Logical Equivalence: Two statements are logically equivalent if, and only if, their resulting forms are logically equivalent when identical statement variables are used to represent component statements.

What do you mean by logical equivalence?

Logical Equivalence. Definition. Two statement forms are called logically equivalent if, and only if, they have identical truth values for each possible substitution for their. statement variables.

What is logical equivalence and examples?

Now, consider the following statement: If Ryan gets a pay raise, then he will take Allison to dinner. This means we can also say that If Ryan does not take Allison to dinner, then he did not get a pay raise is logically equivalent.

What is logical equivalence in math?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. In logic and mathematics, statements and are said to be logically equivalent if they are provable from each other under a set of axioms, or have the same truth value in every model.

How do you use logical equivalence?

Two logical statements are logically equivalent if they always produce the same truth value. Consequently, p≡q is same as saying p⇔q is a tautology. Beside distributive and De Morgan's laws, remember these two equivalences as well; they are very helpful when dealing with implications. p⇒q≡¯q⇒¯pandp⇒q≡¯p∨q.

Propositional Logic − Logical Equivalences

Why do we say that the Biconditional defines logical equivalence?

Definition. Logical equality (also known as biconditional) is an operation on two logical values, typically the values of two propositions, that produces a value of true if and only if both operands are false or both operands are true.

What is the difference between logical equivalence and implication?

This suggests an indirect way of proving P ⇒ Q: namely, we can prove its contrapositive. Logical equivalence guarantees that this is a valid proof method: the implication is true exactly when the contrapositive is true; so if we can show the contrapositive is true, we know the original implication is true too!

How do you write a logically equivalent statement?

Two expressions are logically equivalent provided that they have the same truth value for all possible combinations of truth values for all variables appearing in the two expressions. In this case, we write X≡Y and say that X and Y are logically equivalent.

What is equivalence in discrete mathematics?

Two logical expressions are said to be equivalent if they have the same truth value in all cases. Sometimes this fact helps in proving a mathematical result by replacing one expression with another equivalent expression, without changing the truth value of the original compound proposition.

What is the meaning of its equivalent?

ənt/ C1. having the same amount, value, purpose, qualities, etc.: She's doing the equivalent job in the new company but for more money.

What is logical equivalence in discrete structure?

Logical equivalence is a type of relationship between two statements or sentences in propositional logic or Boolean algebra. ... A proposition is a declarative sentence (a sentence that declares a fact) that is either true or false.

What are equivalent statements?

Equivalent Statements are statements that are written differently, but hold the same logical equivalence. Case 1: “ If p then q ” has three equivalent statements.

What propositions are logically equivalent?

The propositions are equal or logically equivalent if they always have the same truth value. That is, p and q are logically equivalent if p is true whenever q is true, and vice versa, and if p is false whenever q is false, and vice versa. If p and q are logically equivalent, we write p = q.

What is equivalence in computer science?

In theoretical computer science and formal language theory, the equivalence problem is the question of determining, given two representations of formal languages, whether they denote the same formal language.

Is if and only if the same as equivalence?

If and only if both are true exclusively for the same truth value distributions, the equivalence applies and so the meta-logical statement ¬(P∨Q)≡(¬P∧¬Q) is true.

Which one of the following is a proposition?

A proposition is a declarative sentence that is either true or false (but not both). For instance, the following are propositions: “Paris is in France” (true), “London is in Denmark” (false), “2 < 4” (true), “4 = 7 (false)”.

What is equivalence in propositional logic?

equivalence, also called equivalence of propositions, in logic and mathematics, the formation of a proposition from two others which are linked by the phrase “if, and only if.” The equivalence formed from two propositions p and q also may be defined by the statement “p is a necessary and sufficient condition for q.”

What is equivalence relation in maths?

In mathematics, an equivalence relation is a binary relation that is reflexive, symmetric and transitive. The relation "is equal to" is the canonical example of an equivalence relation. ... Two elements of the given set are equivalent to each other, if and only if they belong to the same equivalence class.

What is logically equivalent to P and Q?

Two propositions p and q are logically equivalent if their truth tables are the same. Namely, p and q are logically equivalent if p ↔ q is a tautology. If p and q are logically equivalent, we write p ≡ q.

What is logically equivalent to the inverse?

Since an inverse is the contrapositive of the converse, inverse and converse are logically equivalent to each other.

Is there any practical significance to logical equivalence?

Logical equivalence is important in the design of digital circuits. Several circuits may be logically equivalent, in that they all have identical truth table s. The goal of the engineer is to find the circuit that performs the desired logical function using the least possible number of gates.

Are P → Q → R and P → Q → are logically equivalent?

Since columns corresponding to ¬(p∨q) and (¬p∧¬q) match, the propositions are logically equivalent. ... Since columns corresponding to p∨(q∧r) and (p∨q)∧(p∨r) match, the propositions are logically equivalent. This particular equivalence is known as the Distributive Law.
