In pteridophytes, prothallus produces antheridia and archegonia. Pteridophytes are spores producing plants. ... The sporophyte bears sporangia that develop spores by meiosis and they form microspores that are haploid; these microspores germinate to give rise to gametophyte called prothallus.

What does the prothallus produce?

The prothallus develops independently for several weeks; it grows sex organs that produce ova (archegonia) and flagellated sperm (antheridia). The sperm are able to swim to the ova for fertilization to form a diploid zygote which divides by mitosis to form a multicellular sporophyte.

Which gametes are produced on the prothallus of pteridophytes?

• The free-living, multicellular and photosynthetic gametophytes of pteridophytes are called as the prothallus.
• Pteridophytes show alternation of generations. ...
• The gametophytes (prothallus) produces the male sex organs called antheridia and female sex organs called archegonia.
• So the correct option is B.

Does the prothallus produce gametes or spores?

Prothallium, the small, green, heart-shaped structure (gametophyte) of a fern that produces both male and female sex cells (gametes). The prothallium forms from a spore.

What do pteridophytes produce?

A pteridophyte is a vascular plant (with xylem and phloem) that disperses spores. Because pteridophytes produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are sometimes referred to as "cryptogams", meaning that their means of reproduction is hidden.

In pteridophytes, prothallus produces

What do you mean by Prothallus?

1 : the gametophyte of a pteridophyte (such as a fern) that is typically a small flat green thallus attached to the soil by rhizoids. 2 : a greatly reduced structure of a seed plant corresponding to the pteridophyte prothallus.

Do Pteridophytes produce fruit?

Pteridophytes or Pteridophyta, are vascular plants that reproduce and disperse via spores. Because they produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are referred to as cryptogams. ... The seeds are produced through cone-like structures instead of inside a fruit or fleshy covering.

Which structure produce gametes in the prothallus?

Prothallium, the small, green, heart-shaped structure (gametophyte) of a fern that produces both male and female sex cells (gametes). The prothallium forms from a spore.

What are the functions of prothallus?

• Assist in reproduction.
• Produce gametes, both the male and female gametes.
• Provide nutrition to the zygote.
• Protection of the zygote in adverse conditions and environmental stress.
• Prothallus also serves as the food source of many herbivores.

Is prothallus multicellular or unicellular?

Prothallus is a multicellular structure. It contains both antheridia and archegonia.

Do pteridophytes prothallus?

Prothallus of pteridophytes is inconspicuous small, multicellular, free living photosynthetic thalloid gametophyte. Haploid spore germinats to form a flat green heart shaped prothallus. It is monoecious, i.e., both sex organ male (antheridia) and female (archegonia) are present.

Is prothallus present in all pteridophytes?

The diploid sporophyte represents a dominant, independent, photosynthetic and vascular plant body. Haploid gametophyte is prothallus, which is multicellular, saprophytic/autotrophic, independent, short-lived, called prothallus. This pattern is called haplodiplontic lifestyle, which is displayed by all pteridophytes.

Is prothallus in pteridophytes vascular?

The fern gametophyte is a small (approximately 5 mm), bisexual, heart-shaped plant called a prothallus. The prothallus is haploid, since it grew from a spore which had been formed by meiosis. It does not have any vascular tissue and uses small rhizoids to anchor it to the ground.

What is being produced inside an Antheridium?

An antheridium is a haploid structure or organ producing and containing male gametes (called antherozoids or sperm).

Which of the following Pteridophytes belong to class Pteropsida?

-Pteris and Adiantum- Pteris belongs to the Pteropsida class and Adiantum is a member of a class called Pteropsida.

Is prothallus present in selaginella?

Answer: Unlike other pteridophytes, vegetative prothallus are not formed in selaginella. ... The antherozoids of Selaginella are the smallest among the vascular plant. 3. Development of gametophyte from spore start before dehiscence of spore, thus it is known as Precocious or In-situ germination.

What are Homosporous pteridophytes?

Homosporous pteridophytes are the type of pteridophytes that produce only one type of spores in their sporophytes. These spores are equal in their size, shape, and sex. Moreover, these pteridophytes have only one type of sporangia for the production of these spores.

What are the function of the Rhizoids in the prothallus?

It doesn't have roots, stems or leaves, but it does have rhizoids that anchor it to the soil and help with absorption. The underside of the prothallus is where the gametes are produced from the male and female sex organs. The prothallus has both male and female sex organs.

What is developed on prothallus of the nephrolepis?

Prothallus is monoecious. At maturity antheridia are first to appear anteroposteriorly on the posterior side of the cushion. Development and structure of antheridium is similar to Pteridium. A mature antheridium is large and spherical. At maturity it consists of 32 spermatocytes.

Do mosses have prothallus?

Summary - Protonema vs Prothallus

It is a characteristic feature of all mosses and many of the liverworts except in hornworts. The protonema is mainly composed of two types of cells; chloronemata and caulonemata. Prothallus is the gametophyte stage of the life cycle of ferns and other pteridophytes.

Is prothallus monoecious or dioecious?

The spores germinate to give rise to the gametophyte known as prothallus which is green and bears sex organs – antheridia and archegonia. The homosporous pteridophytes form monoecious prothallus whereas the heterosporous pteridophytes form the dioecious prothallus.

What are the spore producing structure in pteridophytes?

means of spores which are produced in small capsules called sporangia. groups, but they are always found on the sporophyte. In some pteridophytes, the sporangia are borne on stems. In some others, the sporangia are borne either on the leaves (foliar) or in their axils (between the leaves and the stem).
