The food bolus is forced inferiorly from the pharynx into the esophagus after the sequential contraction of the three pharyngeal constrictor muscles (the superior, middle and inferior constrictor muscles), which together make up the external circular layer of the pharynx.

What is the process used in moving the bolus through the esophagus?

Alternating contraction and relaxation of these muscles is called peristalsis. Peristaltic waves push the swallowed bolus down the esophagus. In the stomach, peristalsis churns swallowed food, mixing it with gastric juices.

Where does food bolus go next after you chew and swallow?

Once the mouth and throat muscles begin the process of swallowing, the food bolus moves down the esophagus fairly quickly, aided by involuntary (not deliberate) muscular movements of the esophagus. The bolus then passes through a muscle that separates the esophagus from the stomach, called the esophageal sphincter.

Which portions of the pharynx does food pass through when swallowing?

The mouth closes, and the soft portion of the roof of the mouth (soft palate) rises so that the passageway between the nasal and oral cavities is closed off. The tongue rolls backward, propelling food into the oral pharynx, a chamber behind the mouth that functions to transport food and air.

How does the pharynx move food?

The superior pharyngeal constrictor muscles contract, initiating a rapid pharyngeal peristaltic, or squeezing, contraction that moves down the pharynx, propelling the bolus in front of it. The walls and structures of the lower pharynx are elevated to engulf the oncoming mass of food.

Swallowing Reflex, Phases and Overview of Neural Control, Animation.

What happens to food in the pharynx?

Food is forced into the pharynx by the tongue. When food reaches the opening, sensory receptors around the fauces respond and initiate an involuntary swallowing reflex. This reflex action has several parts. The uvula is elevated to prevent food from entering the nasopharynx.

What is pharynx and its function?

The pharynx, commonly called the throat, is a passageway that extends from the base of the skull to the level of the sixth cervical vertebra. It serves both the respiratory and digestive systems by receiving air from the nasal cavity and air, food, and water from the oral cavity.

What happens during Deglutition?

Deglutition is the transport of a bolus of food or liquid from the mouth to the stomach. Normal deglutition requires precisely timed contraction and relaxation of numerous muscles of the oral and pharyngeal regions (Table 54-1).

What structure moves food from the pharynx to the stomach?

Esophagus: The esophagus is a muscular tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the stomach. The esophagus contracts as it moves food into the stomach.

Which portion of the pharynx connects with the esophagus?

The laryngopharynx or hypopharynx is the caudal part of the pharynx; it is the part of the throat that connects to the esophagus and trachea. It lies inferior to the epiglottis and marks the division between the respiratory and digestive system pathways.

Where does a bolus go?

After formation, the bolus will be swallowed, transported through the esophagus, and move into the stomach.

What is bolus in digestion?

bolus, food that has been chewed and mixed in the mouth with saliva. Chewing helps to reduce food particles to a size readily swallowed; saliva adds digestive enzymes, water, and mucus that help chemically to reduce food particles, hydrate them for taste, and lubricate them for easy swallowing.

How does food bolus move from the mouth to the stomach?

Ingestion starts both chemical and mechanical digestion. In deglutition, the tongue pushes the bolus toward the pharynx (throat) and into the esophagus, a muscular tube that leads from the throat to the stomach. ... From the esophagus, the bolus passes through a sphincter (muscular ring) into the stomach.

What happens during swallowing quizlet?

During swallowing, the muscles of the soft palate and uvula close off the nasal cavity to prevent food frm entering. The Lateral pterygoids contract and protrude the mandible, by moving the condyles anteriorly and inferiorly along the slopes of the right and left articular eminences of the tempoal bone.

What happens to the epiglottis as the bolus enters the esophagus?

Notice how the epiglottis closes the trachea, preventing the food to be inhaled. During this phase, respiration is inhibited, and the epiglottis blocks off the upper airway to prevent the food bolus and liquids from entering the airway and being inhaled. If food does enter the airway, the coughing reflex is triggered.

How does food move down the esophagus?

Peristalsis squeezes your esophageal muscles from top to bottom. This pushes food and liquid along. If you could see peristalsis, it would look like a wave passing down your esophagus. To keep food and liquids moving in the right direction, your digestive tract has special muscles along its course called sphincters.

How is food digested in the stomach?

After you swallow, peristalsis pushes the food down your esophagus into your stomach. Stomach. Glands in your stomach lining make stomach acid and enzymes that break down food. Muscles of your stomach mix the food with these digestive juices.

What is the process of digestion step by step?

There are four steps in the digestion process: ingestion, the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food, nutrient absorption, and elimination of indigestible food.

What happens to the food in the stomach Class 7?

from the mouth into stomach, The food is further digested in the stomach. The food is churned in the stomach for about three hours. During this time, the food breaks down into still smaller pieces and makes a semi-solid paste. The inner lining of stomach secretes mucus, hydrochloric acid and digestive juices.

What is the swallowing process?

Swallowing is the process by which food is transported from the mouth to the stomach. Functionally, it may be divided into three phases—preparatory, transfer, and transport phases—that follow each other in a sequence. ... Anatomically, swallowing has been divided into three phases: oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal.

What is the pharynx?

The hollow tube inside the neck that starts behind the nose and ends at the top of the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (the tube that goes to the stomach). The pharynx is about 5 inches long, depending on body size. Also called throat.

What is involved in swallowing?

The swallowing reflex, which is mediated by the swallowing center in the medulla (the lower part of the brainstem), causes the food to be further pushed back into the pharynx and the esophagus (food pipe) by rhythmic and involuntary contractions of several muscles in the back of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus.

Why is pharynx considered essential to the process of swallowing?

It has two crucial biological features: (1) food passage, propelling the food bolus through the pharynx and UES to the esophagus; and (2) airway protection, insulating the larynx and trachea from the pharynx during food passage to prevent the food from entering the airway.

What does the pharynx secrete?

The lining of the pharynx secretes mucus to lubricate the pharynx and helps in smooth propulsion of food down to the esophagus and reduce throat irritation.

How does the pharynx aid in digestion?

Because of its location, the pharynx helps the respiratory system by allowing air to make its way to the respiratory tract. For digestion, the use of the muscles surrounding the pharynx (both circular constrictive muscles and longitudinal muscles) work together to send food and drink down to the esophagus.
