Depending on the type of test, the evaporation line may look more gray than pink. If an evaporation line appears, it is best to take another test for an accurate result.

Can an EVAP line have color?

In early pregnancy, there may be very little hCG in the urine, and the positive line may be faint. Even a faint positive line has color, and this distinguishes it from an evaporation line, which is colorless.

Can EVAP lines be faint?

Evaporation lines are common and can occur with any pregnancy test. An evaporation line is a line that appears in the results window of a pregnancy test as the urine dries. It can leave a faint, colorless line. If you're not familiar with evaporation lines, you might see this line and think you're pregnant.

How common are evaporation lines on pregnancy test?

An evaporation line on a pregnancy test is basically a false positive. While true false positives and false negatives are fairly rare,1 the evaporation line is the closest most women will come to having an error on their pregnancy tests.

Can a pink pregnancy test be wrong?

Though not as accurate as a pregnancy test at the doctors, an at-home pregnancy test can measure hCG levels with 97 to 99 percent accuracy. Pregnancy tests with blue or pink dye typically show one line if the result is negative and two if hCG is detected, meaning the result is positive.

Can a pregnancy test show positive if it sits too long?

If you let the test sit too long the the test may show a false positive result. A false positive is when the tests shows you are pregnant when you actually are not. Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin, HCG.

The hook effect happens when you have too much hCG in your blood or urine. How is this possible? Well, the high levels of hCG overwhelm the pregnancy test and it doesn't bond with them correctly or at all. Rather than two lines saying positive, you get one line that incorrectly says negative.

Can a pregnancy test turn positive after 30 minutes?

This usually ranges between a couple of minutes up until 10 minutes later. If you see a positive result beyond this time frame, you may be left second-guessing the results. However, the false-positive reading, in this case, is due to something called an evaporation line.

The reason for this is due to the urine evaporating if left for too long; it can leave a faint line which can be mistaken as a positive test.

Can you oversaturate a pregnancy test?

Although many factors can contribute to a false-negative pregnancy test, the hook effect occurs when the woman has a high concentration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the pregnancy hormone. The high levels oversaturate the test and result in a false negative.

Can too much pee on a pregnancy test make it negative?

Excess fluids can impact the accuracy of the test results, so if your urine is diluted or pale yellow, hold off on taking a test. Diluted urine tends to also have diluted hCG levels which can skew the test results. Take a test when you naturally need to pee.

Can an evaporation line be pink?

Then it's probably an evaporation line. When did the line show up? If a pink line showed up quickly, then it is likely a positive, pregnant result. If the line only showed up much later (say ten minutes or more) than the control line, it may be an evaporation line.
