Some protozoa are photosynthetic and can capture the energy of the sun and convert it to usable chemical energy (i.e., autotrophic or phototrophic). Many protozoa are not restricted to a single feeding mechanism and can utilize combinations of the above (i.e., mixotrophic).

Do protozoa contain chlorophyll?

A few protozoa contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which allows them to make their own food. All protozoa reproduce asexually, by dividing into two parts at regular intervals. Some species, however, have evolved the ability to reproduce sexually also.

Do protozoa have chloroplasts?

The term "protozoa" was popular in the 20th century but has now become obsolete. The group includes members of the Kingdom Protista that do not have chloroplasts and therefore have no color. All protozoa were thought to be eukaryotic and unicellular.

Which protozoa has chlorophyll?

Answer: Phytomastigophorea is the protozoa which contains chlorophyll.

Do cyanobacteria have photosynthetic pigments?

The photosynthetic pigments of cyanobacteria include chlorophyll a, β-carotene, zeaxanthin, echinenone, myxoxanthophyll, and other xanthophylls in addition to an array of water soluble chromoproteins, organized in the phycobilisomes.

What are the four photosynthetic pigments?

Chlorophyll a is the most common of the six, present in every plant that performs photosynthesis.
...

• Carotene: an orange pigment.
• Xanthophyll: a yellow pigment.
• Phaeophytin a: a gray-brown pigment.
• Phaeophytin b: a yellow-brown pigment.
• Chlorophyll a: a blue-green pigment.
• Chlorophyll b: a yellow-green pigment.

What are the three main photosynthetic pigments?

The set of wavelengths absorbed by a pigment is its absorption spectrum. In the diagram below, you can see the absorption spectra of three key pigments in photosynthesis: chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and β-carotene.

Which protozoa are photosynthetic?

Note: Euglena is also a protozoa which has chloroplast in it. Even though they depend on the environment for food, they also made their food through photosynthesis. They use flagella for locomotion which are black in color.

Which of these have chlorophyll algae or protozoa?

Chlorophyll is present in which of the following organisms i) Bacteria ii) Virus iii) Algae iv) Protozoa. Cyanobacteria contain chlorophyll while other forms of bacteria contain bacteriochlorophyll.

Is the only protozoan which includes chlorophyll within itself?

phytoflagellate, any member of a group of flagellate protozoans that have many characteristics in common with typical algae. Some contain the pigment chlorophyll and various accessory pigments and have a photosynthetic type of nutrition, although many organisms included in this group exhibit heterotrophy or mixotrophy.

Are protozoa non photosynthetic?

[2] The terms protozoa and protozoans are also used informally to designate single-celled, non-photosynthetic protists, such as ciliates, amoebae and flagellates. ...

Are protozoa eukaryotic or prokaryotic?

Protozoa are single-celled eukaryotes (organisms whose cells have nuclei) that commonly show characteristics usually associated with animals, most notably mobility and heterotrophy. They are often grouped in the kingdom Protista together with the plant-like algae and fungus-like water molds and slime molds.

Are protozoa heterotrophic or autotrophic?

protozoan, organism, usually single-celled and heterotrophic (using organic carbon as a source of energy), belonging to any of the major lineages of protists and, like most protists, typically microscopic. All protozoans are eukaryotes and therefore possess a “true,” or membrane-bound, nucleus.

How do protozoans and algae differ?

The major difference between algae and protozoa is that algae are able to make their own food, as plants do, while protozoa ingest other organisms or organic molecules, as animals do.

Is seaweed a protozoa?

Examples of protozoa include amoebas and paramecia. Plant-like protists are called algae. They include single-celled diatoms and multicellular seaweed. ... Examples of fungus-like protists include slime molds and water molds.

What is the difference between protozoa and Chromista?

The key difference between chromista and protista is that chromista is a biological kingdom comprised of unicellular or multicellular eukaryotic species such as algae, diatoms, oomycetes, and protozoans, while protista is a biological kingdom comprised of unicellular eukaryotic species such as protozoa, protophyta, and ...

Which of following microorganisms have chlorophyll?

Explanation: cyanobacteria and algae have chlorophyll..

Is chlorophyll The only pigment in plants?

The principal pigments responsible are: Chlorophyll is the primary pigment in plants; it is a chlorin that absorbs blue and red wavelengths of light while reflecting a majority of green. ... Kelps, diatoms, and other photosynthetic heterokonts contain chlorophyll c instead of b, while red algae possess only chlorophyll a.

Which microorganisms are bacteria with chlorophyll?

Cyanobacteria are the only bacteria that contain chlorophyll A, a chemical required for oxygenic photosynthesis (the same process used by plants and algae) 1,14. This process uses carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to produce oxygen and glucose (sugars) for energy.

What is an autotrophic protozoan?

An autotrophic protist is a type of single-celled organism that can create its own food. The best-known group is the algae.

Do protozoa have cilia or flagella?

Protozoa are single-celled eukaryotes that share some traits with animals. Protozoa can move by flagella, cilia, or pseudopodia, or they may not move at all.

Are archaebacteria photosynthetic?

Phototrophic archaea use sunlight as a source of energy; however, oxygen–generating photosynthesis does not occur in any archaea.

Which is not a photosynthetic pigment?

Anthocyanin is a purple colour pigment in plants which is responsible for imparting colour to the plant part and does not play any role in photosynthesis.

Which is the photosynthetic pigment?

Photosynthetic pigments are the only pigments that have the ability to absorb energy from sunlight and make it available to the photosynthetic apparatus. In land plants, there are two classes of these photosynthetic pigments, the chlorophylls and the carotenoids.

Where are the photosynthetic pigments located in a chloroplast?

The photosynthetic pigments are located in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast. In higher plants, chloroplast possesses two types of thylakoid- large and small. The large thylakoids are known as stroma thylakoids, extending from one end to the other end of the chloroplast.
