Erythropoietin (Epo) is a glycoprotein that promotes the proliferation and differentiation of erythrocyte precursors. The major site of Epo production is the kidney, while the liver is the main extrarenal site of Epo production.

Where is erythropoietin secreted?

Erythropoietin is produced by interstitial fibroblasts in the kidney in close association with the peritubular capillary and proximal convoluted tubule. It is also produced in perisinusoidal cells in the liver. Liver production predominates in the fetal and perinatal period; renal production predominates in adulthood.

Which part of kidney produces erythropoietin?

The critmeter is found at the tip of the juxtamedullary region of the cortical labyrinth in the kidney, where erythropoietin is made physiologically.

Does the liver and spleen release EPO?

Epo is primarily expressed by hepatocytes during the fetal state. ... Epo mRNA is also detectable in brain, liver, spleen, lung and testis, but these organs are not able to substitute for renal Epo in chronic kidney disease (CKD).

What is the target organ of erythropoietin?

EPO acts in later stages of the maturation of erythroid progenitor cells. Its primary target cells in bone marrow are colony-forming unit erythroid (CFU-E) cells.

Erythropoietin (EPO)

What stimulates the release of erythropoietin?

The kidney cells that make EPO are specialized and are sensitive to low oxygen levels in the blood coming into the kidney. These cells release erythropoietin when the oxygen level is low in the kidney.

What is the mechanism behind the secretion of erythropoietin?

Erythropoietin (Epo) is a glycoprotein hormone produced in the kidney that acts on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. A negative feedback system, in which tissue oxygenation controls Epo production and Epo controls red blood cell (RBC) production, provides homeostasis in oxygen delivery to body tissues.

Is erythropoietin a hormone or cytokine?

Erythropoietin (Epo) is an unusual cytokine in that it is not produced by haematopoietic cells, only by kidney or liver. It acts as a true hormone, stimulating erythroid precursors to generate red blood cells.

Does spleen produce erythropoietin?

Spleen as a production site for erythropoietin.

How does EPO stimulate RBC production?

Central to this mechanism is erythropoietin (EPO), a cytokine secreted by the kidney in response to low blood oxygen tension. Circulating EPO binds its cognate receptor (EPOR) on bone marrow erythroid progenitors, triggering multiple signaling pathways that support differentiation into mature RBCs.

How erythropoietin is formed?

Erythropoietin is produced and released into the blood by the kidneys in response to low blood oxygen levels (hypoxemia). The amount of erythropoietin released depends on how low the oxygen level is and the ability of the kidneys to produce erythropoietin.

Which hormone produced in the kidneys and liver stimulates red blood cell production?

Healthy kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin or EPO, which stimulates the bone marrow to make red blood cells needed to carry oxygen (O2) throughout the body.

Do JG cells secrete erythropoietin?

The juxtaglomerular cells of the kidneys secrete erythropoietin.

What type of secretion is erythropoietin?

Erythropoietin is a hormone, produced mainly in the kidneys, which stimulates the production and maintenance of red blood cells.

Why is EPO produced in the kidney?

The kidney cells that make erythropoietin are sensitive to low oxygen levels in the blood that travels through the kidney. These cells make and release erythropoietin when the oxygen level is too low.

What is red pulp of spleen?

The red pulp of the spleen is composed of connective tissue known also as the cords of Billroth and many splenic sinusoids that are engorged with blood, giving it a red color. Its primary function is to filter the blood of antigens, microorganisms, and defective or worn-out red blood cells.

Why is it called white pulp?

White pulp is a histological designation for regions of the spleen (named because it appears whiter than the surrounding red pulp on gross section), that encompasses approximately 25% of splenic tissue. White pulp consists entirely of lymphoid tissue.

What hormone is secreted by the kidneys quizlet?

The kidneys make two main hormones, vitamin D and erythropoietin. Vitamin D is essential for a number of different functions in the body.

What is the function of erythropoietin?

Erythropoietin (Epo), which is produced by the kidney in the adult and by the liver in the fetus, increases red blood cells by supporting the survival of erythroid progenitor cells and stimulating their differentiation and proliferation via binding to Epo receptor (EpoR).

Why is erythropoietin a cytokine?

Erythropoietin is a cytoprotective cytokine induced by the hypoxia inducible factor family. EPO is the hematopoietic factor responsible for the production of red blood cells and for this function is produced mainly by the adult kidney.

Where are erythrocytes formed?

Red blood cells are formed in the red bone marrow of bones. Stem cells in the red bone marrow are called hemocytoblasts. They give rise to all of the formed elements in blood. If a stem cell commits to becoming a cell called a proerythroblast, it will develop into a new red blood cell.

How does EPO work in the body?

EPO is a peptide hormone that is produced naturally by the human body. EPO is released from the kidneys and acts on the bone marrow to stimulate red blood cell production. An increase in red blood cells improves the amount of oxygen that the blood can carry to the body's muscles.

What is the function of erythropoietin produced by the kidneys quizlet?

Erythropoietin (secreted by the kidneys) stimulates the production of erythrocytes in the bone marrow.

What hormone stimulates the process of erythropoiesis?

Erythropoietin (EPO) is the key hormone responsible for effective erythropoiesis, and iron is the essential mineral required for hemoglobin production.
