How Sodium benzoate Is Made. Sodium benzoate is produced by combining benzoic acid with baking soda, soda ash, or lye. This reaction makes it soluble in water (benzoic acid on its own isn't soluble in water).

How is sodium benzoate created?

Sodium benzoate is produced by a reaction of benzoic acid with sodium hydroxide, which makes it disolve in water. ... While benzoic acid is found naturally in low levels in cranberries and other foods, the sodium benzoate listed on a product's nutrition label is typically synthesized in a lab.

Where does benzoic acid come from?

Benzoic acid (E210 or INS210, Table 2), a colorless aromatic carboxylic acid (Fig. 1), is naturally present in plant (fruits, nuts, spices and vegetable), fungal and animal tissues, but it can also be produced by microorganisms during food processing and/or be added as a food additive.

How do you synthesize benzoic acid?

First, you'll synthesize benzoic acid by protonating sodium benzoate with hydrochloric acid, or HCl, using water as the solvent. Sodium benzoate is very soluble in water, but benzoic acid is not, so you can filter the solid product out of the solution.

What is benzoate found in?

Where is Sodium benzoate found? Sodium benzoate is a preservative that can be found in acidic foods such as salad dressings, carbonated drinks, jams, juices, and condiments. It is also found in mouthwashes, silver polishes, cough syrups, soaps, and shampoos.

Sodium Benzoate - Chemistry Project

How do you make sodium benzoate at home?

Sodium benzoate is produced by combining benzoic acid with baking soda, soda ash, or lye. This reaction makes it soluble in water (benzoic acid on its own isn't soluble in water).

Is benzoate a preservative?

Sodium benzoate is a preservative. As a food additive, sodium benzoate has the E number E211. It is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. The mechanism starts with the absorption of benzoic acid into the cell.

What happens when you add HCl to sodium benzoate?

sodium benzoate is a sodium salt and is ionic, it dissolves in water. sodium benzoate will react with HCl to give NaCl and benzoic acid.

What is potassium benzoate used for?

Potassium benzoate is used as a preservative, as it prevents the growth of bacteria, yeast, and particularly mold. As such, it's often added to food, beauty, and skin care products to extend their shelf life ( 1 ).

What is sodium benzoate used in?

Sodium benzoate inhibits the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, mold, and other microbes in food, thus deterring spoilage. It's particularly effective in acidic foods ( 6 ). Therefore, it's commonly used in foods, such as soda, bottled lemon juice, pickles, jelly, salad dressing, soy sauce, and other condiments.

What is the difference between benzoic acid and sodium benzoate?

The key difference between benzoic acid and sodium benzoate is that benzoic acid is the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid whereas sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid. However, both these are organic compounds because both these compounds have an aromatic benzene ring, substituted with a carbonyl group.

How long does sodium benzoate stay in the body?

Your body doesn't accumulate sodium benzoate. Rather, you metabolize and excrete it in your urine within 24 hours, which contributes to its safety. Still, some people may be more sensitive to this additive.

Does vinegar contain benzoic acid?

Sodium Benzoate is a salt of benzoic acid. ... Sodium Benzoate is mostly used in acidic foods like as vinegar, fizzy drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid) and pickles (vinegar). 4. Small trace amounts are naturally found in some foods such as blueberries, apples, cranberries and plums.

What is benzoate chemistry?

Benzoate is the simplest member of the class of benzoates that is the conjugate base of benzoic acid, comprising a benzoic acid core with a proton missing to give a charge of -1. It has a role as a human xenobiotic metabolite and a plant metabolite. It is a conjugate base of a benzoic acid.

Is benzyl a benzoate?

Benzyl benzoate is a benzoate ester obtained by the formal condensation of benzoic acid with benzyl alcohol. It has been isolated from the plant species of the genus Polyalthia. It has a role as a scabicide, an acaricide and a plant metabolite. It is a benzyl ester and a benzoate ester.

Is sodium benzoate same as baking soda?

Sodium benzoate is a food preservative while sodium bicarbonate is baking soda, which is commonly used in bakeries. These two forms are in many foods, but don't have the salty taste; they are often overlooked dietary sources of sodium.

Is benzoate same as benzene?

No, however, in foods there can be an issue when Sodium Benzoate combines with Ascorbic Acid creating a form of benzene, a known carcinogen. In foods, fats and sugars hinder the formation of benzene and thus is considered safe and usable in foods by FDA. ...

What is the difference between potassium benzoate and sodium benzoate?

Potassium benzoate is used in carbonated drinks, such as waters and sodas, diet and regular. Sodium benzoate is more widely used than potassium benzoate. However, when sodium content needs to be reduced, potassium benzoate is usually the substitute.

What is bad about potassium benzoate?

Potassium Benzoate

"They can form benzene, which is a carcinogen when combined with vitamin C, the ascorbic acid in juice or soda." In addition, research shows that there may be a link between diet cola consumption and weight gain, as well as cancer and diabetes, so if you're a diet soda junkie, try to cut back.

How sodium benzoate works as a preservative?

Sodium benzoate is a preservative. ... The mechanism starts with the absorption of benzoic acid into the cell. If the intracellular pH falls to 5 or lower, the anaerobic fermentation of glucose through phosphofructokinase decreases sharply which inhibits the growth and survival of microorganisms that cause food spoilage.

What is recrystallization technique?

Recrystallization is a technique used to purify solid compounds. ... During recrystallization, an impure solid compound is dissolved in a hot liquid until the solution is saturated, and then the liquid is allowed to cool. ². The compound should then form relatively pure crystals.

Is sodium benzoate banned?

Are Countries Banning The Ingredient? Sodium Benzoate is not being banned in any country. However, the dose per product is being monitored in the US and Europe.

Is sodium benzoate bad for kidneys?

Sodium benzoate is a widely used preservative found in many foods and soft drinks. It is metabolized within mitochondria to produce hippurate, which is then cleared by the kidneys. Ingestion of sodium benzoate at the generally regarded as safe (GRAS) dose leads to a robust excursion in the plasma hippurate level.

Which is better sodium benzoate or potassium sorbate?

The effectiveness of preservative action is attributed to the amount of undissociated acid formed (14), which may explain why potassium sorbate is more effective than sodium benzoate when equal weights of the two are compared in acid products.
