How many heart chambers do Chondrichthyes have?

Species in this class have paired fins, hard scales, a two-chambered heart, and a pair of nostrils. Most species have 5-7 gill slits on each side of their body.

What type of circulatory system do Chondrichthyes have?

Sharks have a simple circulatory system composed of an auricle and a ventricle. Blood flows from the ventricle to the ventral aorta. From there blood moves into the branchial arteries and the capillaries located in the gills.

What are characteristics of Chondrichthyes?

• They belong to the same phylum Pisces.
• They both have endoskeleton and exoskeleton.
• They can breathe through gills.
• They have jaws and paired appendages.
• They can be oviparous, viviparous, or oviviviparous.

What are two major features of Chondrichthyans?

• Resemble bony fish and terrestrial vertebrates in having jaws and paired appendages.
• An electroreceptive system is well developed.
• Endoskeleton entirely cartilaginous.
• No swim bladder or lung.

Fish: Class Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes

In which fishes cartilaginous skeleton is present?

Cartilaginous fishes (chondrichthyes) represent the oldest surviving jawed vertebrates and, as the name suggests, have a skeleton made out of cartilage. They include sharks, rays, and skates (elasmobranchii) and chimeras (holocephali).

What features are characteristic of actinopterygii?

• In vertebrate: Annotated classification. Subclass Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes) Generally lack choanae; no fleshy base to paired fins; no internal nares; air sacs usually function as swim bladder; skeleton usually well ossified. ...
• In fish: Annotated classification.

What are the main characteristics of osteichthyes?

Class - Osteichthyes

Bony fishes share several distinguishing features: a skeleton of bone, scales, paired fins, one pair of gill openings, jaws, and paired nostrils. Osteichthyes includes the largest number of living species of all scientific classes of vertebrates, more than 28,000 species.

What is chondrichthyes and osteichthyes?

Definition. Chondrichthyes refers to a class of fishes that includes those with a cartilaginous skeleton while Osteichthyes refers to a class of fishes that includes those with a bony skeleton.

Which animal heart is S-shaped and two chambered?

A shark's heart is a two-chambered S-shaped tube, small in proportion to body size. Blood flows from the heart to the gills and then to body tissues.

Where is a fish heart?

The heart is located a little behind and below the gills. The typical fish heart has four chambers, however unlike mammals, blood moves through all four in sequence. Venous blood enters the sinus venosus (a thin walled sac) then flows into the atrium, followed by the ventricle (a thick walled pump).

Does a sponge have a circulatory system?

Sponges do not have nervous, digestive or circulatory systems. Instead, most rely on maintaining a constant water flow through their bodies to obtain food and oxygen and to remove wastes.

Do amphibians have a heart?

The amphibian heart is generally of a tripartite structure, with a divided atrium but a single ventricle.

Do birds have a 2 chambered heart?

Birds, like mammals, have a 4-chambered heart (2 atria & 2 ventricles), with complete separation of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs, while the left ventricle pumps blood to the rest of the body.

How many chambers are found in the heart of a hagfish and lamprey *?

The lamprey heart has two chambers, with components that include neural crest-derived elements in jawed vertebrates.

What type of scales do Osteichthyes have?

The three categories of scales for Osteichthyes which are cosmoid scales, ganoid scales, teleost scales. The teleost scales are also then divided into two subgroups which are the cycloid scales, and the ctenoid scales.

What are three examples of Osteichthyes?

Osteichthyes Subclasses

Osteichthyes are divided into two subclasses: Sarcopterygii and Actinopterygii. Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fishes, include the lungfish and the coelacanth, and Actinopterygii, or ray-finned fishes, include salmon, herring, eels, anchovies, and clownfish, among many others.

Are Chondrichthyes vertebrates or invertebrates?

They can be contrasted with the Osteichthyes or bony fishes, which have skeletons primarily composed of bone tissue. Chondrichthyes are jawed vertebrates with paired fins, paired nares, scales, and a heart with its chambers in series.

What is Chondrichthyes biology?

chondrichthyan, (class Chondrichthyes), also called chondrichthian, any member of the diverse group of cartilaginous fishes that includes the sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras.

What is a cartilaginous skeleton?

Cartilaginous skeleton

This is a flexible but strong connective tissue that's also found throughout the human body, in places like the nose, ears, and in joints between bones. Sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras (also know as rat fishes) all have cartilaginous skeletons.

What are class actinopterygii organisms?

• Polypteriformes (Bichirs, Reedfishes)
• Acipenseriformes (Sturgeons, Paddlefish)
• Lepisosteiformes (Gars)
• Amiiformes (Bowfin)
• Osteoglossiformes (bony-tongued fishes)
• Hiodontiformes (mooneye, goldeneye …)
• Elopiformes (ladyfishes, tarpon … )
• Albuliformes (bonefishes)

What is the difference between actinopterygii and Sarcopterygii?

Sarcopterygii and actinopterygii are two groups of osteichthyans. The key difference between sarcopterygii and actinopterygii relies mainly on their fin structure. Sarcopterygii fish species have lobed fins, while the actinopterygii fish species have ray fins.
