First, climb to the altitude you require at Vyse. After level-off, you may be able to maintain Vyse or higher at 75% power on the good engine. If not, take the power required, as you can always change that engine too.

Does Vyse change?

Like other angle-of-attack-related airspeeds, there are no published correction values for VYSE at lighter weights because by definition VYSE exists only at maximum weight. However, the effect of VYSE does decrease with a reduction in aircraft weight.

Why does VIX increase with altitude?

Therefore, dropping straight down from the tangent point (point A) to point B, we find that the best angle of climb speed has increased to 75 knots. And this is the basic reason why Vx increases with altitude.

How are VX and VY affected by altitude?

Vy is slightly faster, and is the Maximum RATE of climb. It allows one to climb to altitude in the shortest time. ... With increasing altitude, Vx increases slightly while Vy decreases, until they are the same at the absolute ceiling, where the airplane cannot go higher.

Does drag increase with height?

In summary, the Reynolds-Number decreases with an increasing altitude, which means that drag increases with an increasing altitude - assuming velocity and reference length are constant.

Why Vx & Vy Change With Altitude

Does lift decrease with altitude?

Lift changes with altitude, but there is more to it than just the height above sea level. The physical quantity which actually affects the lift as we change altitude is the air density. Air density itself decreases with altitude; and it is this decrease which causes the lift to drop.

What drag increases with altitude?

Induced Drag Increases As You Climb

But your weight's the same. So how do you make up for the loss of lift? You increase your angle of attack. At higher altitudes, because of the less dense air, you need to fly at a higher angle of attack for a given true airspeed.

Is VY always decreasing?

As the object moves along the path, its x-component of velocity, V_ix, remains constant, but its y-component of velocity, V_y, first keeps decreasing until the object reaches its highest elevation at C.

Does VY change with weight?

Vy is your best rate of climb speed, and it changes with weight. ... So if you're under max gross, you actually need to fly slower than your published Vy to achieve your weight-adjusted Vy speed.

What is VX for a Cessna 172?

The Cessna 172 POH lists VX as64 KIAS; for the Cirrus SR22 it is 78KIAS, and for the Tecnam Light Sport airplane, it is 60 KIAS. The soft-field takeoff combines the use of VX and VY, as well.

What is VX and VY relationship?

Vx is the speed where you have the most excess force (thrust), and Vy is the speed where you have the most excess power (horsepower).

How do you get VX and VY?

1. Horizontal velocity component: Vx = V * cos(α)
2. Vertical velocity component: Vy = V * sin(α)
3. Time of flight: t = [Vy + √(Vy² + 2 * g * h)] / g.
4. Range of the projectile: R = Vx * [Vy + √(Vy² + 2 * g * h)] / g.
5. Maximum height: hmax = h + Vy² / (2 * g)

How does Vyse change with respect to weight density altitude?

Density Altitude? With respect to weight: With an increase or decrease in weight, VYSE increases and decreases respectively. ... An increase in density altitude, your required VYSE will decrease.

Why is Vyse important?

Vyse is "best-rate-of-climb airspeed, single-engine." It is also the airspeed at which the airplane is able to maintain level flight with the least power and gain the most altitude per unit of time with an inoperative engine. ... Therefore if you cannot maintain at least level flight at Vyse, you darn sure cannot at Vxse.

What is Vsse aviation?

VSSE—safe, intentional OEI speed—originally known as safe single-engine speed, now formally defined in Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 23, Airworthiness Standards, and required to be established and published in the AFM/POH. ... VREF is 1.3 times the stall speed in the landing configuration.

What does VX mean in aviation?

VX is the speed at which the airplane achieves the greatest gain in altitude for a given distance over the ground. It is usually slightly less than VY, which is the greatest gain in altitude per unit of time. The specific speeds to be used for a given airplane are stated in the FAA-approved AFM/POH.

What causes vy to change?

There is a vertical acceleration caused by gravity; its value is 9.8 m/s/s, down, The vertical velocity of a projectile changes by 9.8 m/s each second, The horizontal motion of a projectile is independent of its vertical motion.

What is best angle of climb?

Best angle of climb, also known as Vx, is the true airspeed that allows an aircraft to gain the most amount of altitude in the shortest distance across the ground. The best angle of climb speed occurs when the difference between thrust available and thrust required is greatest.

Why does stall speed increase with altitude?

As air density decreases with increasing altitude, more lift must be generated by an aerofoil to sustain flight and so the true air speed at which an aerofoil will stall will increase.

Does altitude increase stall speed?

At higher altitudes, the air density is lower than at sea level. ... For example, the indicated airspeed at which an aircraft stalls can be considered constant, but the true airspeed at which it stalls increases with altitude.

What is the highest flying military plane?

The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and manufactured by the American aerospace company Lockheed Corporation. It was operated by both the United States Air Force (USAF) and NASA.

Does flying higher reduce drag?

Actually aerodynamic drag stays the same when altitude is increased.

Does L d change with altitude?

In zero wind conditions, L/D will equal distance traveled divided by altitude lost. Achieving the maximum distance for altitude lost in wind conditions requires further modification of the best airspeed, as does alternating cruising and thermaling.

Does altitude affect air resistance?

Specifically as asked then yes wind resistance (drag) is lower at high altitudes. The reason is the air is thinner than at low altitude. An analolgy may be that sea level the air is like treacle and at high altitude the air is like water.
