In the middle ear sits the tensor tympani, and it seems most people are unable to contract it voluntarily. Those that can contract their tensor tympani - a small muscle located above the auditory tube - are privy to a special skill: the action produces a low, thunder-like rumbling in their ears.

Can you control your tensor tympani muscle?

Conclusion: The importance of the tensor tympani muscle in middle-ear physiology remains unclear. It has been related to the attenuation of sounds produced during the mastication process. Voluntary control over the tensor tympani muscle is an extremely rare event.

What happens when the tensor tympani contracts?

Contraction of the tensor tympani muscle pulls the tympanic membrane medially and rostrally, placing greater tension on the auditory ossicle chain, which results in an increased resonant frequency of the auditory sound conduction system.

Why can I make a roaring noise in my head on command?

If not, you probably know someone who can do a weird thing with some part of their body. Well, apparently there are some people who can produce a low, thunder-like rumble in their ears on command. This is done by contracting their tensor tympani – a small muscle located above the auditory tube in their ear.

Is voluntary ear rumbling rare?

Rumbling is a surprisingly common one. It's often due to a protective effect that keeps sounds happening inside your body from being too loud to your ears. However, there are some medical conditions (usually treatable) that cause rumbling too.

What is tonic tensor tympani syndrome?

Tonic tensor tympani syndrome (TTTS) is an involuntary, anxiety-based condition where the reflex threshold for tensor tympani muscle activity is reduced, causing a frequent spasm. This can trigger aural symptoms from tympanic membrane tension, middle ear ventilation alterations and trigeminal nerve irritability.

Can you vibrate your eardrums?

In the middle ear sits the tensor tympani, and it seems most people are unable to contract it voluntarily. Those that can contract their tensor tympani - a small muscle located above the auditory tube - are privy to a special skill: the action produces a low, thunder-like rumbling in their ears.

What causes tensor tympani spasm?

Tonic tensor tympani syndrome (TTTS) has been described to cause TT spasms leading to tinnitus and hyperacusis. TTTS is believed to be an involuntary condition due to an overlying anxiety disorder, which causes a reduction in the threshold required to trigger the TT muscle reflex.

What does tensor tympani sound like?

The vibration can be witnessed and felt by highly tensing one's muscles, as when making a firm fist. The sound can be heard by pressing a highly tensed muscle against the ear, again a firm fist is a good example. The sound is usually described as a rumbling sound.

Do I have tonic tensor tympani syndrome?

Symptoms consistent with TTTS can include: tinnitus; rhythmic aural sensations such as clicks and tympanic membrane flutter; alterations in ventilation of the middle ear cavity leading to a sense of aural blockage or fullness, a frequent aural "popping" sensation and mild vertigo;^, minor alterations in middle ear ...

Why can I pop my ears on command?

ET tubes are the reason your ears “pop” on airplanes and in elevators. That feeling comes from when there's a buildup of pressure in your middle ear, causing your Eustachian tubes to suddenly open. When they open, the pressure equalizes, and your ear drums move—exactly what you're feeling.

What is the function of the tensor tympani?

The tensor tympani muscle is attached to the malleus. Its role in the acoustic reflex is to pull the malleus away from the eardrum.

Can you control your eustachian tube?

You can do exercises to open up the tubes. This includes swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum. You can help relieve the “full ear” feeling by taking a deep breath, pinching your nostrils closed, and “blowing” with your mouth shut. If you think your baby may have Eustachian tube dysfunction, feed him or her.

The simplest reason for crackling noises in your ears is earwax. Too much earwax buildup in your ear canal may make “crackling” noises as you move your jaw. This may happen naturally. It can also be caused by using cotton swabs to clean your ear.

Why can I hear bubbling in my ear?

The bottom line. Sometimes you may experience crackling or popping in your ears. This is often described as a “Rice Krispie”-like sound. Crackling in the ears can be caused by several different conditions, such as eustachian tube dysfunction, acute otitis media, or the buildup of earwax.

How come when I yawn my ears growl?

There are little muscles in the ear that contract in order to decrease the internal volume of some natural actions such as your own voice or yawning or chewing, It's the tightening of these muscles in reaction to these natural sounds that we hear as rumbling.

A rumbling sound in the ears could be described as air passing through the ear that muffles your hearing. Rumbling can be your body's response in preparation for loud noises. It's caused by a small muscle located in the middle ear called the tensor tympani (TT).

Will eardrum spasms go away?

Symptoms may resolve after a few days . Swallowing, yawning, chewing, and forced exhalation can all help equalize pressure across the middle ear and resolve the symptoms. Sometimes, however, these symptoms may persist, and a person may wish to seek medical treatment.

What is acoustic shock syndrome?

Acoustic shock is a recently recognised clinical entity: following an abrupt, intense and unanticipated acoustic stimulus, usually delivered by a telephone handset or headset, some individuals report a symptom cluster that includes otalgia, altered hearing, aural fullness, imbalance, tinnitus, dislike or even fear of ...

How do I stop whooshing in my ear?

Your doctor may recommend using a noise-suppressing device, such as a white noise machine or a wearable sound generator. The sound of an air conditioner or fan may also help, particularly at bedtime.

What is the Stapedius muscle?

Stapedius muscle is termed to be the smallest skeletal muscle in human body, which has a major role in otology. Stapedius muscle is one of the intratympanic muscles for the regulation of sound.

What are Barotraumas?

Barotrauma means injury to your body because of changes in barometric (air) or water pressure. One common type happens to your ear. A change in altitude may cause your ears to hurt. This can happen if you are flying in an airplane, driving in the mountains, or scuba diving.
