Most seeds germinate best under dark conditions and might even be inhibited by light (e.g., Phacelia and Allium spp.). However, some species (e.g., Begonia, Primula, Coleus) need light to germinate (Miles and Brown 2007). Don't confuse seed light requirements with what seedlings need. All seedlings require sunlight.

Can seeds germinate without light?

Some seeds don't need light to break through their seed casings and sprout. Most seeds germinate best with controlled amounts of UV generation, but there are seeds that germinate in the absence of light. Furthermore, there are plants that get enough just light in highly shady areas of a garden or even in darkness.

Do seeds need light or heat to germinate?

Most seeds do not need light to germinate, so covering the planted containers, placing them on the heat source, and checking them daily (watering when necessary), can work well for germination. When the seeds begin to germinate, remove them and place them directly under a light source.

Do I need a light to start seeds indoors?

Most veggies need between 6 to 8 hours of direct sun (minimum), so it's important to have a grow light if you are sowing your vegetable seeds indoors in late winter. A grow light will also keep your seedlings from getting too leggy.

Do seeds germinate better in the dark?

Most seeds germinate best under dark conditions and might even be inhibited by light (e.g., Phacelia and Allium spp.). However, some species (e.g., Begonia, Primula, Coleus) need light to germinate (Miles and Brown 2007).

Do Seeds Need Light to Germinate & Grow?

Why do seeds germinate better in the dark?

The light slows stem elongation through hormones that are sent down the stem from the tip of the stem. In the darkness, the hormones do not slow stem elongation. The seeds in the dark-grown condition rely upon the stored chemical energy within their cells (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates) to power their growth.

Can a plant grow without light?

All plants can survive for short periods without light. ... This is an adaptation, called etiolation, which focuses the plant's remaining resources into growing as far as possible to try and reach sunlight again. There are also some plants that have lost the power of photosynthesis altogether.

Should seeds be in direct sunlight?

Keep your seed germination container out of direct sunlight, even if the packet specifies they need sun to germinate. If you need the sunlight, place in indirect light. ... Check your seeds often to see if they have sprouted. Germination time for seeds varies and should be marked on the seed packet.

Do seedlings need darkness?

Yes, it is true that your seedlings need lots of bright light to grow healthy and strong—but they also need a period of darkness in order to thrive. In general, seedlings should receive roughly 14 to 16 hours of light a day when situated in a south-facing window.

Why do seeds grow without light?

Seeds need the right temperature and moisture to germinate. Light isn't necessary for most seeds until leaves start to show. At that point, the embryos have used up the energy stored in the seeds and need light to produce energy through photosynthesis to continue to grow.

Can a plant grow without light Why or why not?

Most plants can grow without sunlight, but all plants require light to undergo photosynthesis. Without natural sunlight, artificial grow lights can provide the specific light wavelengths that plants need to grow. Common low-light plants include: dracaena, snake plant, spider plant, & some ferns.

How long can seedlings go without light?

The length of time a plant can survive without light can be between 4 to 20 day depending on the amount of light the plant is normally subjected to. Low light plants can go from 12 to 20 days, whereas light loving plants can merely last between 4 to 10 days before they die.

What do I do if my seeds don't germinate?

If your seeds don't germinate, simple measures for what to do include making sure to mist your soil instead of pouring water, planting seeds at the recommended depth, controlling pests and fungus, using sterile organic garden soil or growing medium, and avoid using old seeds.

Why won't my seeds germinate?

The primary reasons for failed germination are: Seeds get eaten – mice, voles, birds, and wireworms all eat seeds. Check to see that the seed is still in the soil. Seeds rot – planted too deeply, over-watered, or in cold weather, our untreated seeds may simply rot.

What happens if a plant has no light?

It's a chemical process called photosynthesis and it uses the energy of sunlight to create a form of sugar from water and carbon dioxide. ... Without several hours of light every day, a plant will basically starve to death, regardless of how much water or fertilizer you give it.

What happens if there is no light in photosynthesis?

Without enough light, a plant cannot photosynthesise very quickly - even if there is plenty of water and carbon dioxide and a suitable temperature. Increasing the light intensity increases the rate of photosynthesis, until some other factor - a limiting factor - becomes in short supply.

Do plants need direct sunlight or just daylight?

All plants require sunlight to grow, but differ in the amount and intensity of light needed to prosper. ... Part shade – Plants require between 3 and 6 hours of sun per day, but need protection from intense mid-day sun. Full shade – Plants require less than 3 hours of direct sun per day.

How much light does a germinated seed need?

The most important thing to consider and deliver is adequate plant light. Seedlings need more light than full grown plants, ideally as much as 16-18 hours a day. Additional light may be required for seeds started during the winter months.

Do seedlings need light as soon as they sprout?

Your seeds may not have needed light to germinate, but the seedling will. ... In terms of the amount of lighting, place LED lights 8 to 12 inches above the top of the seedlings and place fluorescents about 5 to 6 inches above the top of the seedlings. Most seedlings require 14 to 16 hours of light per day.

How soon after germination do plants need light?

Once sprouted, most vegetable seedlings and other garden plants require at least 12 hours of good light per day, along with 8 hours of darkness. However, they'll grow the best with around 16 to 18 hours of light. Houseplants are happy with less, where 6 to 12 of light is sufficient (depending on the type of plant).

Can you put seeds straight into soil?

Planting seeds this way is called direct sowing, and it is an easy process that yields great results. Unlike indoor seed starting, direct sowing involves unpredictable elements: weather, wildlife and insects. Even so, many vegetables, annuals, herbs and perennials sprout easily from seed sown directly into garden soil.

Will plants survive indoors without sunlight?

If you're hesitant to grow indoor plants because your home lacks bright sunlight, don't let the shady conditions stop you. Most plants need some light in order to grow, but shade-loving plants can easily get by with indirect light, or even artificial light from regular light bulbs.
