Spores are very resistant, attach to the skin and germinate producing hyphae, which will then grow in the dead, superficial layers of the skin, hair or nails. Similar to other fungal dermatophytes, M. canis also secretes keratinolytic protease and gains energy from keratin in nails, hair, and skin.

How does Microsporum canis develop?

Humans become infected as a result of direct or indirect contact with infected pets. Microsporum canis generally invades hair and skin; however, some nail infections have been reported. When hair shafts are infected, M.

Which factor are necessary for the growth of Microsporum?

This fungus is often found in soil that is rich in keratinous material. However, there are other factors that can influence its growth, such as pH, relative humidity, organic carbon, nitrogen and temperature. Microsporum audouinii appears to prefer a neutral pH in the range of 6.8-7.0 and room temperature for growth.

Where does Microsporum canis come from?

Microsporum canis belongs to the group of dermatophyte fungi, which are closely related organisms that have the ability to invade the stratum corneum of the epidermis and keratinized tissues derived from it, such as skin, nails, and hair of humans and animals.

Where is Microsporum found?

Microsporum distortum is a zoophilic dermatophyte that rarely infects humans. It has been isolated from ringworm in dogs, cats, horses, swine, guinea pigs, monkeys, rabbits, and humans (4,6). It produces a yellow-greenish fluorescence in hair, where it is associated with small ectothrix spores.

Is microsporum Canis the same as ringworm?

The three most common fungal species that may cause ringworm in dogs are Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. These three species of ringworm are zoonotic, meaning they can also infect humans.

Who discovered Microsporum?

In 1842 he described a microscopic cryptogam (Trichophyton ectothrix) that is associated with a dermatological disease known as sycosis barbae. Gruby also discovered Candida (Monilia) albicans, the cause of candidiasis, and in 1843 he described a fungus (Microsporum audouinii) that is the cause of a type of ringworm.

Does Microsporum canis fluorescence?

In Microsporum canis infection, scalp hairs emit a diagnostic brilliant green fluorescence.

What kills Microsporum canis?

Bleach is the most widely available and commonly used disinfectant with reasonable efficacy against M. canis, although it can be irritating to the skin and mucous membranes.

Does Microsporum canis glow?

Half of the strains of Microsporum canis will glow “apple-green” or “yellow-green” under the lamp. The source of the fluorescence is a metabolite that growing fungi secrete onto the hairs. The Wood's lamp is a screening tool; it cannot be used to definitively diagnose ringworm.

What does M Canis look like?

Microsporum canis produces a yellow-greenish fluorescence in hair, and it is associated with small ectothrix spores. Its colonies are white to buff in color with a characteristic yellow to orange-brown reverse.

What disease does Microsporum canis cause?

Tinea corporis (B35. 6) caused by Microsporum canis which is fungal species that causes numerous forms of disease. It is part of a group of fungi known as Dermatophytes. Though mostly well known for ringworm in pets, it is also known to infect humans.

What does Microsporum cause?

Medical illustration of Microsporum canis, one of the types of fungi that causes ringworm. Ringworm is a common infection of the skin and nails that is caused by fungus. The infection is called “ringworm” because it can cause an itchy, red, circular rash.

What causes dermatophytes?

Dermatophytes are fungi that require keratin for growth. These fungi can cause superficial infections of the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatophytes are spread by direct contact from other people (anthropophilic organisms), animals (zoophilic organisms), and soil (geophilic organisms), as well as indirectly from fomites.

What is unique about microsporum Canis?

Microsporum canis is a worldwide diffused zoophilic dermatophyte which causes clinical conditions often characterised by multifocal alopecia, scaling, and circular lesions in many animal species, including humans. A large variety of oral and topical antifungal protocols is available for treating M. canis infection.

What is a kerion?

Abstract. Kerion is an inflammatory type of tinea capitis characterized by swelling and alopecia of the scalp, which could be mistaken as bacterial infection. It occurs most frequently in children.

What are the symptoms of epidermophyton?

Epidermophyton floccosum is a filamentous fungus that causes skin and nail infections in humans. This anthropophilic dermatophyte can lead to diseases such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris, tinea corporis and onychomycosis.

What kills Trichophyton mentagrophytes?

Ozone gas effectively kills laboratory strains of Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes using an in vitro test system.

How does microsporum Canis cause ringworm?

The greatest risk factor for acquiring infection is contact with damaged cells on skin, hair and nails. Microsporum canis can infect all mammals. Treatment of ringworm depends on the severity of the infection. A veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo, ointment or a dip to kill the fungus.

Where does microsporum Canis reproduce in the body?

canis mainly causes dermatophytosis in cats and dogs. And infected animals and asexual spores contaminated objects are common sources for human infection. Spores are very resistant, attach to the skin and germinate producing hyphae, which will then grow in the dead, superficial layers of the skin, hair or nails.

What's so special about Trichophyton Schoenleinii?

Trichophyton schoenleinii is an important anthropophilic dermatophyte that causes tinea favosa. It is transmitted by contagion between humans and is currently endemic in Africa. Ringworm is still frequent in Tunisia, but favus is becoming exceptional due to improvements in living conditions and hygiene.

Does microsporum affect nail?

The toenails were affected in all cases except for a single M. gypseum case of fingernail. The most common clinical presentation was distal lateral subungual onychomycosis (12/18) followed by total dystrophic onychomycosis (5/18), and superficial white onychomycosis (1/18). M.

What are the symptoms of microsporum Canis?

• Hair loss (alopecia), which may be patchy or circular.
• Broken hairs and poor hair coat.
• Reddened or ulcerated skin.
• Dandruff (scales)
• Darkened skin.
• Crusting of the skin.
• Itchiness (pruritus) may or may not be present.

How many species of microsporum are there?

The genus Microsporum is now restricted to just three species: M. audouinii, M. canis and M. ferrugineum.
