1. Desensitization. Direct massage over the irritated nerve is designed to both desensitize the nerve and break up any scar tissue around the nerve. ...
2. Medication. Medications like Gabapentin (Neurontin) or Pregabalin (Lyrica) may help to stabilize the irritated nerve.
3. Corticosteroid injection. ...
4. Comfort shoe wear.

How do you release sural nerves?

As the nerve is reasonably superficial and easy to access, sural nerve decompression can be accomplished under local anaesthesia, by a longitudinal section of the fascial tunnel, which releases the nerve from the surrounding fibrous tissue.

Can nerve entrapment be fixed?

Treatment may include injecting anesthetics, steroids, or anti-scarring materials at the entrapment points. In some cases, surgery can be performed on the affected area. In addition, avoiding the repetitive behaviors that cause the entrapment can help.

What causes sural nerve entrapment?

Entrapment of the nerve could be caused by compression due to fascial thickening, while the symptomatology includes sensory alterations and deficits at the nerve distribution area. We report a cadaveric case of a variant sural nerve that presented a distinct entrapment site.

What happens if the sural nerve is damaged?

Damage or compression of the sural nerve can result in burning pain and diminished sensation or loss of sensation (numbness). This nerve passes down from the back of the knee along the outside of the lower leg. It's located along the surface of the lower one-third of the leg.

Sural Neuritis

How long does it take for sural nerve to heal?

Among the three nerve-injury groups, sural nerve recovery was slowest, with the presence of painful neuromas in its innervation zone. However, sensation in the above cutaneous nerve injury region gradually recovered to normal by 6 months to 1 year after surgery.

How is sural neuralgia treated?

Sural neuralgia is a relatively rare condition and often responds to conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, massage therapy, antiinflammatory medications, tricyclic antidepressants, serotonin and norepinephrine inhibitors, gabapentin, and calcium channel blockers.

Where does sural nerve get entrapped?

Entrapment involving the sural nerve typically occurs at the musculotendinous junction of the gastrocnemius muscle and the Achilles tendon within the calf, as the nerve travels through a fibrous arcade (which has been termed the “superficial sural aponeurosis”) [8] (Fig. 71.9a), at the ankle (Fig.

What is sural neurectomy?

Sural neurectomy wilh implantation of the nerue stump. into lateral calcaneus.

What muscles are innervated by the sural nerve?

The sural nerve does not innervate any muscle groups as it only provides sensory innervation of the skin. It does, however, travel subcutaneously between the two heads of the gastrocnemius.

Can chiropractic help ulnar nerve entrapment?

Chiropractic treatment consisting of manipulation, soft tissue mobilizations, exercise, and education of workstation ergonomics appeared to reduce the symptoms of ulnar nerve compression symptoms for this patient.

What type of doctor treats nerve entrapment?

A neurologist is a specialist who treats diseases in the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system), peripheral nerves (nerves connecting the brain and spine to the organs, like the lungs or liver), and muscles.

Does nerve entrapment show on MRI?

Familiarity with the anatomy and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of nerve entrapment syndromes is important for accurate diagnosis and early treatment of entrapment neuropathies.

Is sural nerve part of sciatica?

The sural nerve is a terminal branch of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve provides motor function and sensation to the back of the thigh and the entire lower leg from the knee down. The sciatic nerve has two major branches: Tibial nerve.

What is sural neuropathy?

Sural neuropathy, also known as sural nerve entrapment, can be the result of nerve compression or traction injury of the sural nerve.

Can sciatica cause sural nerve pain?

Foot pain from compression of the nerve root or sciatica can also be linked to other symptoms such as pain, numbness and/or weakness in the flesh, thigh or leg. Foot pain that occurs after using tight boots or shoes can indicate compression of the peroneal or sural nerve close to the knee.

What is the function of the sural nerve?

Function. The sural nerve is purely sensory and it supplies sensation to the lower lateral leg, lateral heel, ankle and dorsal lateral foot.

What does saphenous nerve pain feel like?

Saphenous Nerve entrapment is described as pain on the inside of the thigh, knee, or calf. The pain is described as dull and achy pain and it may have a burning or electric type feel. Pressure on the inside of the knees will aggravate sensations such as having something resting on the persons lap.

What does tibial nerve pain feel like?

Symptoms may include any of the following: Sensation changes in the bottom of the foot and toes, including burning sensation, numbness, tingling, or other abnormal sensation. Pain in the bottom of the foot and toes. Weakness of foot muscles.

What is sural sensory?

Introduction. The sural is a sensory nerve, distally and superficially placed in the foot making it most accessible for nerve conduction studies. It has a low risk for compressive injury[1] and being distal reflects the status of the peripheral nerve in length-dependent peripheral neuropathies.

What nerve controls outside of foot?

The common peroneal nerve branches from the sciatic nerve and provides sensation to the front and sides of the legs and to the top of the feet. This nerve also controls the muscles in the leg that lift the ankle and toes upward.

What happens if you let a pinched nerve go untreated?

If left untreated, it may lead to permanent nerve damage. The most common symptoms of a pinched nerve include neck pain that travels down the arms and shoulders, difficulty lifting things, headache, and muscle weakness and numbness or tingling in fingers or hands.

How do you decompress a foot nerve?

Orthoses, arch supports, and some ankle splints may help position the foot to relieve pressure on the nerves. You may need to alter your work or sports activities. Support stockings or ankle elastic brace will control swelling and this often helps to provide relief.

Does massage help nerve regeneration?

Relaxation of muscles and an increase in blood flow both help to relieve symptoms of poor sensation and increase healing of damaged nerve fibres further improving sensation. A Swedish massage can help improve sensation.

What doctor treats anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome?

But since many internists are not familiar with this type of treatment, known as trigger-point injections, Dr. Grover recommends referring patients to either a gastroenterologist or pain specialist if CAWP is suspected.
