Measure with NMR the self-diffusion coefficient of a liquid in the porous layer. Compare with the self-diffusion coefficient in the pure layer and you have the tortuosity.

What is the unit of tortuosity?

Tortuosity is a ratio that characterizes the convoluted pathways of fluid diffusion and electrical conduction through porous media. In the fluid mechanics of porous media, tortuosity is the ratio of the length of a streamline—a flow line or path—between two points to the straight-line distance between those points.

What is meant by tortuosity?

Tortuosity is an intrinsic property of a porous material usually defined as the ratio of actual flow path length to the straight distance between the ends of the flow path (Bear, 1988).

What is geometric tortuosity?

Geometric tortuosity is the ratio between the shortest pathway in the medium to the distance between the inlet and outlet plane. ... For all synthetic samples, the more complex the pore structure, the greater the tortuosity.

What is porosity and tortuosity?

The porosity of an electrode is the fraction of the void (pore) volume in the total electrode volume. The tortuosity factor is a measure of the geometric complexity of a porous medium, and it is usually defined as the squared ratio between the curved paths followed by a fluid in the porous medium over a straight path.

6.2 Tortuosity and porosity

What is vessel tortuosity?

Arterial tortuosity syndrome (ATS) is an extremely rare genetic disorder characterized by lengthening (elongation) and twisting or distortion (tortuosity) of arteries throughout the body. Arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart.

How does tortuosity affect diffusion?

As noted earlier, in sediments, or in any porous system, the presence of solid particles causes the diffusion paths of species to deviate from straight lines (see Fig. 1). Consequently, the diffusion coefficients of species must be corrected for the tortuosity.

What is tortuous course?

full of twists, turns, or bends; twisting, winding, or crooked: a tortuous path. not direct or straightforward, as in procedure or speech; circuitous: tortuous negotiations lasting for months.

What does tortuous mean in medical terms?

Medical Definition of tortuous

: marked by repeated twists, bends, or turns a tortuous blood vessel.

Which is correct tortuous or torturous?

Tortuous means "marked by repeated bends, turns, or twists." It can also be used metaphorically to describe something deviously indirect or circuitous. Torturous, on the other hand, generally means "extremely unpleasant or painful," or metaphorically "painfully difficult."

What type of context clues is tortuous?

“Tortuous” means “winding and twisting.” Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. An opposite meaning context clue contrasts the meaning of an unfamiliar word with the meaning of a familiar term. Words like “although,” “however,” and “but” may signal contrast clues.

What are tortuous veins?

High pressure in veins (venous hypertension) caused by malfunctioning valves, gradually enlarges these thin-walled vessels. As they dilate, they elongate and become tortuous. Located close to the skin, varicose veins are visibly noted as bulges or lumps on the legs.

How do you calculate tortuosity factor?

Measure with NMR the self-diffusion coefficient of a liquid in the porous layer. Compare with the self-diffusion coefficient in the pure layer and you have the tortuosity.

How is tortuosity factor calculated?

This effect is captured in a term called the tortuosity factor, , which is defined in (1) D eff = D ε τ where is the volume fraction of the conductive phase; is the intrinsic diffusivity of the conductive phase; and is the effective diffusivity through a porous volume where the second phase is insulating.

What is tortuosity in well drilling?

Wellbore tortuosity in drilling applications is defined as any unwanted deviation from the planned well trajectory.

Is a mild tortuous aorta a problem?

While mild tortuosity is asymptomatic, severe tortuosity can lead to ischemic attack in distal organs. Clinical observations have linked tortuous arteries and veins with aging, atherosclerosis, hypertension, genetic defects and diabetes mellitus.

What is mild tortuosity of the thoracic aorta?

Abstract. Tortuosity of the thoracic aorta on chest radiographs is characteristic of atherosclerotic disease. Aging and hypertension are associated with the tortuosity, but little is known about the influence of other atherosclerotic risk factors on this abnormality.

Is tortuous aorta normal?

A tortuous aorta (meaning excessively twisted and turned) is often seen in older people. Although this is a sign of aging, it may not mean that it is causing or will cause any problems. However it can indicate an increased risk for other aortic diseases, such as aortic aneurysm.

How do veins get twisted?

Tiny valves in your veins open as blood flows toward your heart then close to stop blood from flowing backward. If these valves are weak or damaged, blood can flow backward and pool in the vein, causing the veins to stretch or twist.

What is right ICA?

Anatomical terminology. The internal carotid artery (Latin: arteria carotis interna) is located in the inner side of the neck in contrast to the external carotid artery.

How long can you live with a blocked carotid artery?

In other words, most patients who have carotid stenosis without symptoms will not have a stroke and this risk can be further reduced by surgery. To benefit from surgery, asymptomatic patients should have a narrowing of more than 70% and a life expectancy of at least 3-5 years.

What is moderate tortuosity?

They defined tortuosity as an S- or C-shaped elongation or undulation. Kinking was described as an acute angulation, its severity ranging from mild (angle ≥60°) to moderate (angle between 30° and 60°) and severe (angle <30°).

What does high tortuosity mean?

Tortuosity is a property of a curve being tortuous (twisted; having many turns). ... Tortuosity is commonly used to describe diffusion and fluid flow in porous media, such as soils and snow.

How do you soften hardened arteries?

1. Add more good fats to your diet. Good fats are also called unsaturated fats. ...
2. Cut sources of saturated fat, such as fatty meat and dairy. Choose lean cuts of meat, and try eating more plant-based meals.
3. Eliminate artificial sources of trans fats. ...
4. Increase your fiber intake. ...
5. Cut back on sugar.

Are veins distended or tortuous?

When the valves are weak or leaky, they can't completely close, allowing the back flow of blood down the leg where it “pools”in the lower leg. This is known as reflux. The pooling of the blood causes the veins to become distended and tortuous, leading to varicose veins.
