Hershey and Chase experimented with radioactively labeled phosphorus and sulphur to determine that DNA and not protein is the genetic material.

What part of the phage did Hershey and Chase label with radioactive 32P?

Hershey and Chase labeled the phage DNA with radioactive 32P. The phage used in the experiment consisted of a DNA molecule surrounded by a protein coat.

What did Hershey and Chase discover using radioactive labeling?

Hershey and Chase used radioactive isotopes to label a bacteriophage. ... After allowing the bacteriophage to infect the bacteria, the presence of radioactive phosphorus in the bacteria confirmed that DNA was the genetic material found in genes.

Why did Hershey and Chase chose to radioactively label the sulfur?

Since phosphorus is contained in DNA but not amino acids, radioactive phosphorus-32 was used to label the DNA contained in the T2 phage. Radioactive sulfur-35 was used to label the protein sections of the T2 phage, because sulfur is contained in protein but not DNA. ... These bacteria were lysed to release phage progeny.

What did Hershey and Chase set out to determine with their experiment?

Hershey and Chase set out to determine what molecule served as the unit of inheritance. They completed a series of experiments in which E. coli was infected by a T2 virus.

Hershey and Chase experiment

Which element was radioactively tagged by Hershey and Martha Chase in their experiments?

Hershey and Chase marked phages by incorporating radioactive isotopes of phosphorus and sulfur in those phages. They allowed some phages to replicate by infecting bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli, or E. Coli, that scientists had grown in radioactive sulfur.

How did Hershey and Chase label viral DNA and viral protein?

How did Hershey and Chase label viral DNA and viral protein so that they could be distinguished? DNA was labeled with radioactive phosphorus. Proteins were labeled with radioactive sulfer. ... coli were infected by the phage, and there was more radioactive phosphorus that entered.

How did Hershey and Chase differentiate between DNA and protein in the experiment while proving that DNA is the genetic material?

Hershey and Chase worked with bacteriophage and E. coli to prove that DNA is the genetic material. They used different radioactive isotopes to label DNA and protein coat of the bacteriophage. ... Hence, it was proved that DNA is the genetic material as it was transferred from virus to bacteria.

How did Hershey and Chase tag the bacteriophages and why was this important?

What radioactive element did the scientists use to tag the DNA within the bacteriophage? Correct! ... They knew that DNA contains phosphorus atoms but no sulfur, and that proteins contain sulfur atoms but no phosphorus. Hershey and Chase used radioactive phosphorus or sulfur to selectively label phage DNA and protein.

How did Hershey and Chase confirm Avery's results?

8. How did Hershey and Chase confirm Avery's results? Avery said that DNA transmits genetic information from one generation to the next. Hershey and Chase concluded that the genetic material of the bacteriophage was DNA and not protein, confirming what Avery said.

How did Hershey and Chase use radioactivity to draw a conclusion about proteins and DNA quizlet?

Hershey and Chase studied bacteriophages which are viruses that attack bacteria. They labeled the bacteriophage with radioactive isotopes to see where it goes when a virus attacks. ... They discovered that nearly all the radioactivity was found in phosphorus, confirming that DNA contains genetic material, not protein.

Why did Hershey and Chase not tag the nitrogen component of DNA?

Why did Hershey and Chase not tag the nitrogen component of DNA? They decided to label the nitrogen of the DNA, rather than the phosphate. Thus, labeling the nitrogens would provide a stronger signal than labeling the phosphates.

Why did Hershey and Chase use the isotopes 32P and 35S in their experiments quizlet?

Both preparations of infected bacteria would exhibit radioactivity. Why did Hershey and Chase use the isotopes 32P and 35S in their experiments? ... The bacteria were in the pellet, and many contained the radioactive viral DNA.

What part of the phage enters the bacterial cell?

Terms in this set (5) What part of the phage entered the bacterial cell following infection? phage protein enters the host cell. 32P remained inside the cells after vigorous shaking.

Why did Hershey and Chase use 32P and 35S in their experiments instead of the radioactive isotopes 14c or 13n?

Why were 32P and 35S chosen for use in the Hershey/Chase experiment? ... The experiment demonstrated that most of the 32p-labeled material (DNA) was injected, which the phage ghosts (protein coats) remained outside of the bacterium. Therefore, nucleic acid/DNA must be the genetic material.

What did the Hershey-Chase experiment demonstrate quizlet?

Thus, the Hershey-Chase experiment helped confirm that DNA, not protein, is the genetic material. Hershey and Chase's experiment concluded that little sulfur containing material entered the bacterial cell.

What did the Hershey-Chase experiment prove quizlet?

What did the Hershey-Chase experiment do? it provided evidence that DNA is the genetic material of viruses.

What did Hershey & Chase tag the bacteriophages with?

In experiments conducted in 1951-52, Hershey and Chase used radioactive phosphorus to tag the phage DNA and radioactive sulphur to tag the protein. These tagged phages were then allowed to infect a bacterial culture and begin the process of replication.

What is the major difference between DNA and protein?

DNA contains the genetic information of all living organisms. Proteins are large molecules made up by 20 small molecules called amino acids. All living organisms have the same 20 amino acids, but they are arranged in different ways and this determines the different function for each protein.

What combination of radiolabeling is correct in case of Hershey and Chase demonstration of DNA as genetic material in T2 bacteriophage?

Explanation: The two factors considered by Hershey and Chase were the simple composition of T2 bacteriophage, that is, DNA and protein. Radiolabeling of only one element was required and therefore 32P and 35S were chosen as the two radioactive isotopes.

How did Hershey and Chase show that DNA is passed to new phages in phage reproduction?

Hershey and Chase used the radioactive isotope P32 to and S 35 to demonstrate that DNA is passed to new phage particles during phage reproduction. ... The presence of the P32 in the progeny phage indicated that the infecting phage had passed DNA on to the progeny phage.

Which molecule is radioactively labeled when adding 32P to organisms in culture?

32P can be used to study the uptake of DNA or RNA in a cell culture. A current study using 32P investigates the uptake of a radioactively labeled double-stranded RNA, an important molecule for RNA interference, which is a mechanism that silences gene expression at mRNA level.

Which of the following was illustrated in the experiment by Hershey and Chase?

Which of the following was illustrated in the experiment by Hershey and Chase? DNA exhibits a double helix structure.

Which of the following facts did Hershey and Chase?

In trying to determine whether DNA or protein is the genetic material, Hershey and Chase made use of which of the following facts? Answer: DNA contains phosphorus, whereas protein does not. DNA contains sulfur, whereas protein does not.
