Tiles used in tessellations can be used for measuring distances. Once students know what the length is of the sides of the different tiles, they could use the information to measure distances. The tiles could be used to talk about perimeter.

How can tessellations be used in real life?

Tessellations can be found in many areas of life. Art, architecture, hobbies, and many other areas hold examples of tessellations found in our everyday surroundings. Specific examples include oriental carpets, quilts, origami, Islamic architecture, and the are of M. C. ... Oriental carpets hold tessellations indirectly.

What is the importance of tessellation in construction?

Tessellations in Architecture

Tessellations are used extensively in architecture, both two-dimensional and three-dimensional. Tessellations are easy to use in architecture, especially in two-dimensional, because even the simplest repeating pattern can look astonishing when it covers a large area.

In what ways have tessellations help to shape the world of arts?

Because of their characteristics and decorative aesthetics, tessellations were used in art and architecture alike, providing coverings for walls, pavements and ceilings of many facilities.

How is tessellation used in architecture?

Tessellation, or, Tilling, has been widely used in the field of architectural geometry design, which mostly deals with topological and fractals. A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes (tiles), with no overlaps and no gaps1.

TESSELLATIONS: REAL LIFE EXAMPLES

Why do we need tessellations?

Such tilings may be decorative patterns, or may have functions such as providing durable and water-resistant pavement, floor or wall coverings. Historically, tessellations were used in Ancient Rome and in Islamic art such as in the Moroccan architecture and decorative geometric tiling of the Alhambra palace.

What is tessellation in art?

It has a pretty simple meaning: A pattern made with polygons (a shape with three or more sides) that completely fills a space with no gaps, spaces or overlaps. Tessellations are all around us, like in floor tile and artwork. ... Many of the decorative tiles there were used to make repeating patterns.

What are tessellations used for in math?

Tessellation is a fancy word for fitting shapes together so that there are no gaps between the shapes and none of the shapes overlap – as if you're solving a jigsaw puzzle, tiling a wall or paving a path. ... Tessellation has one important rule: wherever lines meet, the angles have to add up to 360 degrees.

How does tessellation work?

A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Another word for a tessellation is a tiling.

What are some example of tessellations in design and architecture?

There are three regular shapes that make up regular tessellations: the equilateral triangle, the square and the regular hexagon. For example, a regular hexagon is used in the pattern of a honeycomb, the nesting structure of the honeybee.

What is tessellation making?

Tessellation is when you put shapes together to create a pattern without gaps between the shapes. For example, squares can be tessellated, because when you place them next to each other, there are no gaps between them.

Why is 360 degree important tessellation?

The fact that the angles add up to 180 degrees or 360 degrees is one of the reasons that triangles and quadrilaterals can tile: In any tessellation, the sum of the angles around every vertex must add to a full turn (360 degrees), which can be done by using each of the angles in a triangle twice or by using all four ...

What are tessellations in nature?

Surface tessellations are an arrangement of shapes which are tightly fitted, and form repeat patterns on a surface without overlapping. Imagine the pattern of a giraffe's fur, the shell of a tortoise and the honeycomb of bees—all form natural tessellations.

What are the 3 types of tessellations?

There are three types of regular tessellations: triangles, squares and hexagons.

Is fish scale a tessellation?

Fish Scales Though they are not a regular geometric shape, fish scales are also an example of a naturally occurring tessellation. The repeated patterns occur in many different types of fish with many different sizes and shapes of scales.

What is tessellation and how does it work?

A tessellation is a pattern created with identical shapes which fit together with no gaps. Regular polygons tessellate if the interior angles can be added together to make 360°. Certain shapes that are not regular can also be tessellated.

What are the properties of tessellations?

• RULE #1: The tessellation must tile a floor (that goes on forever) with no overlapping or gaps.
• RULE #2: The tiles must be regular polygons - and all the same.
• RULE #3: Each vertex must look the same.

What shapes can tessellate?

Only three regular polygons (shapes with all sides and angles equal) can form a tessellation by themselves—triangles, squares, and hexagons. What about circles? Circles are a type of oval—a convex, curved shape with no corners.

What is a reflection tessellation?

When you cut a shape out of paper, then flip it over, the flipped shape looks like a mirror image of the original shape. So a tessellation made with this technique is called a reflection tessellation. Your hands can help you understand the concept of mirror reflection.

Are tessellations patterns?

What Is A Tessellation? Tessellation forms a pattern by repeatedly arranging tiles or shapes without gaps or overlays between the shapes – think mosaic pattern tiles and how jigsaw puzzles interlock. A tile refers to the repeating tessellation shape.

Do all quadrilaterals tessellate?

All quadrilaterals tessellate. Begin with an arbitrary quadrilateral ABCD. Rotate by 180° about the midpoint of one of its sides, and then repeat using the midpoints of other sides to build up a tessellation. The angles around each vertex are exactly the four angles of the original quadrilateral.

What is a semi tessellation?

A semi-regular tessellation is one consisting of regular polygons of the same length of side, with the same 'behaviour' at each vertex. ... An example of a semi-regular tessellation is that with triangle–triangle–square–triangle–square in cyclic order, at each vertex.

How do you make a simple tessellation?

1. Draw a shape on the paper. On the square piece of paper draw a simple shape from one corner to the other.
2. Cut One side. Carefully cut out one side, then slide it all the way to the other side.
3. Cut out other shape. ...
4. Trace Template. ...
5. Fill entire page with this process. ...
6. Color your design. ...
7. Trace with black marker.
