(a) Cleistogamous flowers are those which do not open at all and pollen from other plants cannot land on the stigma of these flowers . Thus , in such plants cross pollination cannot occur and only autogamy occurs. Therefore , cleistogamy ensures autogamy .

What happens in cleistogamy?

Cleistogamy is a type of automatic self-pollination of certain plants that can propagate by using non-opening, self-pollinating flowers. Especially well known in peanuts, peas, and pansy this behavior is most widespread in the grass family. However, the largest genus of cleistogamous plants is Viola.

Does cleistogamy promote cross pollination?

When pollination and fertilization occur in unopened flower bud, it is known as cleistogamy. It ensures self pollination and prevents cross pollination.

How is the cleistogamous flower are?

Complete answer: Cleistogamous flowers are those flowers that do not open because their reproductive whorls are not exposed to them. The type of pollination that takes place within them is autogamy, where the transfer of pollen grains takes place from the anther to the stigma of the same flower.

Why does cleistogamy always lead to autogamy?

Anther and stigma lie close to each other in the Cleistogamous flowers. Cleistogamous flowers are bisexual and cannot open even at maturity and hence self-pollination takes place. So, cleistogamous flowers are considered autogamous..

What is CLEISTOGAMY? What does CLEISTOGAMY mean? CLEISTOGAMY meaning, definition & explanation

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cleistogamy?

One advantage of cleistogamy is that it enables assured seed-set in the absence of pollinators. One disadvantage of cleistogamy is that continued self-pollination may lead to inbreeding depression.

What is the difference between chasmogamous and Cleistogamous?

The main difference between chasmogamous and cleistogamous is that chasmogamous flowers are open and showy, exposing their reproductive structures to the outside, whereas cleistogamous flowers remain closed and hidden so that anthers and stigmas are never exposed.

What is cleistogamy in plants?

Cleistogamy or Automatic self-pollination describes the trait of certain plants to propagate by using non-opening, self-pollinating flowers. Especially in peanuts, peas, and beans, this behaviour is most widespread in legumes.

What is cleistogamy Write advantage?

Cleistogamy refers to the self-pollination which occurs in unopened flowers. Advantage of cleistogamy: Cleistogamous flowers produce assured seed-set even in the absence of pollinators. In other words, it can be said that cleistogamous plants can propagate itself under unfavorable conditions.

What is Homogamy and cleistogamy?

As nouns the difference between homogamy and cleistogamy

is that homogamy is (botany) fertilization of a flower by pollen from the same plant while cleistogamy is (botany) the production of flowers which do not open, and are self-fertilized in the bud.

What is Cleistogamy what is its significance?

Cleistogamy is a type of automatic self-pollination of certain plants that can propagate by using non-opening, self-pollinating flowers. Especially well known in peanuts, peas, and pansy this behavior is most widespread in the grass family.

Are cleistogamous flowers asexual?

The phrase 'Some plant species can produce combinations of chasmogamous flowers (sexual reproduction) and cleistogamous flowers (asexual reproduction) (Ronsheim and Bever 2000)' in “Background” section should read 'Some plant species can produce combinations of chasmogamous flowers and cleistogamous flowers (Ronsheim ...

How is pearl millet Protogynous?

Pearl millet is a protogynous species. The styles start protruding two to three days after the emergence of the panicle. The stylar branches protrude first from the florets in the upper middle region of the panicle and then proceed both up and downwards.

What is cleistogamy give example?

Answer: Cleistogamy is a type of automatic self-pollination of certain plants that can propagate by using non-opening, self-pollinating flowers. ... They remain closed causing self-pollination. Examples: Viola, Oxalis, Commelina, Cardamine.

Is Hydrilla a Hydrophily?

Pollination carried out through water is called hydrophily. ... (E.g. freshwater plants like Vallisneria, Hydrilla; marine water plants like Zostera). Light unwettable pollen grains are present in these plants.

What is cleistogamous flower Class 12?

Flower which remains open and exposes the anther and stigma are called chasmogamous flowers. Cleistogamous flowers do not open at all. Because anthers and stigma are not exposed, cross pollination cannot take place in such cases.

What is the disadvantage of cleistogamy?

The disadvantage of cleistogamy is that it suppresses the formation of genetically superior plants because of the property of self-pollination; it reduces the genetic variation among the plant. Note:The chasmogamous flowers open after the self-pollination process.

Which of the following are disadvantages of cleistogamy?

The disadvantages of cleistogamy are: Continued self-pollination may lead to inbreeding depression. This self-pollination does not help in producing new varieties and species. Cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous.

How do the pollen of vallisneria protect themselves?

So, to protect the pollen grains of the male Vallisneria plant, the pollen grains are covered with a mucilaginous coat. This coat prevents pollen grains from getting wet in the water.

Is cleistogamy seen in papaya?

The results indicated that cleistogamy might occur in the papaya tree, which enables self-pollination. Rodríguez et al. (1990) working with other Solo cultivars, also observed the occurrence of cleistogamy in papaya.

What does Dichogamy mean?

: the production of male and female reproductive elements at different times by a hermaphroditic organism in order to ensure cross-fertilization.

What is Hydrophily In short?

Hydrophily is a fairly uncommon form of pollination whereby pollen is distributed by the flow of waters, particularly in rivers and streams. Hydrophilous species fall into two categories: Those that distribute their pollen to the surface of water.

Do chasmogamous flowers require pollinating agents?

The majority of angiosperms bear chasmogamous flowers, which means the flowers expose their mature anthers and stigma to the pollinating agents. There is another group of plants which set seeds without exposing their sex organs. Such flowers are called cleistogamous and the phenomenon cleistogamy.

Are sunflowers chasmogamous?

In Helianthus (sunflower), Rosa (rose) and Gossypium (cotton), flowers are chasmogamous. So, the correct answer is option B, Commelina. Note: Cleistogamous flower prevents the cross pollination in bisexual or hermaphrodite flowers.

What do you mean by chasmogamous flowers and cleistogamous flower?

Chasmogamous flowers open at maturity. Cleistogamous flowers do not open and remain in the bud state. Chasmogamous flowers are usually cross-pollinated (and sometimes self-pollinated). Cleistogamous flowers can only carry out self-pollination.
