There are two types of cellular cofferdams, diaphragm and circular. Diaphragm types are cofferdams with circular arcs at the sides, connected to straight diaphragm walls. Circular types are large circle-shaped cells, connected to one another by slightly smaller circular cells.

Which is the most common type of cofferdam?

• Braced Cofferdams.
• Cellular Cofferdams.
• Aqua-Barrier Inflatable Cofferdam.

What are cofferdams?

Cofferdam, watertight enclosure from which water is pumped to expose the bed of a body of water in order to permit the construction of a pier or other hydraulic work. Cofferdams are made by driving sheetpiling, usually steel in modern works, into the bed to form a watertight fence.

How are cofferdams selected?

The factors that govern the choice of a cofferdam for a certain construction site are the water table of that area, type of soil, size and depth of excavation, construction material availability, ease of transportation, water flow velocity, and risk of damage by floating debris.

What is coffer dam and its type?

Definition  Cofferdams are temporary enclosures to keep out water and soil so as to permit dewatering and construction of the permanent facility (structure) in the dry.  A Coffer Dam is a temporary structure designed to keep water and /or soil out of the excavation in which a bridge pier or other structure is built.

What are Cofferdams and How are They Used?

What is sheet pile cofferdams?

The purpose of a cofferdam is to exclude water and/or soil from an area required for construction work, to a depth below the surface. ... Cofferdam walls are formed from sheet piles acting in cantilever or supported by walers, internal braces and external anchors.

How deep can cofferdams be?

Single-walled

This type of cofferdam is most suitable when the area to be enclosed is particularly small and the water is of a deeper level, roughly 4-6 m.

What are the types of bridge foundation?

• Spread or open foundation.
• Raft foundation.
• Grillage foundation.
• Inverted arch foundation.
• Pile foundation.
• Well foundation.
• Caisson foundation.

Where are cofferdams used?

Cofferdams are commonly used for construction or repair of permanent dams, oil platforms, bridge piers, etc., built within or over water. These cofferdams are usually welded steel structures, with components consisting of sheet piles, wales, and cross braces.

What are caissons and cofferdams?

Caissons are permanent structures found in the initial design construction, whereas cofferdams are temporary structures installed for necessary repairs or maintenance.

What is the difference between cofferdams and bulkhead?

is that bulkhead is (nautical) a vertical partition dividing the hull into separate compartments; often made watertight to prevent excessive flooding if the ship's hull is breached while cofferdam is a temporary watertight structure that is pumped dry to enclose an area underwater and allow construction work on a ship, ...

How are cofferdams used during foundation construction?

A cofferdam is a temporary structure designed to keep water and/or soil out of the excavation in which a bridge pier or other structure is built. When construction must take place below the water level, a cofferdam is built to give workers a dry work environment.

Who invented cofferdams?

The first cofferdams were said to be used by King Cyrus of Persia in 539 B.C. to temporarily divert water from the Euphrates river, allowing the capture of Babylon. This capture of Babylon ended their rule, allowing the Medo-Persian empire to begin.

Which of the following cofferdams are more water tight?

Explanation: Single wall cofferdams is suitable up to a maximum depth of water of 25 m. In this type of cofferdam, a single row of Piles is used on either side of the cofferdam.

What is meant by gravity dam?

A gravity dam is a dam constructed from concrete or stone masonry and designed to hold back water by using only the weight of the material and its resistance against the foundation to oppose the horizontal pressure of water pushing against it.

What is single-walled cofferdam?

A single-walled cofferdam is used where the area to be enclosed is very small. ... This type of cofferdam is used for depth of water up to 6 m. Single-Walled Cofferdam. First of all soft materials are removed from the bed of the river.

How are cofferdams made?

Constructing a cellular cofferdam is done by driving sheet piles in a circular pattern, and then repeating this process adjacent to the original to form a series of circular cells. Each of these cells connects to one another and forms a tight seal that prevents water from entering.

How many types of bridges are there?

There are six basic bridge forms: the beam, the truss, the arch, the suspension, the cantilever, and the cable-stay. Six basic bridge forms.

How many foundations are there?

In general, all foundations are divided into two categories, - shallow and deep foundations. The terms Shallow and Deep Foundation refer to the depth of the soil at which it is placed. Generally, if the width of the foundation is greater than the depth, it is labeled as the “Shallow Foundation”.

What is culvert and its types?

Culvert is defined as a tunnel structure constructed under roadways or railways to provide cross drainage or to take electrical or other cables from one side to other. It is totally enclosed by soil or ground. Pipe culvert, box culvert and arch culvert are the common types used under roadways and railways.

What is caisson foundation?

A caisson foundation also called as pier foundation is a watertight retaining structure used as a bridge pier, in the construction of a concrete dam, or for the repair of ships. ... Caissons (also sometimes called “piers”) are created by auguring a deep hole into the ground, and then filling it with concrete.

How do you build a coffer dam?

When construction must take place below the water level, a cofferdam is built to give workers a dry work environment. Sheet piling is driven around the work site, seal concrete is placed into the bottom to prevent water from seeping in from underneath the sheet piling, and the water is pumped out.

What are the different types of sheet piles?

• Wooden sheet piles.
• Precast concrete Sheet piles.
• Prestressed concrete sheet piles.
• Steel sheet piles.

What is Secant piles?

A Secant Piled Wall is a retaining wall constructed for ground retention prior to excavation. The wall is formed by constructing alternating primary (female) and secondary (male) piles where the secondary piles partially cut into either side of the primary piles in order to form a continuous impervious structure.

What is sheeting construction?

Sheeting and shoring are typically used at construction sites in order to provide temporary support of soil and existing structures. ... Sheeting consists of complete systems of shoring driven or vibrated into the soil with no lagging required.
