Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for 80% of all nonmelanoma skin cancers. Its metastasis is extremely rare, ranging between 0.0028 and 0.55 of all BCC cases. The usual metastasis to lymph nodes, lungs, bones, or skin is from the primary tumor situated in the head and neck region in nearly 85% cases.

How long does basal cell carcinoma take to metastasize?

In one review of 170 cases, the median interval between onset of BCC and metastasis was 9 years, with a range of less than 1 year to 45 years. Despite the long period from onset to metastasis, the tumor behaves aggressively once metastasis occurs.

How often does basal cell metastasis?

As metastasis of basal cell carcinoma is extremely rare (1 in 1,000 to 35,000), many authors sought or postulated histologic "degeneration" into a squamous cell carcinoma, but no such unequivocal evidence has ever been found.

What happens if you don't remove basal cell carcinoma?

Without treatment, a basal cell carcinoma could grow -- slowly -- to encompass a large area of skin on your body. In addition, basal cell carcinoma has the potential to cause ulcers and permanently damage the skin and surrounding tissues.

Will basal cell carcinoma metastasize if left untreated?

It usually does not spread to distant parts of the body or into the blood stream. Basal cell carcinoma does spread on the skin and can become quite large over time. If left untreated, it can spread to the muscles, nerves, bones, brain, and in rare cases, cause death.

2014: Who Says Basal Cell Carcinoma Cant Metastasize

What is the survival rate for basal cell carcinoma?

The 5-year survival rate of people with Merkel cell cancer is 63%. If the cancer is found early, before it has spread from where it started, the 5-year survival rate is 76%. Lymph nodes are tiny, bean-shaped organs that help fight infection.

Does basal cell carcinoma grow deep?

Basal cell carcinoma spreads very slowly and very rarely will metastasize, Dr. Christensen says. But if it's not treated, basal cell carcinoma can continue to grow deeper under the skin and cause significant destruction to surrounding tissues. It can even become fatal.

What is an aggressive BCC?

Aggressive BCC tends to have no or less pink within the tumor area and absent or few vessels in the central tumor area compared to other BCC subtypes. Superficial BCC typically has the dermatoscopy vascular features of increased pink and relative absence of large diameter vessels.

Which is more serious basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma?

Though not as common as basal cell (about one million new cases a year), squamous cell is more serious because it is likely to spread (metastasize).

Can you have basal cell carcinoma for years?

Basal cell carcinoma usually grows very slowly and often doesn't show up for many years after intense or long-term exposure to the sun. You can get it at a younger age if you're exposed to a lot of sun or use tanning beds.

Does basal cell carcinoma spread to organs?

The cancer has spread to areas below the skin, such as into muscle, bone, cartilage, or lymph nodes, but only those near the original tumor. It has not spread to distant organs.

Has basal cell carcinoma killed anyone?

Death from basal and squamous cell skin cancers is uncommon. It's thought that about 2,000 people in the US die each year from these cancers, and that this rate has been dropping in recent years.

Can basal cell spread to lymph nodes?

The choice of which type to use depends on your own case. In rare cases basal and squamous cell skin cancer can spread to the nearby lymph nodes (bean-size sacs of immune system cells.) Ask your doctor if your lymph nodes will be tested. Basal and squamous cell cancers don't often spread to other parts of the body.

How do you know if squamous cell carcinoma has spread?

• The tumor is thicker than 2 millimeters.
• The tumor has grown into the lower dermis or subcutis layers of the skin.
• The tumor has grown into the nerves in the skin.
• The tumor is present on the ear or on a hair-bearing lip.

Can basal cells turn into melanoma?

Basal cell carcinoma does not progress into melanoma. Each is a separate and distinct type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer and one of two major nonmelanoma skin cancer types (the other is squamous cell carcinoma).

How long does it take to recover from basal cell carcinoma surgery?

Depending upon the size, may take up to 4 to 6 weeks for the wound to heal completely, but infection, bleeding and pain are uncommon. Close the wound with sutures (stitches).

Can basal cell carcinoma disappear on its own?

Basal cell carcinomas may appear to heal on their own but inevitably will recur.

Is Mohs surgery necessary?

Mohs surgery is not necessary for all skin cancers, but it is useful when: The location of the skin cancer is near areas that are important for daily activities, like the fingers, or for appearance, like the nose; Earlier treatments have not worked; A tumor is large; and.

Is Mohs surgery painful?

Mohs surgery uses a local anesthesia, which numbs only the area being worked on. You may feel some discomfort when the anesthesia is injected, but this usually lasts only a few seconds. Once the area is numb, the surgery itself should not be painful. After the surgery, the area of the surgery may feel sore.

Is basal cell carcinoma painful?

It may feel itchy, tender, or painful. Basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers can look like a variety of marks on the skin. The key warning signs are a new growth, a spot or bump that's getting larger over time, or a sore that doesn't heal within a few weeks.

What does aggressive basal cell carcinoma look like?

What does BCC look like? BCCs can look like open sores, red patches, pink growths, shiny bumps, scars or growths with slightly elevated, rolled edges and/or a central indentation. At times, BCCs may ooze, crust, itch or bleed. The lesions commonly arise in sun-exposed areas of the body.

Is basal cell carcinoma benign or malignant?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is most often a benign form of skin cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. However, it's the most frequently occurring form of all skin cancers, with more than 3 million people developing BCC in the U.S. every year. 1.

What is considered a large BCC?

A size larger than 3 cm has been described as a high-risk feature [13]. Notwithstanding the foregoing, this risk factor has been more accurately defined as 1 cm for head and neck tumors and more than 2 cm in other body areas [11].

Is Basal cell hereditary?

Inheritance and Risk

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are two of the most common malignancies in the United States and are often caused by sun exposure, although several hereditary syndromes and genes are also associated with an increased risk of developing these cancers.

What is the best way to remove basal cell carcinoma?

Surgery. High-risk basal cell carcinoma is usually removed by surgery, which can be done anywhere on your body. To perform the procedure, called standard surgical excision or removal, your surgeon injects a local (area) anesthetic and then removes the tumor from your skin.
