Sulfide mineral deposits originate in two principal processes, both of which have reducing conditions: (1) separation of an immiscible sulfide melt during the early stages of crystallization of basic magmas; and (2) deposition from aqueous brine solutions at temperatures in the 300–600° C (572–1,112° F) range and at ...

What is sulfide made of?

Sulfide is an inorganic anion of sulfur with the chemical formula S2⁻ or a compound containing one or more S2⁻ ions.

Is sulfide a rock forming mineral?

The most common rock-forming minerals are silicates (see Vol. IVA: Mineral Classes: Silicates), but they also include oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, sulfates, carbonates, phosphates, and halides (see Vol.

Which are the two common sulfide minerals?

• Pyrite.
• Stibnite.
• Realgar.

Which of the following is an example of a sulfide mineral?

Some examples of sulfides include galena ( the principle ore mineral for lead and silver), cinnabar (the main ore mineral for mercury), and chalcopyrite (which provides copper).

22) Sulfide Minerals

Where is Argentite found?

It occurs in mineral veins, and when found in large masses, as in Mexico and in the Comstock Lode in Nevada, it forms an important ore of silver.

What is sulphide used for?

Sodium sulfide (Na₂S) is an important industrial chemical, used in manufacture of kraft paper, dyes, leather tanning, crude petroleum processing, treatment of heavy metal pollution, and others.

How is Covellite formed?

Covellite is known to form in weathering environments in surficial deposits where copper is the primary sulfide. As a primary mineral, the formation of covellite is restricted to hydrothermal conditions, thus rarely found as such in copper ore deposits or as a volcanic sublimate.

Where is Pentlandite found?

Pentlandite is found within the lower margins of mineralised layered intrusions, the best examples being the Bushveld igneous complex, South Africa, the Voiseys Bay troctolite intrusive complex in Canada, the Duluth gabbro, in North America, and various other localities throughout the world.

How many sulfide minerals are there?

Several hundred sulfide minerals are known, but only five are sufficiently abundant accessory minerals to have been categorized as 'rock forming' (Bowles et al. 2011). These five are pyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, and it is the iron sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite) which are dominant.

What's the difference between sulfate and sulfide minerals?

Sulfide (British English also sulphide) is an inorganic anion of sulfur with the chemical formula S2− or a compound containing one or more S2− ions. ... The sulfate or sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula SO2−4. Salts, acid derivatives, and peroxides of sulfate are widely used in industry.

Is sulfide a metamorphic rock?

Silicate, phosphate, and sulfide minerals occur in all types of rock—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic—and weathering products.

Where is sulfide found?

Sulfides occur in all rock types. Except for dissemination in certain sedimentary rocks, these minerals tend to occur in isolated concentrations which make up mineral bodies such as veins and fracture fillings or which comprise replacements of preexisting rocks in the shape of blankets.

Is Sulphur and sulphide same?

Sulphur is a chemical compound with the symbol S and has the atomic number 16. Sulphide is an inorganic anion of sulphur. It has the chemical formula S^2-. Sulphur is sometimes found in the pure form but mostly occurs as sulphide or minerals of sulfate.

Is sulfide a gas?

Hydrogen sulfide (also known as H2S, sewer gas, swamp gas, stink damp, and sour damp) is a colorless gas known for its pungent "rotten egg" odor at low concentrations. It is extremely flammable and highly toxic. Hydrogen sulfide also occurs naturally in sewers, manure pits, well water, oil and gas wells, and volcanoes.

How is Cobaltite formed?

It occurs in high-temperature hydrothermal deposits and contact metamorphic rocks. It occurs in association with magnetite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, skutterudite, allanite, zoisite, scapolite, titanite, and calcite along with numerous other Co–Ni sulfides and arsenides. It was described as early as 1832.

What is Pentlandite made of?

Pentlandite is an iron nickel sulfide with chemical formula of [(Fe,Ni)₉S₈]. The mineral was discovered by and named after the Irish scientist Joseph Barclay Pentland. The color is yellow-bronze with light bronze-brown streak and metallic luster.

Which metal is from Pentlandite?

Pentlandite, a nickel and iron sulfide mineral, the chief source of nickel. It is nearly always found with pyrrhotite and similar minerals in silica-poor rocks such as those at Bushveld, S.Af.; Bodø, Nor.; and Sudbury, Ont., Can. It has also been found in meteorites.

Where is Covellite found?

Named after Niccolo Covelli who discovered the mineral at its type locality at Mt. Vesuvius in the Naples province of Campania, Italy. Covellite has thousands of localities worldwide, however rich material comes from localities in Italy, Austria, Germany, Russia, Morocco, the United States, and Argentina.

Where is Enargite found?

It occurs in the mineral deposits at Butte, Montana, San Juan Mountains, Colorado and at both Bingham Canyon and Tintic, Utah. It is also found in the copper mines of Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and the Philippines.

Is gold a sulfide?

Except where otherwise noted, data are given for materials in their standard state (at 25 °C [77 °F], 100 kPa). Gold(I) sulfide is the inorganic compound with the formula Au₂S. It is the principal sulfide of gold. It decomposes to gold metal and elemental sulfur, illustrating the "nobility" of gold.

Is sulphide acidic or basic?

Acid Equilibria

Sulfide is a strong base, so solutions of sulfide in water are basic, due to hydrolysis.

Which ore contains sulphide?

Complex sulfide ores are fine-grained, intimate associations of chalcopyrite (CuFeS₂), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS), disseminated in dominant pyrite, and containing valuable amounts of minor elements.
