How thermometer was invented?
Andrew Mitchell The more modern thermometer was invented in 1709 by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit - Wikipedia
How did Galileo invent the thermometer?
In 1593, Galileo Galilei invented a rudimentary water thermoscope, which for the first time allowed temperature variations to be measured. ... It was perhaps the first crude clinical thermometer, as it was designed to be placed in a patient's mouth for temperature taking.
Who really invented the thermometer?
1612: Santorio Santorio – the first thermometer
The Italian, Santorio Santorio (1561-1636) is generally credited with having applied a scale to an air thermoscope at least as early as 1612 and thus is thought to be the inventor of the thermometer as a temperature measuring device.
How was the mercury thermometer invented?
In 1724, a German instrument maker called Gabriel Fahrenheit settled on mercury as the most suitable liquid for measuring temperature. He calibrated his first thermometer using a mixture of ice and water with sea salt as his zero.
Why and when was a thermometer invented?
In 1714, Dutch scientist and inventor Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first reliable thermometer, using mercury instead of alcohol and water mixtures. In 1724, he proposed a temperature scale which now (slightly adjusted) bears his name.

15 related questions foundWhat is the history of the thermometer?
The more modern thermometer was invented in 1709 by Daniel Fahrenheit. It was an enclosed glass tube that had a numerical scale, called the Fahrenheit scale. The early version of this thermometer contained alcohol and in 1714 Fahrenheit developed a mercury thermometer using the same scale.
Who invented the first digital thermometer?
The digital thermometer had a patent taken out for it in 1973 by F. Mueller, B. Martin, J. Chandler, R.
Why was mercury used in thermometers?
Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.
Do thermometers still have mercury?
The oldest thermometers used are mercury in glass. Newer thermometers include non-mercury liquids in glass and digital and electronic devices that use sensors to measure temperature. Thermometers that check body temperature in the ear, across the forehead, or have a digital display do not contain mercury.
What came first Fahrenheit or Celsius?
He originally had the scale in the opposite order of the scale used today — 0°C was the boiling point of water, and 100°C was the freezing point — but other scientists later reversed the scale. The Fahrenheit scale was first proposed in 1724 by the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit.
Which came first Kelvin or Celsius?
In 1742, Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius invented the Celsius scale, which measures temperature in degrees Celsius (°C). It has 0°C as the freezing point of water and 100°C as its boiling point. In 1848, Scottish physicist and engineer Lord Kelvin invented the Kelvin scale.
What inventions came from the scientific revolution?
What was invented during the Scientific Revolution?- Concave Lens (1451) It was used to magnify images.
- Heliocentric (1514) The sun was the center of the universe was Nicolaus Copernicus' idea.
- Supernovas and comets (1572-1577)
- Compound Microscope (1590)
- Magnetism (1600)
- Telescope (1600-1610)
What type of thermometer is used by Doctor?
The thermometer used by doctors and nurses to measure the temperature of human body is clinical thermometer ( medical thermometer) ranging from 35-42 degree Celsius.
When was the meat thermometer invented?
Today's Food History
1836 Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt was born. An English physician, he invented the short (6 inch) clinical thermometer. Before this a foot long meat thermometer was used that took 20 minutes to determine a patient's temperature.
Why alcohol is used in thermometer?
Alcohol thermometers are used rather than mercury thermometers in very cold regions because alcohol has a lower freezing point than mercury. ... If it freezes it won't move in the tube, so a liquid must be used that has a freezing point that's lower than the temperature it's measuring.
Why is water not used in thermometer?
Water is not able to be used as a thermometer liquid because of its higher freezing point and lower boiling point than the other liquids in general. ... This range is very negligible as compared to other liquids like mercury which has a freezing point of about −39∘C and boiling point 356∘C.
Why is alcohol thermometer better than mercury?
Unlike mercury in the mercury thermometer, alcohol is less toxic and evaporates quickly. But the maximum temperature measured by an alcohol thermometer is 78.5°C; hence this thermometer is suitable for measuring lower temperatures.
What is the history of digital thermometer?
Although a flight surgeon, Theodore Hannes Benzinger, invented the first ear thermometer during World War II, it was Dr. Jacob Fraden at Advanced Monitors Corporation, its CEO, who created in 1984 what is now the most widely used of ear thermometers, but that required digital thermometer technology.
Where was the first medical thermometer invented?
The earliest is Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1610–1670), who created an enclosed thermometer that used alcohol circa 1654. Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686–1736), a Polish-born Dutch physicist, engineer, and glass blower, made contributions to thermometers as well.
What is the red liquid in a thermometer?
Mercury is a silver-white to gray substance. If your thermometer is filled with a red liquid, your thermometer contains red dyed alcohol or mineral spirits and not mercury.
What are the two types of thermometer?
Types of thermometer- Digital thermometers. Digital thermometers are quick to use, reasonably accurate and can be used under the armpit (always use the thermometer under the armpit with children under 5). ...
- Ear (or tympanic) thermometers. ...
- Infared thermometers. ...

Who invented thermometer scientific revolution?
In the early 17th century, during the the Scientific Revolution, when the frontiers of discovery were marked by new ways to quantify natural phenomena, Galileo Galilei was forging new, innovative and empirically based methods in astronomy, physics and engineering.
Who invented maximum minimum thermometer?
Maximum and minimum thermometer invented by James Six and built by Antonio Matteucci for the Museo di Fisica e Storia Naturale. Mounted on a semicylindrical wooden column with a profiled top and bottom, it is composed of a central vessel filled with alcohol, connected to a U-tube.
