How many epiphysis of long bones have?
Daniel Lopez Section the bone of one of the arm: Long bone consist of a shaft (= Diaphysis - Wikipedia
How many types of epiphysis are there?
There are two types of epiphyses: (1) pressure epiphyses, which are found at the ends of long bones, and (2) traction epiphyses (apophyses), which are sites of origin or insertion of major muscles (e.g., the greater trochanter of the femur). The metaphysis is an area between the diaphysis and epiphysis.
What is the epiphyses of a long bone?
The epiphyses, which are wider sections at each end of a long bone, are filled with spongy bone and red marrow. The epiphyseal plate, a layer of hyaline cartilage, is replaced by osseous tissue as the organ grows in length. The medullary cavity has a delicate membranous lining called the endosteum.
Is the epiphysis the long shaft of long bones?
Long bones are those that are longer than they are wide. The end of the long bone is the epiphysis and the shaft is the diaphysis.
Is the epiphysis the growth plate?
The growth plate, also known as the epiphyseal plate is a thin layer of cartilage that lies between the epiphyses and metaphyses, and is where the growth of long bones takes place.

What is the epiphysis function?
Epiphysis Definition - Epiphysis is the rounded end of a long bone, its primary function is to connect adjacent bones to form joints. The diaphysis, or shaft, of the long bone, is another prominent feature.
What is secondary epiphysis?
A secondary ossification center is the area of ossification that appears after the primary ossification center has already appeared – most of which appear during the postnatal and adolescent years. Most bones have more than one secondary ossification center. In long bones, the secondary centers appear in the epiphyses.
What is the difference between epiphysis and epiphyseal plate?
Epiphysis is the rounded end of a long bone. ... In between epiphysis and diaphysis, there is another part of the long bone; we call this metaphysis. Metaphysis contains the growth plate of the epiphysis known as the epiphyseal plate. Furthermore, the epiphysis is covered by articulate cartilage at the joint.
What covers the epiphysis of long bones?
The epiphyseal plate exists only in young growing long bones and aloows them to grow in length. The long bone is entirely covered by the periosteum except where the articular cartilage coats the epiphysis.
What are long bones?
A long bone is a bone that has a shaft and 2 ends and is longer than it is wide. Long bones have a thick outside layer of compact bone and an inner medullary cavity containing bone marrow. ... All of the bones in the arms and legs, except the patella, and bones of the wrist, and ankle, are long bones.
Do adults have an epiphysis?
In the adult, only the metaphysis and diaphysis are present (Figure 1). Figure 1: Anatomical differences between adult and child bone. The epiphysis is completely or mostly cartilaginous in infants.
Is epiphysis a cartilage?
The epiphyseal plate (or epiphysial plate, physis, or growth plate) is a hyaline cartilage plate in the metaphysis at each end of a long bone.
What separates the diaphysis from the epiphysis?
During bone growth the diaphysis and epiphysis are separated by the growth plate (also known as the epiphyseal line or physis) which fuses later in life. The zone adjacent to the growth plate on the diaphyseal side is called the metaphysis.
Do short bones have epiphysis?
Short bones are called that because they about as wide as they are long. There is no diaphysis on a short bone. It is made up of spongy bone surrounded by compact bone just like the epiphysis. Short bones also contain red bone marrow.
What type of epiphysis is greater trochanter?
Because the pelvic outlet in the female is larger than in the male, there is a greater distance between the greater trochanters in the female. It has two surfaces and four borders. It is a traction epiphysis.
What is the difference between epiphysis and diaphysis?
A long bone has two parts: the diaphysis and the epiphysis. The diaphysis is the tubular shaft that runs between the proximal and distal ends of the bone. ... The wider section at each end of the bone is called the epiphysis (plural = epiphyses), which is filled with spongy bone.
Where is cartilage found on a long bone?
Cartilage is generally thought of as a tissue at the ends of long bones, providing the articulating surface.
What are the 5 major parts of a long bone?
List five major parts of a long bone. Epiphysis, diaphysis, periosteum, yellow marrow, medullary cavity, compact bone, spongy bone, articular cartilage.
What is epiphysis plate?
A growth plate, also called an epiphyseal plate, is a section of cartilage located at the ends of the long bones of children and teenagers. It is here that new bone develops to add length as the child grows. Once a person has physically matured, usually in adolescence, these plates permanently close to form solid bone.
What are the function of long bones?
Long bones are hard, dense bones that provide strength, structure, and mobility. The thigh bone (femur) is a long bone.
What is atavistic epiphysis?
Atavistic epiphysis: A bone that is independent phylogenetically but is now fused with another bone. These types of fused bones are called atavistic, e.g., the coracoid process of the scapula, which has been fused in humans, but is separate in four-legged animals.
What is the function of diaphysis and epiphysis?
The diaphysis contains the medulla of the bone, which houses bone marrow. The marrow is the primary tissue responsible for the production of erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets. The epiphysis is the terminal end of the long bone that is typically responsible for articulation.
