Nearly every competitive recurve archer will need a plunger after completing introductory lessons. The right plunger increases consistency and can last years, maybe even decades. It helps make your bow more forgiving, but don't ask it to fix every shooting problem.

What is the purpose of a plunger on a recurve bow?

A plunger is a small cylinder that threads into your bow's riser above the arrow rest. A plunger houses a spring, and the plunger's tip contacts your arrow shaft. Plungers have two main functions: They set the center shot, and absorb imperfections as the arrow takes flight.

Do you need a plunger with an arrow rest?

The plunger is an adjustable spring loaded piston(?) that has two functions - to set the lateral angle of the arrow, and to absorb lateral motion of the arrow upon release. Without a plunger, you aren't able to set how much your arrow points to the left/right when it sits on the shelf very much.

Should a recurve bow be unstrung when not in use?

Unstring your bow when you're not using it. That is, unless your bow is fiberglass. If you have a fiberglass bow, it doesn't hurt it to leave it strung all the time. ... When your bow is strung, the belly is under compression, and over time that compression will make the bow weaker and weaker, and it will take on set.

Can you keep a recurve bow strung?

Modern recurve and longbows made from synthetic materials can be left strung for up to 3 weeks, but should be unstrung for long-term storage. Compound bows can be left strung indefinitely. All bows are made to last but only when they are properly cared for.

How long do recurve limbs last?

The recurve bow has more parts than a longbow, but the limbs on a recurve bow are replaceable (on take down style recurve bows). You can expect the limbs to last around 10 to 20 years unless they suffer mechanical damage. Broken tips, cracks, and splintering are the main signs that the limbs are getting old.

When should I Unstring my recurve bow?

Fiberglass laminated longbows and recurves only need to be unstrung if you don't plan to shoot them for an extended period of time or expect to take a trip with them in a hot car. All-wooden laminated bows and selfbows need to be unstrung when you're done shooting to prevent the limbs from retaining the bent shape.

What is a clicker on a recurve bow?

Clickers are a thin flat piece of carbon, plastic or spring steel that rests on the arrow while it's nocked to the bowstring. When the archer pulls the arrow back, the clicker “falls” off the point of the arrow and clicks when striking the riser. At this point, archers relax their fingers to release the arrow.

How does a recurve arrow rest work?

Recurve Arrow Rests: Some Reviews

It's made of a soft plastic that flexes forward when you shoot, so your vanes don't come into contact with the rest when they leave your bow string. It's got an adhesive back, so you simply remove the sticker, and apply it to your riser. Easy peasy, good to go!

Are plungers allowed in Barebow?

Plunger Button

I would always recommend using a plunger when shooting Barebow. The plunger will counter the Archers Paradox and straighten the flight of the arrow as it leaves the bow.

What is the plunger button?

A Plunger Button is a fine tuning device with an adjustable spring cushioned tip inside a housing. ... The plunger button is used to compensate for the arrow's flex, since the arrow flexes as the string pushes onto it with a very high acceleration, creating what is known as the archer's paradox.

Should you Destring recurve bow?

In the simplest terms, if you shoot regularly enough you shouldn't have to unstring your Recurve bow at all. The bow itself was designed to be strung and to hold plenty of tension, so leaving it strung should not be a problem unless the bow itself is weak or faulty in some way.

Should bows be stored unstrung?

A pure fiberglass limb system will not degenerate or take a set under constant pressure, so you can store a fiberglass bow strung. This includes all modern compounds. A wood, bamboo, or hybrid (wood core, fiberglass shell) bow will lose strength if stored strung. They are meant to be strung, shot, and unstrung.

Are recurve bows better?

The advantages of longer bow will be a smoother draw, shallower string angle (less finger pinch) and usually better stability. Longer is always better from a pure shooting perspective PROVIDING you: 1. Your draw length is sufficient to fully work the limbs.

Do recurve bows lose power over time?

Your bow isn't losing power. Like many have said, your strings/cables have prolly move a bit while sitting around. Get them twisted up, or get some new ones and your bow will be fine. Bows don't magically lose power and shoot slower and slower the older they get.
