He said: "The classic way of doing magnetic levitation is using magnets. Take two magnets, or a magnet and a piece of superconductor, which will then have opposing magnetic fields." The repelling force lifts the magnetic object against gravity.

Can you levitate an object using magnetism?

Normal things, even humans, can levitate if they are placed in a strong magnetic field. ... Such materials can be levitated using magnetic fields of about 10 Tesla.

What materials are needed for magnetic levitation?

Maglev propulsion and levitation may involve the use of superconducting materials, electromagnets, diamagnets, and rare-earth magnets.

How does a magnetic levitation work?

In Maglev, superconducting magnets suspend a train car above a U-shaped concrete guideway. Like ordinary magnets, these magnets repel one another when matching poles face each other. ... These magnetic fields interact with simple metallic loops set into the concrete walls of the Maglev guideway.

Can you use electricity to levitate?

Electrostatic levitation is the process of using an electric field to levitate a charged object and counteract the effects of gravity. ... Due to Earnshaw's theorem, no static arrangement of classical electrostatic fields can be used to stably levitate a point charge.
