At the other extreme, heterotopia can result in severe seizure disorder, loss of motor skills, and mental retardation. Fatalities are practically unknown, other than the death of unborn male fetuses with a specific genetic defect.

Is gray matter heterotopia dangerous?

Developmental, cognitive and motor impairments can occur, and are more severe in those with bilateral or extensive heterotopia or other brain abnormalities. Seizures are common, seen in 80-90% of cases.

Can heterotopia cause seizures?

Periventricular heterotopia is a condition in which the nerve cells (neurons) do not migrate properly during early development of the fetal brain. People with this condition typically develop recurrent seizures ( epilepsy ) beginning in mid-adolescence.

Can heterotopia be cured?

Although there is no cure for X-linked periventricular heterotopia, there may be ways to manage the signs and symptoms in each individual. Seizures are typically treated with antiepileptic medications.

How common is heterotopia?

Periventricular heterotopia is a rare condition. Its incidence is unknown.

Gray matter heterotopia - Wikipedia Article Audio

Is gray matter heterotopia genetic?

Subcortical Band Heterotopia

SBH cortical malformations always have a genetic origin, and abnormalities in the DCX and LIS1 genes account for the majority of the SBH cases.

Is GREY matter Heterotopia genetic?

Grey matter heterotopias are believed to be due interruption of the normal migration of neurons from the periventricular telencephalic germinal matrix to the cortex and may be due to either genetic abnormalities or infection/trauma.

Is heterotopia a genetic disorder?

X-linked periventricular heterotopia or FLNA-related periventricular nodular heterotopia is a genetic disorder in which nerve cells in the brain do not migrate properly during early fetal development (a neuronal migration disorder). It is characterized by the presence of clumps of neurons near the brain's ventricles.

Is PVNH genetic?

Is PVNH inherited? PVNH can be inherited from an affected parent or can be seen de novo, meaning that the genetic change is occurring for the first time in the affected person and is not present in either parent. The genetic abnormality involves genes that are responsible for regulating the migration of nerve cells.

What causes a smooth brain?

ɛnˈsɛf. əl. i/, meaning "smooth brain") is a set of rare brain disorders where the whole or parts of the surface of the brain appear smooth. It is caused by defective neuronal migration during the 12th to 24th weeks of gestation resulting in a lack of development of brain folds (gyri) and grooves (sulci).

What is a neuronal Heterotopia?

Neuronal heterotopia refers to brain malformations resulting from deficits of neuronal migration. Individuals with heterotopias show a high incidence of neurological deficits, such as epilepsy.

What causes Polymicrogyria?

There are several known causes for polymicrogyria. The most common of which results from the virus cytomegalovirus (CMV). Other causes include various prenatal infections, brain abnormalities, genetic disorders, and more. This condition may also result from brain injury while a baby is still in the womb.

Are partial seizures epilepsy?

A simple partial seizure is a type of seizure associated with epilepsy. It may also be referred to as a focal seizure. Epilepsy is a condition that causes multiple seizures, and the seizures can be of any type. A simple partial seizure will affect only one area of your brain.

Can GREY matter Heterotopia cause headaches?

Epilepsy in periventricular nodular heterotopia is common but headache is rare [3] . Asymmetric ventricu- lomegaly is a common radiological feature and is thought to be a structural consequence of the presence of hetero- topia, rather than a disorder of ependymal compliance or CSF dynamics [4] .

Does grey matter regenerate?

Damage essentially cuts off or limits communication between areas of grey matter (neuron cell bodies and dendrites, the neuropil, glial cells, and capillaries). ... As long as the neuron cell bodies remain healthy, axons can regrow and slowly repair themselves.

What happens when gray matter is damaged?

Since the neuronal cells of the grey matter are constantly working, they require a high supply of oxygen to function efficiently. Therefore when the grey matter does not have access to oxygen, the cells will begin to die, leading to possible irreversible brain damage and loss of function.

How common is PVNH?

The incidence of PVNH is unknown because some people may not show symptoms. It is estimated that about 50% of occurences are genetically linked to the X-chromosome however, as genetic diagnoses evolve, this can vary. The other 50% are thought to be spontaneous mutations.

What can cause focal seizures?

• epilepsy.
• liver or kidney failure.
• very high blood pressure.
• use of illegal drugs.
• brain infections, such as meningitis.
• brain and head injuries.
• congenital brain defects, which are brain defects that occur before birth.
• stroke.

What is Pachygyria syndrome?

Pachygyria is a developmental condition due to abnormal migration of nerve cells (neurons) in the developing brain and nervous system.[1568] With pachygyria, there are few gyri (the ridges between the wrinkles in the brain), and they are usually broad and flat.

What causes nodular heterotopia?

Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PNH) is a brain malformation, due to abnormal neuronal migration, in which a subset of neurons fails to migrate into the developing cerebral cortex and remains as nodules that line the ventricular surface.

What is heterotopia medical?

Heterotopia is defined as a cluster of normal neurons in abnormal locations, and is divided into three main groups: periventricular nodular heterotopia, subcortical heterotopia, and band or laminar heterotopia.

What is subcortical heterotopia?

Subcortical band heterotopia is a condition in which nerve cells (neurons) do not move (migrate) to their proper locations in the fetal brain during early development.

What is a heterotopia Foucault?

Heterotopia is a concept elaborated by philosopher Michel Foucault to describe certain cultural, institutional and discursive spaces that are somehow 'other': disturbing, intense, incompatible, contradictory or transforming.

What is subependymal GREY matter Heterotopia?

Subependymal grey matter heterotopia, also known as periventricular heterotopia, is the most common form of grey matter heterotopia and is characterised by nodules of grey matter located immediately beneath the ependyma of the lateral ventricles. It can be divided according to morphology into ²: unilateral focal.

What are focal seizures?

Focal epilepsies are characterized by seizures arising from a specific part (lobe) of the brain. Focal epilepsies include idiopathic location-related epilepsies (ILRE), frontal lobe epilepsy, temporal lobe epilepsy, parietal lobe epilepsy and occipital lobe epilepsy.
