteries and the middle cerebral arteries. The superior and medial aspects of the cortex receive its supply from the smaller anterior cerebral artery.

Can you recover from temporal lobe damage?

While temporal lobe damage cannot be reversed, functions affected by the damage can be reorganized and relearned by healthy regions of the brain. The brain possesses a dynamic ability to heal itself and allow undamaged portions of the brain to take over control of damaged functions called neuroplasticity.

How do you know if your temporal lobe is damaged?

Kolb & Wishaw (1990) have identified eight principle symptoms of temporal lobe damage: 1) disturbance of auditory sensation and perception, 2) disturbance of selective attention of auditory and visual input, 3) disorders of visual perception, 4) impaired organization and categorization of verbal material, 5) ...

What are the symptoms of occipital lobe damage?

• Defects in vision (Visual Field Cuts).
• Difficulty with locating objects in environment.
• Difficulty with identifying colors (Color Agnosia).
• Production of hallucinations.
• Visual illusions – inaccurately seeing objects.
• Word blindness – inability to recognize words.

What is inferior temporal gyrus?

The inferior temporal gyrus is the anterior region of the temporal lobe located underneath the central temporal sulcus. ... The IT cortex in humans is also known as the Inferior Temporal Gyrus since it has been located to a specific region of the human temporal lobe.

What is the function of the Wernicke area?

Wernicke area, region of the brain that contains motor neurons involved in the comprehension of speech. This area was first described in 1874 by German neurologist Carl Wernicke.

What is the temporal lobe responsible for?

The temporal lobes are also believed to play an important role in processing affect/emotions, language, and certain aspects of visual perception. The dominant temporal lobe, which is the left side in most people, is involved in understanding language and learning and remembering verbal information.

What is the insula?

The insula is a small region of the cerebral cortex located deep within the lateral sulcus, which is a large fissure that separates the frontal and parietal lobes from the temporal lobe.

What is the angular gyrus?

The angular gyrus is a portion of the parietal lobe of the brain. It is one of the two parts of the inferior parietal lobule, the other part being the supramarginal gyrus. It plays a part in language and number processing, memory and reasoning ¹.

What does the lingual gyrus do?

The lingual gyrus is a structure in the visual cortex that plays an important role in the identification and recognition of words. Studies have implicated the lingual gyrus as being involved in modulating visual stimuli (especially letters) but not whether or not the stimulus was a word.

What is the superior temporal gyrus supplied by?

Arterial supply

The superior temporal gyrus receives blood from the middle cerebral artery via all four main temporal branches: the temporopolar artery; anterior temporal artery, middle temporal artery and posterior temporal artery ².

Where is Broca's area?

New research shows that Broca's area, located in the frontal cortex and shown here in color, plans the process of speech by interacting with the temporal cortex, where sensory information is processed, and the motor cortex, which controls movements of the mouth.

What happens in the temporal lobe?

The function of the temporal lobe centers around auditory stimuli, memory, and emotion. The temporal lobe contains the primary auditory complex. This is the first area responsible for interpreting information in the form of sounds from the ears.

Which of the following is a gyrus?

gyri) is a ridge on the cerebral cortex. It is generally surrounded by one or more sulci (depressions or furrows; sg. sulcus). Gyri and sulci create the folded appearance of the brain in humans and other mammals.

What is the definition of gyrus?

: a convoluted ridge between anatomical grooves especially : convolution sense 2.
