Unfortunately, no. There would be no popping sound in this space-balloon experiment, as sound waves require a medium to move through. ... In space, the air molecules would still expand outward, but without any air in a vacuum, there is no “sound barrier” to break, per se, so it would be a completely silent pop.

What happens to balloons in the sky?

One is that atmospheric pressure is dramatically reduced at high altitudes, so a helium balloon expands as it rises and eventually explodes. If you inflate a balloon beyond its limits at room temperature, it will break into small pieces up to about ten centimetres long.

Is letting go of balloons illegal?

(a) No person or group shall release, outdoors, balloons made of electrically conductive material and filled with a gas lighter than air, as part of a public or civic event, promotional activity, or product advertisement.

Why are balloon releases bad?

Dr. “So sometimes the wildlife, the birds, the turtles, they ingest the balloons thinking it's something to eat and it gets stuck in their throat and it gets blocked into their digestive system. ...

How do you poop in space?

Today, astronauts at the International Space Station go to the bathroom into a little plate-sized toilet hole, and a fan vacuum sucks their excrement away and a separate funnel equipped with a fan suction their pee away.

What would happen if you filled a balloon on earth and brought it to the moon?

For any balloon to stay aloft in... A helium balloon on the moon might as well be made of lead. For any balloon to stay aloft in any atmosphere, the gas inside it must be lighter than the surrounding air. ... Unable to escape even lunar gravity, which is one sixth that of Earth's, the balloon would plunge to the ground.

Will a balloon fly on Mars?

In order to fly balloons at Mars, the balloons must be made of very lightweight material. ... One simple type is a helium balloon that carries a rope-like snake. During the day, the balloon would be heated by the sun and rise to some altitude above the Martian surface.

Would a balloon work in no atmosphere?

As long as the balloon's interior density is lower than the ambient density, it should rise—no matter how low the ambient pressure is. ... The balloon walls would become extremely thin and porous, but because of the scaling of area and volume, they should always remain able to confine the gas.

Would a helium balloon float on the moon?

On the moon, there is no air. ... Since there is no surrounding air, there is nothing for the helium to float above. There's nothing to push it up. Therefore, no matter how much helium is inside that balloon, it will drop and settle in the lunar dust.

Would a helium balloon float on Venus?

Each helium-filled balloon would fly about 56 kilometers (about 35 miles) above Venus' oven-hot surface, in temperatures about the same as a spring afternoon in Los Angeles. It would take about four days for the helium superpressure balloons to fly completely around the planet.

What do balloons do in space?

The air molecules inside the balloon would be moving at roughly the speed of sound, or slightly faster. Once the balloon explodes, those molecules would move at a slightly lower velocity and continue into the vacuum of space until they bump into another molecule that slows or diverts its path.

What do helium balloons do in space?

In space, well, there's no air. There's obviously no buoyant force. The balloon only feels the gravitational force. Since the gravitational force generates the same acceleration on all objects (including you) then you fall along with the balloon and so it just stays there.

How do balloons escape gravity?

Helium balloons are pulled by gravity, as are all objects with mass. The reason they don't fall is that there is another force acting on them, a buoyant force from air pressure that is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the balloon.

Can you fart in space?

Air is lighter than solids and liquids, which is why it rises in your stomach and you can easily burp up gas on Earth. The lack of gravity in space means the air in astronauts' stomachs doesn't separate from ingested food, so burping could expel more than just gas.

Is it hard to sleep in space?

In space, sleeping on the floor is just as comfortable as sleeping on the wall: there is no difference in the weightless environment. However, since astronauts are used to sleeping on a mattress on Earth, their sleeping bag has a rigid cushion, to exert pressure on their back.

How do female astronauts menstruate in space?

A combined oral contraceptive, or the pill, used continuously (without taking a week off to induce menstrual flow) is currently the best and safest choice for astronauts who prefer not to menstruate during missions, says Varsha Jain, a gynecologist and visiting professor at King's College London.

How high up is space?

A common definition of space is known as the Kármán Line, an imaginary boundary 100 kilometers (62 miles) above mean sea level. In theory, once this 100 km line is crossed, the atmosphere becomes too thin to provide enough lift for conventional aircraft to maintain flight.

How far can balloons travel?

Moving at just three miles-per-hour, a helium-filled Mylar® balloon can travel more than 1,000 miles before it returns to Earth. That means a balloon released in St. Louis could realistically reach the Atlantic Ocean before descending.

What is the line between Earth and space?

The Kármán line is the altitude where space begins. It is 100 km (about 62 miles) high. It commonly represents the border between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space.

What did Venera 7 discover?

So what did Venera 7 say from the surface of Venus? The probe was able to send data on the temperature of Venus (a mind-boggling 887 degrees Fahrenheit or 475 degrees Celsius), the atmospheric pressure (92 bar) and a wind speed of 2.5 meters per second (nearly 5.6 mph or 9 km/h).

Which planet is known as balloon of gases?

EarthSky | Exoplanet's helium atmosphere is inflated like a balloon.

Can we get helium from space?

Helium is abundant in space, where it's produced as a product of the fusion reaction inside stars such as the sun.
