For the same force, a long cannon imparts more speed to a cannonball than a short cannon. This is because the force acts for a longer time interval on the cannonball in a long cannon, and this results in a greater impulse, or more momentum being transferred to the cannonball.

Which cannon imparts the greater speed to a cannonball?

The long cannon imparts a greater impulse because the force acts over a longer time. (A greater impulse produces a greater change in momentum, so a long cannon imparts more speed to a cannonball than a short cannon.)

When an impulse is applied with the same force for twice the time?

Impulse is also directly proportional to the time for which the force is applied - twice as long means twice the impulse, three times as long means three times the impulse. So, the impulse exerted on an object depends directly on both how much force is applied and for how long the force is applied.

Will a cannonball travel farther if shot from a longer cannon?

For the same force, why does a longer cannon impart more speed to a cannonball? ~Nine times farther. ... ~A longer barrel imparts more impulse because of the longer time the force acts.

Which has more momentum after firing the cannonball or the recoiling canon?

If it were to roll at the same speed but had twice as much mass, what could you say about its momentum? Double. A cannon recoils from launching a cannonball. ... Object A has more momentum.

Which of Newton's laws is most closely connected with the conservation of momentum?

Conservation of momentum is actually a direct consequence of Newton's third law. Consider a collision between two objects, object A and object B.

What happens to the cannon after firing the cannon ball?

When a cannon is fired, the cannon ball gains forward momentum and the cannon gains backward momentum. ... The total momentum of the cannon and the cannon ball after being fired is also zero, with the cannon and cannon ball moving in opposite directions.

What is the average speed of a cannonball?

It seems likely to be in between 250 and 100 m/s (250 m/s is about 820 feet per second).

How fast does a cannonball go in mph?

106 mph (171 km/h) average.

Which cannon imparts a greater impulse to a cannonball a long cannon or a short one?

4. The long cannon imparts a greater impulse because the force acts over a longer time. (A greater impulse produces a greater change in momentum, so a long cannon imparts more speed to a cannonball than a short can- non does.)

Is impulse the same for both objects?

Impulse is force multiplied by time, and time of contact is the same for both, so the impulse is the same in magnitude for the two trucks.

Is impulse always the same?

In a collision, objects experience an impulse; the impulse causes and is equal to the change in momentum. ... This impulse would cause a momentum change of 720 kg•m/s. In a collision, the impulse experienced by an object is always equal to the momentum change.

How does Dr Hewitt break the piece of wood?

How does Dr. Hewitt break the piece of wood? He causes a change in momentum of his hand over a short period of time.

Why does a cannonball fired from a longer barrel travel further?

impulse. ... The longer barrel provides for a longer time for the force to act, and therefore, a greater impulse. A cannonball shot from a cannon with a long barrel will emerge with greater speed because the cannonball receives a greater..

Does more kinetic energy mean more speed?

It turns out that an object's kinetic energy increases as the square of its speed. A car moving 40 mph has four times as much kinetic energy as one moving 20 mph, while at 60 mph a car carries nine times as much kinetic energy as at 20 mph.

Do Civil War cannon balls explode?

Contrary to Hollywood films and popular lore, these cannonballs did not explode on contact. ... These shells and spherical case shot were designed to explode only when a flame reached the interior charge. Another widely held misconception is that black powder becomes unstable over time.

Is cannonball Run legal?

NO, Cannonball is not a race. It is illegal to race or exceed the posted speed limit on public roads. Cannonball is a long distance road rally rooted in adventure and exploration, think of it as the ultimate vacation with your car.

Do cannon balls bounce?

It could bounce when it hit the ground, striking men at each bounce. The casualties from round shot were extremely gory; when fired directly into an advancing column, a cannonball was capable of passing straight through up to forty men. ... Round shot has been totally replaced by modern shells.

Why does the cannon ball go faster than the cannon?

Newton's third law states that for every action there must be an equal and opposite reaction, so the forces on the cannon and cannonball are equal in magnitude (but not direction). and the mass of the cannon is larger than the mass of the cannonball, so the acceleration is lesser for the cannon than for the cannonball.

How far can an old cannon shoot?

The typical Civil War shell had a range of about 1,500 yards — or just under a mile. However, when enemy troops were approaching, the artillery had two options.

What's the fastest Cannonball Run?

With David Maher riding shotgun, Roy did the Cannonball Run in a record-breaking time of 31 hours and 4 minutes, driving a Le Mans' Blue 2000 BMW M5.

When a cannon is fired How does the size of the force of the cannon on the cannonball compare with the force of the cannonball on the cannon?

When a cannon is fired, the force that the cannon exerts on the cannonball ("action" force) is exactly the same size as the force the cannonball exerts on the cannon ("reaction" force). The acceleration of the cannonball, however, is MUCH larger than the acceleration of the cannon!

Do action-reaction forces act on the same object?

First, both forces act on the same object while action-reaction forces ALWAYS act on different objects. An action-reaction pair of forces acts on the pair of objects that are the cause of the forces in question.

Which direction is the net force on the canon?

Viewing the cannonball on its own as the explosion occurs, a net force acts in the horizontal direction (the normal force from the cannon's barrel and the weight of the ball cancel one another in the vertical direction.
