Silage is made by packing the chopped crop into a "pit" and packing it down well so that any oxygen pockets are eliminated. Oxygen pockets encourage spoilage of the feed. Silage and haylage can be interchangeable, especially since haylage or baleage involves the same process of ensiling to preserve feed for livestock.

What is silage and how it is produced?

Silage is the term used for the product formed when any green plant material is put in a place where it can ferment in the absence of air. ... During ensiling, fermentation of sugars forms acids and breaks down some of the forage proteins into simpler compounds, including ammonia.

How do you prepare silage for cattle?

Make sure you cover the walls so that the forage does not come into contact with the soil. Cut the fresh forage in small pieces say for about 1 to 1.5 inches in length using either a panga or a chaff cutter. Add little salt, urea, molasses in it to improve the quality of the mixture.

How long can silage last?

In general, forages baled at 40-60% moisture will maintain feed value for about 12 months as long as the integrity of the plastic is maintained. However, even where the forage was baled at the appropriate moisture level and the plastic has minimal holes, it is good practice to feed baleage bales within 9 months.

Which crop is best for silage making?

The fodder crops, such as maize, sorghum, oats, pearl millet, and hybrid napier rich in soluble carbohydrates are most suitable for fodder ensiling. Quality of silage can be improved with the use of suitable additives such as molasses, urea, salt, formic acid etc.

Is silage better than green fodder?

Green fodder can be kept preserved in succulent stage for any length of time. 3. Grass silage preserves 85 % or more of the feed value of the crop, whereas hay making will preserve much less percentage of nutrients.

What is the pH of silage?

SILAGE of good quality has a pH of 4.2 or less, with the possible exception of silage made from wilted materials. If grass with a high protein content is ensiled, acids or carbohydrates may have to be added to obtain such a low pH.

Why is silage made?

Both silage and hay are popular ways for farmers to feed their livestock when they're unable to graze during the winter. They're both comprised of grass and considered a preservation method of forage. ... Silage is fermented and stored in a silo before used as food.

What is silage process?

Silage making involves four major steps viz., harvesting and transportation, chaffing, filling and compaction and covering of silo. 1. Pit making: Firstly, a silage pit has to be dug for storing silage.

Who invented silage?

It is known that the Greeks and Egyptians were familiar with ensiling as a technique for storing fodder as far back as 1000 to 1500 BC. In parts of Northern Europe grass was being ensiled in the early 18th century but it was not until the latter part of the 19th century that it became more widespread.

What is the colour of good silage?

Characteristics of Good Silage

The golden brown or greenish yellow colour and the pleasant fruity odour will speak more than the chemical parameters regarding the quality of silage. In addition to that, No mould growth. Pleasant fruity odour/ an acceptable aroma.

How do you make silage step by step?

The 10 steps to making quality silage are: • harvest the forage when excess to feed requirements and high in quality • wilt the forage to 30% DM • add a fermentable substrate at ensiling • chop the forage into short lengths (1–3 cm) before ensiling • compact the forage as tightly as possible • complete the entire ...

How can you make silage better quality?

1. Decide on silage quality needed: ...
2. Cut at the right growth stage: ...
3. Do not sacrifice quality for bulk: ...
4. Do not wait 'for Nitrogen to leave the crop': ...
5. If in doubt, test sugars: ...
6. Wilt for a day: ...
7. Choose additives based on need: ...
8. Reduce post-harvest losses:

What are the disadvantages of silage?

• It requires a silo (a permanent structure) in comparison with the simpler methods of field curing and storing hay, this is likely to mean higher costs for small farmers.
• Wastage my be more, if silage is not properly made.
• Poorly prepared silages are not accepted by animals.

Can cows eat silage?

Corn silage is a feed that we don't typically feed to beef cows. Corn silage is usually used in growing calf and feedlot diets because of its high nutritive value, especially energy. When hays and alfalfas are expensive, corn silage is a feed that cow/calf producers should consider.

How good is silage?

Silage has several advantages over hay as a mechanically harvested product. Silage has more nutrients preserved per acre because there is less field loss. Silage is also less affected by weather damage because the forage does not lie in the field drying.

What crops can be used to make silage?

• Silage (/ˈsaɪlɪdʒ/) is a type of fodder made from green foliage crops which have been preserved by fermentation to the point of acidification. ...
• The crops most often used for ensilage are the ordinary grasses, clovers, alfalfa, vetches, oats, rye and maize.

What happens if silage is watery?

Moisture is critical when harvesting silage. Remember that if the silage is too wet there is a risk of butyric acid forming and nutrients being lost due to seepage. Silage that is over 70% moisture should not be harvested and should stand in the field for a few more days.

What should silage smell like?

The good silage

Silage that ferments normally may smell slightly sweet, but typically has very little odor since the most prevalent volatile fatty acid is lactate, which is nearly odorless.

What are the different types of silage?

Three different moisture levels can be achieved: high-moisture silage (≤ 30% DM), medium-moisture silage (30% to 40% DM), and low-moisture (wilted) silage (40% to 60% DM). Low-moisture silage is referred to as haylage. When baled and wrapped, haylage is referred to as baleage.

How do you get rid of silage smell?

If your silage does smell and your cows don't want to eat it, the only solution is dilution. Remove all obvious rot and mould, and then try to incorporate any bad smelling silage with a large amount of good smelling silage. Some farmers have found the addition of powdered molasses can help.
