In the given question, in a diesel engine the mixture that is fuel vapour and air, mainly consisting of air, is compressed by piston. Piston exerts high pressure and heat is produced. Basically diesel engine air is compressed to a sufficient high temperature to ignite diesel fuel injected to a cylinder.

What ignites the fuel in a diesel engine?

A diesel engine takes air, compresses it, and then injects fuel into the compressed air. The heat of the compressed air ignites the fuel spontaneously.

How is diesel engine ignited?

Injected fuel is ignited by its reaction to compressed hot air in the cylinder, a more efficient process than that of the spark-ignition internal-combustion engine. ... The diesel engine gains its energy by burning fuel injected or sprayed into the compressed, hot air charge within the cylinder.

How is diesel fuel ignited in a warm engine?

The diesel engine uses heat created by compression to ignite the fuel, so it requires no spark ignition system. The diesel engine requires compression ratios of 16:1 and higher. Incoming air is compressed until its temperature reaches about 1,000°F (540°C). This is called heat of com- pression.

How is diesel fuel ignited in a warm diesel engine quizlet?

How is diesel fuel ignited in a warm diesel engine? ... Technician A says that glow plugs are used to help start a diesel engine and are shut off as soon as the engine starts. Technician B says that the glow plugs are turned off as soon as a flame is detected in the combustion chamber.

The Differences Between Petrol and Diesel Engines

Which of the following is used to ignite diesel fuel in a warm diesel engine?

Fuel ignition

Diesel engines rely on this. A piston compresses the air in the cylinder (see figure 1), making it extremely hot. The diesel is then atomized in the injectors, and a mist is sprayed into the hot air. The hot air immediately ignites the fuel, providing ignition.

What phase of combustion creates the noise heard in a diesel engine?

Combustion noise is related to the maximum cylinder pressure gradient, Figure 9 [3337] . In diesel engines, this usually occurs during the premixed combustion phase. The duration of the high cylinder pressure gradient, which is directly governed by the duration of ignition delay, also has an influence.

How does fuel ignite in engine?

In a spark ignition engine, the fuel is mixed with air and then inducted into the cylinder during the intake process. After the piston compresses the fuel-air mixture, the spark ignites it, causing combustion. The expansion of the combustion gases pushes the piston during the power stroke.

Is diesel fuel flammable?

If you toss a lit match into a puddle of diesel fuel, it'll go out. That's because diesel is much less flammable than gasoline. ... On the other hand, if you toss a match into a pool of gasoline, it won't even touch the surface — it ignites the vapors above the surface.

How is diesel fuel warmed in a diesel engine?

Glow Plugs and Block Heaters: The use of glow plugs or block heaters will start the vast majority of diesel engines on a cold day. Glow plugs work by heating the internal combustion chamber so that conditions are suitable for compression and ultimately ignition.

Why does diesel ignite under pressure?

The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to the mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine).

Do diesels have spark plugs?

Spark plugs are used in the petrol engines to ignite the air fuel mixture whereas in diesel engines the presence of spark plugs is not necessary. ... At the end of compression the spark is ignited and then combustion takes place from where the power stroke is obtained.

Is diesel a fossil fuel?

Fossil fuels include coal, natural gas, and petroleum. Petroleum can be refined into other fuels, such as diesel and gasoline.

What is 4 stroke diesel engine?

The four stroke Diesel engine is an internal combustion (IC) engine in which the piston completes four separate strokes while turning a crankshaft. A stroke refers to the full travel of the piston along the cylinder, in either direction.

Is a diesel engine 2 or 4 stroke?

Diesel engines are 4-stroke, but they differ from their gasoline-powered counterparts in their method of combustion. Diesels rely on very high compression ratios to ignite the air/fuel mixture rather than a spark plug.

How explosive is diesel fuel?

Diesel vapors can ignite and explode when mixed with air. ... The lower explosive limit is less than 1%, and the upper explosive limit is about 10%. That means that diesel fuel vapors from a storage tank can explode with as little as 1% of the air being diesel fuel vapors.

What makes a diesel engine fire?

Diesel vehicles are similar to gasoline vehicles because they both use internal combustion engines. ... In a compression-ignited system, the diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber of the engine and ignited by the high temperatures achieved when the gas is compressed by the engine piston.

What is a stroke in an engine?

A phase of the engine's cycle (e.g. compression stroke, exhaust stroke), during which the piston travels from top to bottom or vice versa. ... The type of power cycle used by a piston engine (e.g. two-stroke engine, four-stroke engine).

What is drawn in to cylinder in diesel engine?

Explanation: In Diesel engines, during suction stroke, only air is drawn in the cylinder.

How is air compressed in a diesel engine?

When you turn on the engine, the battery powers the pistons in the cylinder up and down. The pistons push the air through the cylinders, into a combustion chamber where it is compressed. Compression forces the molecules in the air to move faster, which naturally heats the air.

What is combustion chamber in diesel engine?

A Combustion Chamber is the area within the Cylinder where the fuel/air mix is ignited. As the Piston compresses the fuel/air mix and makes contact with the Spark Plug, the mixture is combusted and pushed out of the Combustion Chamber in the form of energy.

What gives diesel engines their sound?

Diesel engines usually produce more sound due to the blowdown event, which is the moment when the exhaust valve opens. Because the internal pressure inside the cylinder chamber is usually higher in diesel than in petrol engines, the sound is consequently higher during blowdown.

Why do diesel engines make noise?

Diesel engines make a lot of noise while burning the fuel. The main reason behind this is that diesel molecules are much bigger than petrol molecules and the engines run on high compression. ... The heat which is generated during compression leads to self ignition of the fuel. Thus, clattering noises are produced.
