Drusen are typically associated with age-related macular degeneration in people over the age of 60; however they can arise as hereditary degenerations in young people. Drusen are a risk factor for macular degeneration but having drusen does NOT mean you have macular degeneration.

Can drusen be normal?

Having a few hard drusen is normal as you age. Most adults have at least one hard drusen. This type of drusen typically does not cause any problems and doesn't require treatment. Soft drusen, on the other hand, are associated with another common eye condition called age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Can drusen be benign?

When small and few, drusen are generally benign. If the amount or size of these deposits increases, the risk of dry age-related macular degeneration develops. Age-related macular degeneration, AMD, is a leading cause of vision loss.

Can drusen cause distorted vision?

If you have soft drusen, you may have some signs and symptoms of AMD. Over time, untreated AMD may cause blurred or distorted vision, or trouble seeing when you go from bright light to low light. You may also have a blurry or blind spot in the center of your vision.

Can drusen be misdiagnosed?

The diagnosis of ODD is very easy in cases with superficial ODD, but most young children with ODD present with elevated optic discs due to buried drusen. Therefore, children and young adults are particularly vulnerable to misdiagnosis, such as papilledema.

Vision Loss and Macular Degeneration

Can you have macular degeneration without drusen?

No, not necessarily. About 50% of the population will show hard drusen and almost 100% the population above 50 will have at least one druse, but many will not develop macular degeneration. An examination by your doctor will help you better understand your risk and what to do about treatment.

Does having drusen mean you have AMD?

Drusen are the defining feature of macular degeneration. These small yellow or white spots on the retina can be detected by an ophthalmologist during a dilated eye exam or with retinal photography. People with more than a few small drusen are said to have early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

How common is optic nerve drusen?

HOW COMMON ARE OPTIC NERVE DRUSEN? Optic nerve drusen are estimated to occur in about 1-2% of the population. Many cases go undiagnosed because most patients with drusen experience no visual symptoms.

Can optic nerve drusen get worse?

Your doctor can diagnosis this condition either by an ophthalmoscopic examination or with the aid of ultrasound or computer tomography (CT) scanning. Will the drusen get worse? The number and size of the optic disc drusen tend to increase over time.

What foods should be avoided with macular degeneration?

• Processed foods that contain trans fats.
• Tropical oils, like palm oil (use vitamin E–rich safflower and corn oil instead)
• Lard and vegetable shortening, and margarine.
• High-fat dairy foods (eggs in moderation are a good source of eye-healthy nutrients)
• Fatty beef, pork and lamb.

What does drusen look like on Oct?

Drusen is the earliest AMD sign that is detected clinically in fundus examinations. On OCT, drusen appear as RPE deformation or thickening that may form irregularities and undulations (Figure 2).

Is drusen a cholesterol?

An eye care professional can detect AMD prior to vision loss by looking for drusen, which are yellow deposits under the retina that contain cholesterol and other debris. Although small drusen are a normal part of aging, larger drusen typically indicate AMD.

Can optic nerve drusen go away?

Most cases of subretinal neovascularization associated with optic disc drusen resolve without treatment and with only mild symptoms. Laser photocoagulation should only be considered in cases if central visual acuity is threatened.

What is the difference between drusen and exudates?

Exudates are caused by leaking fatty deposits from blood vessels and appear in compact groups, whereas drusen are believed to be a result of a reduced capacity of the retina to cleanse waste products from the photoreceptors and can appear over the whole retina.

Do floaters have anything to do with macular degeneration?

Are floaters related to macular degeneration? Most ophthalmologists do not find floaters to be related to AMD.

Can drusen cause headaches?

Conclusions: Our study suggests that a majority of patients with optic disc drusen have non-specific symptoms such as visual obscurations, visual field defects and headaches despite maintaining good visual acuity. Most of the optic discs appeared abnormal, but visible drusen were observed in less than half.

Are you born with drusen?

Drusen occur in about 1% of people, more commonly in caucasians. They are typically not present at birth. They become visible to eye doctors usually in the teens, and may become more prominent with age.

How do you treat optic nerve drusen?

Optic disc drusen does not require treatment, and patients generally have good visual prognosis. There is currently no effective treatment for patients who have gradual loss of visual fields (some studies have suggested IOP lowering medications).

Can you get Lasik with drusen?

To date, there has not been a reported case of a patient with optic nerve drusen who has undergone LASIK with or without visual loss. We report two patients with optic nerve drusen who, after informed consent, decided to proceed with LASIK. Both patients had excellent outcomes without visual loss.

What causes optic eye drusen?

Optic nerve drusen are abnormal collections of proteins and calcium salts which accumulate in the optic nerve. This can be mistaken for swelling of the optic nerve. The cause is unknown, in some cases this is inherited, while in others it occurs without family history.

Can optic nerve drusen cause glaucoma?

Complicating the determination of what caused the damage, many changes seen in glaucomatous eyes can also be observed in nerves with optic drusen. Occasionally, neovascularization or hemorrhages may appear in the optic disc and extend into the peripapillary region, just as they may in glaucoma.

Can a swollen optic nerve be nothing?

It's possible for the optic nerve to be inflamed without affecting vision. A careful, medical evaluation of the eye can generally pinpoint optic neuritis even if you don't have symptoms.

Is AMD an autoimmune disease?

Kuttner-Kondo; AMD Is an Autoimmune Disorder in Which Amplification of Complement Activation Triggered by Anti-CEP Autoantibodies Occurs as a Result of Diminished Factor H Function.

Is drusen genetic?

Doyne honeycomb macular disease, or dominant drusen, is the result of mutations in the EFEMP1 gene at 2p16 in the majority of cases. It is an autosomal dominant disorder.

What is dominant drusen?

Dominant drusen is an inherited autosomal-dominant condition that presents with small, round, yellowish- white multiple retinal drusen. They form into a honeycomb pattern in the area of the macula and nasal to the optic disc.
