Zoonotic diseases (also known as zoonoses) are caused by germs that spread between animals and people. Animals provide many benefits to people. Many people interact with animals in their daily lives, both at home and away from home.

How are zoonotic diseases spread?

In many cases, zoonotic disease, whether bacterial, viral or fungal in nature, spreads to people through contact with animals carrying the disease. It can happen when handling, petting or even getting bitten or scratched by an animal.

What factors contribute to the emergence of a new zoonosis?

Many elements can contribute to the emergence of a new zoonotic disease: microbial/virologic determinants, such as mutation, natural selection, and evolutionary progression; individual host determinants, such as acquired immunity and physiologic factors; host population determinants, such as host behavioral ...

What are the four types of zoonoses?

• Rabies. Rabies is a disease that affects the nervous system of mammals. ...
• Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Lyme disease is transmitted through tick bites. ...
• Dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. ...
• Salmonella infection. ...
• E. ...
• Psittacosis. ...
• Other types.

Is tetanus a zoonotic?

Tetanus is a zoonosis. Humans can become infected by contaminating open wounds with Clostridium tetani spores that horses or other herbivores disseminate through their feces in the environment. The person-person transmission does not occur.

How do viruses jump from animals to humans? - Ben Longdon

Is Ebola a zoonotic virus?

Ebola is a deadly zoonotic disease that is thought to have originated in fruit bats, which then contaminated other animals before the virus reached humans.

What are the factors that cause disease?

• Bacteria. These one-cell organisms are responsible for illnesses such as strep throat, urinary tract infections and tuberculosis.
• Viruses. Even smaller than bacteria, viruses cause a multitude of diseases ranging from the common cold to AIDS.
• Fungi. ...
• Parasites.

How are diseases formed?

Infection occurs when viruses, bacteria, or other microbes enter your body and begin to multiply. Disease, which typically happens in a small proportion of infected people, occurs when the cells in your body are damaged as a result of infection, and signs and symptoms of an illness appear.

What are the factors influencing infection?

• Ecological Changes and Agricultural Development. ...
• Changes in Human Demographics and Behavior. ...
• International Travel and Commerce. ...
• Technology and Industry. ...
• Microbial Adaptation and Change. ...
• Breakdown of Public Health Measures and Deficiencies in Public Health Infrastructure. ...
• For our Future.

What is the most common method of transmission of a zoonotic disease?

Most common method of transmission is through direct contact with infected urine or other bodily fluids such as saliva, or contaminated water, soil, or food.

What are the diseases caused by animals?

• Blastomycosis (Blastomyces dermatitidis) ...
• Psittacosis (Chlamydophila psittaci, Chlamydia psittaci) ...
• Trichinosis (Trichinella spiralis)
• Cat Scratch Disease (Bartonella henselae)
• Histoplasmosis (Histoplasma capsulatum)
• Coccidiomycosis (Valley Fever)

What is zoonotic virus?

A zoonosis is an infectious disease that has jumped from a non-human animal to humans. Zoonotic pathogens may be bacterial, viral or parasitic, or may involve unconventional agents and can spread to humans through direct contact or through food, water or the environment.

Which factors contribute to the prevalence of infectious diseases?

Several factors contribute to the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases, but most can be linked with the increasing number of people living and moving on earth: rapid and intense international travel; overcrowding in cities with poor sanitation; changes in handling and processing of large quantities of food ...

What are communicable diseases?

Communicable diseases, also known as infectious diseases or transmissible diseases, are illnesses that result from the infection, presence and growth of pathogenic (capable of causing disease) biologic agents in an individual human or other animal host.

What is the first stage of infection?

1. Incubation. The incubation stage includes the time from exposure to an infectious agent until the onset of symptoms. Viral or bacterial particles replicate during the incubation stage.

What are common sources of infection explain your answer?

Inhalation, e.g. breathing in airborne bacteria from coughs and sneezes. Ingestion e.g. from eating contaminated food. Direct contact, e.g. breaks in skin due to injury, skin conditions, poor hand drying. Physical contact with infected matter from wounds and bodily fluids.

Why do infections not always occur?

The immune system recognises the virus and produces a substance that neutralises the uninvited guest. The process goes on continuously without us being aware of it. If this first immune reaction is not sufficient to suppress the virus, the infection establishes itself in the body.

How are diseases caused and prevented and cured?

1. Keep immunizations up to date.
2. Wash your hands often. ...
3. Prepare and handle food carefully. ...
4. Use antibiotics only for infections caused by bacteria. ...
5. Report to your doctor any rapidly worsening infection or any infection that does not get better after taking a course of antibiotics, if prescribed.

How are communicable diseases transmitted to humans?

A communicable disease is one that is spread from one person to another through a variety of ways that include: contact with blood and bodily fluids; breathing in an airborne virus; or by being bitten by an insect.

What diseases are caused by environmental factors?

Examples include: Chemicals in cigarettes are known to cause lung cancer. Exposure to asbestos, an insulating material found in some older buildings, can cause tumors, lung cancer, and other diseases. Wood-burning stoves and poorly vented gas ranges can produce smoke or gases that can cause breathing problems.

Is Chikungunya a zoonotic disease?

Chikungunya, a zoonotic disease caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), is transmitted by infected Aedes spp mosquitoes.

Is bird flu a zoonotic disease?

Humans can be infected with zoonotic influenza viruses such as avian or swine influenza viruses.

Is rabies a zoonotic?

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease that causes progressive and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.

What are the causes of communicable diseases?

Communicable diseases are illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria that people spread to one another through contact with contaminated surfaces, bodily fluids, blood products, insect bites, or through the air. There are many examples of communicable diseases.
