If your flashers begin to blink quickly or erratically, there's a good chance the relay is going bad and it should be tested. Testing the flasher relay is a straightforward task that should take you about 15 minutes.

How do I know if my flasher relay is bad?

Usually a bad or failing flasher relay will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential issue.
...
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Hazard / Turn Signal Flasher

1. Turn signals or hazards do not function. ...
2. Turn signals or hazards stay on. ...
3. Additional lights are not working.

Is there a way to test a turn signal flasher?

Testing the flasher unit

To test the conventional type of flasher unit, use a circuit tester between the terminal marked B on the unit and the earth. Turn on the ignition . If the supply side of the unit is working, the bulb should light. If it does not, look for a break in the wiring between the unit and the fuse box.

How do you test a 2 pin flasher relay?

Registered. If they are 2 prong, hook one prong to +12v, hook the other prong to the + side of a test light, then ground the ground wire from the light, it should start flashing. Basically, the flasher is wired in series in the positive wire to the lights. It won't cycle without being under a load.

How do you test a 3 prong flasher relay?

1. Identify the terminals. ...
2. Clip the test light lead between the "P" terminal and the negative terminal of the battery.
3. Connect the "B" terminal to the positive terminal of the battery using the test wire with equal-length stripped ends, with one clip on each end.

How to check your flasher relay

How do you test a signal with a multimeter?

1. Set your multimeter: Begin by turning the dial on your multimeter to the "ohms" setting.
2. Test your multimeter: Touch the two probes of your multimeter together. ...
3. Connect the pins: The multimeter will have two small test probes, which you can touch to the light bulb to get a reading.

How do you tell if a relay is bad with a multimeter?

The only tool required to check a relay is a multimeter. With the relay removed from the fuse box, the multimeter set to measure DC voltage and the switch in the cab activated, first check to see if there are 12 volts at the 85 position in the fuse box where the relay plugs in (or wherever the relay is located).

What causes a flasher relay to go bad?

The main cause of this problem is electrical issues with your turn signal relay. You should inspect your electrical system if you notice that your light won't turn off. It could be a simple fix, but you first have to determine where the problem is coming from.

How do you check a motorcycle flasher unit?

You can test it by connecting it to a battery and then directly thru a bulb or two bulbs wired in parallel, to give you the correct current flow thru the flasher. When you complete the circuit, the flasher should work and the lights should flash.

How do you test a turn signal wire?

Turn the ignition switch to the On position but do not start the engine. Operate the turn signal switch in either direction (left or right). Back probe the power wire that connects to the flasher unit. The test light should illuminate.

How does a 3 pin flasher relay work?

The relay is the electromechanical device that makes the operator switch-selections happen. Typically, a switch is engaged, which energizes the electromagnet in the relay. This electromagnet closes contacts that power the flasher and lighting circuit. Left, right or both sides can be selected.

Are turn signal flashers universal?

Universal Flasher Unit 9-30 V

The electronic Universal Flasher Unit is used for turn signal and hazard warning light applications. The flasher unit can be used in various vehicle types. Versions with indicator LED (additional function indication) or start/stop feature are available.

How many ohms should a relay have?

Anywhere from 50-120 ohms is OK. Out of range or open means a bad electromagnet coil winding and time for a new relay. Leave the multimeter on ohms or continuity.

Why relay testing is required?

Why is protection relay testing important? Due to the critical nature of protection relays, testing during the commissioning stage is crucial for confidence in the operational safety of an electrical system. Additionally, testing on a regular basis is necessary to ensure correct operation is maintained.
