Why a meniscus occurs Water molecules are attracted to the molecules in the wall of the glass beaker. And since water molecules like to stick together, when the molecules touching the glass cling to it, other water molecules cling to the molecules touching the glass, forming the meniscus.

What is a meniscus and when is it formed?

A meniscus is a curve formed on the upper surface of a liquid inside a container. This curve is formed by the surface tension between the liquid and the container holding the liquid.

What is meniscus short answer?

The quick answer is the meniscus is a C-shaped piece of soft and fibrous cartilage, also known as fibrocartilage, that provides shock absorption and cushion to your knee. ... It is also wedge-shaped which improves joint congruency, further adding to knee stability.

How does a concave meniscus form?

A concave meniscus, which is what you normally will see, occurs when the molecules of the liquid are attracted to those of the container. This occurs with water and a glass tube. A convex meniscus occurs when the molecules have a stronger attraction to each other than to the container, as with mercury and glass.

Why is the meniscus important?

The meniscus plays a vital role in maintaining the stability of the knee joint along with optimizing the tibiofemoral load transfer and distribution. This also helps in preserving the health of the articular cartilage.

Do all liquids have a meniscus?

Most liquids, including water, show a concave meniscus but a great example of a convex meniscus is liquid mercury in a glass container.

How do you preserve the meniscus?

1. Stay flexible. Flexibility training, whether it's in the form of yoga, tai chi, or a set of exercises prescribed by Dr. ...
2. Strengthen your muscles. ...
3. Do a warm-up first. ...
4. Be sure to rest. ...
5. Wear properly fitting shoes. ...
6. Take it slow.

Why does water form a meniscus?

Why a meniscus occurs

Adhesion is responsible for a meniscus and this has to do in part with water's fairly high surface tension. ... And since water molecules like to stick together, when the molecules touching the glass cling to it, other water molecules cling to the molecules touching the glass, forming the meniscus.

What liquids form convex meniscus?

When liquid mercury is confined in a tube, its surface (meniscus) has a convex shape because the cohesive forces in liquid mercury tend to draw it into a drop.

Why do we read lower meniscus?

The lower meniscus must be read while measuring the volume of colourless or transparent liquids but the upper meniscus while using colured ones because the phase boundary in the colourless liquid is clearly visible so it is easy to read it.

What is meniscus made of?

The meniscus cartilage itself is made up of a softer fibrocartilage. The knee has two C-shaped meniscus structures made of a softer fibrocartilage. These structures are anchored to the tibia by the peripheral capsular attachments of the menisci, which allow them more mobility within the joint.”

Where is a meniscus located?

The menisci — the medial meniscus and lateral meniscus - are crescent-shaped bands of thick, rubbery cartilage attached to the shinbone (tibia). They act as shock absorbers and stabilize the knee. The medial meniscus is on the inner side of the knee joint. The lateral meniscus is on the outside of the knee.

Where is your meniscus?

The menisci sit between the tibia (lower leg bone) and the femur (thigh bone) and protect the lower part of the leg from the shock created by our body weight. The medial meniscus sits on the inside of the knee and the lateral meniscus sits on the outside of the knee.

What is an example of meniscus?

The definition of a meniscus is the fibrous cartilage in a knee joint, or the curved upper surface of liquid that touches the sides of a jar, or a lens that is convex on one side and concave on the other. ... When oil is in a jar and the oil has a curve on the top of its surface, this is an example of meniscus.

What are the types of meniscus?

Each knee has two menisci: The lateral meniscus is in your outer knee, and the medial meniscus is in the inner knee. A torn meniscus is a primary reason for knee pain, because the injured cartilage is no longer providing the full cushiony protection between the bones in the knee joint.

What is meniscus and its types?

The meniscus (plural: menisci, from the Greek for "crescent") is the curve in the upper surface of a liquid close to the surface of the container or another object, caused by surface tension. It can be either concave or convex, depending on the liquid and the surface.

Is there any liquid that will not form a meniscus?

For example, water forms a meniscus in a glass tube and mercury does not. In short mercury does not form a meniscus, it forms like an anti meniscus which is pretty cool.

Is adhesion stronger than cohesion?

Since water forms a concave up meniscus, the adhesion of the molecules to the glass is stronger than the cohesion among the molecules. However, in the absence of the adhesive force (when water reaches the tip of the glass), the cohesive force remains present.

Does alcohol form convex meniscus?

For ethanol, the meniscus remains concave in shape for the entire range of applied Capillary numbers. In contrast, for the case of silicon oil, a drastic change of contact angle occurs with respect to the applied Capillary number; the shape of the interface changes from concave (at low Ca) to convex (at high Ca).

What is the opposite of meniscus?

A meniscus occurs because of surface tension in the liquid and must be read at eye level. For a concave meniscus, the correct volume will be read at the bottom of the curve. For a convex meniscus, the opposite is true and the correct reading will be at the top of the curve.

What is the skin of water called?

Meniscus (liquid) - Wikipedia.

What is a meniscus in physics?

Meniscus in Physics

In physics, the term "meniscus" can either apply to the boundary between a liquid and its container or to a type of lens used in optics. A meniscus lens is a convex-concave lens in which one face curves outward, while the other face curves inward.

How do you strengthen your meniscus?

1. Meniscus Tears.
2. Quad Sets.
3. Straight-Leg Raise to the Front.
4. Straight-Leg Raise to the Back.
5. Hamstring Curls.
6. Heel Raises.
7. Heel Dig Bridging.
8. Shallow Standing Knee Bends.

What muscles protect the meniscus?

One key to preventing a meniscus tear is to strengthen the muscles that support the knee.
...
To help prevent meniscus tears, you should routinely perform exercises that target these muscles:

• Quadriceps (front of the thigh)
• Hamstrings (back of the thigh)
• Abductors (outer thigh)
• Adductors (inner thigh)

Can I walk on a torn meniscus?

A torn meniscus usually produces well-localized pain in the knee. The pain often is worse during twisting or squatting motions. Unless the torn meniscus has locked the knee, many people with a torn meniscus can walk, stand, sit, and sleep without pain.
