The vertebrate ear combines two main functions: balance and hearing. The vestibular part of the inner ear is the organ of equilibrium detecting head and body movements during locomotion (e.g., swimming, running, and flying).

What is vertebrate hearing?

In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: mechanical waves, known as vibrations, are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain (primarily in the temporal lobe).

Do all vertebrates have an inner ear?

A series of molecular biological experiments was able to clarify the issue. Analyzing the regulatory genes that control the development of the semicircular canals showed that the basic pattern of inner ear development is similar for all vertebrates, including lampreys and hagfish.

Do amphibians have ears?

Amphibians do not have an external ear (or pinna) such as seen in mam- mals. Airborne sounds enter the ear via the middle-ear apparatus, which begins with the tympanum. ... From the lateral-most chamber of the periotic space, the cistern, sound travels through the inner ear by two separate pathways.

Do all land mammals have ears?

Both modern land mammals, including humans, and marine mammals evolved from ancestors that had air-adapted ears. So, many of the structures of the ear in both land and marine mammals are similar. ... The basics of hearing are the same in both land and marine mammals.

This Ancient Mammal's Ears Were Built for Chewing

Which animal have no ears?

Some animals like birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians do not have an external ear. These animals have funnel-shaped ears which help in processing the sound but lack external ears. So, we can say that birds, crocodiles, snakes, lizards do not have external ears.

Do turtles have ears?

Turtles don't have ears, but they're not deaf. Thin flaps of skin cover internal ear bones, which receive vibrations and low-frequency sounds.

Where are fish ears?

Fish don't have ears that we can see, but they do have ear parts inside their heads. They pick up sounds in the water through their bodies and in their internal ear, according to the National Wildlife Federation.

Where are ducks ears?

Waterfowl ears lack external appendages and are located slightly behind and below the eyes. The ear openings are covered with soft feathers, called auriculars, which offer protection and help muffle the sound of the wind when the birds are in flight.

Are reptiles external ears?

Some reptiles, like snakes have no visible ears at all, whereas others have much simpler designs when compared to those that stick out on most mammals. Some reptiles, notably snakes, don't have ears at all.

Do lampreys have ears?

In jawed (gnathostome) vertebrates, the inner ears have three semicircular canals arranged orthogonally in the three Cartesian planes: one horizontal (lateral) and two vertical canals. ... The present study reveals a novel observation: the lamprey has two horizontal semicircular ducts in each labyrinth.

What is the tympanic membrane of the ear?

The tympanic membrane is also called the eardrum. It separates the outer ear from the middle ear. When sound waves reach the tympanic membrane they cause it to vibrate. The vibrations are then transferred to the tiny bones in the middle ear.

How do ears perceive sound?

The vibrations move through the fluid in the cochlea in the inner ear, stimulating thousands of tiny hair cells. This results in the transformation of the vibrations into electrical impulses, which are finally perceived by the brain as sound.

What are the structural mechanisms of the vertebrate ear?

The inner ear (labyrinth) of vertebrates comprises two main functions: (a) balancing of the individual using the ampullae of the three SCs and the sensory field of utriculus and sacculus, and (b) hearing ability with the sensory hair cells of basilar papilla of the lagena of nonmammalian amniotes (the homologous ...

What are the example of sense of hearing?

Food and drink also make sounds we can hear. Knock on a melon, for example, to hear a hollow sound that is a sign of its freshness. Or have you ever noticed how it sounds when you bite into a crunchy apple? You can also, for example, hear your crisp bread cracking while you eat it.

Do penguins have ears?

Like other birds, penguin ears lack external ear flaps . The ears reside on either side of the head as holes covered by feathers.

Where are chickens ears?

Chickens do have ears although they are hidden by the feathers on the side of the head. But when the feathers are pushed aside, the openings that serve as ears appear. There is no outer ear, such as we humans have, but chickens do have earlobes which can be clearly seen.

Where is an owl's ears?

They help with camouflage and communication with other owls but not with hearing. Their ears are actually on the sides of their head, just like yours! The ears are covered and protected by feathers and some owls even have flaps to protect the ears.

Do all animals have ears?

So while many animals have ears, even those that don't, have other features that allow them to detect sound. Animals use ears and other sensory organs to detect sound.

Do dolphins have ears?

The dolphin has an amazing setup for hearing. Like all mammals, it has ears, including middle and inner ear canals. ... The dolphin's jawbone also has sound receptors that conduct sound vibrations to the middle ear. Dolphins have great eyesight above and below the water, but it only works for about 150 feet.

What are fish ears called?

Fishes have structures in the inner ear, called otoliths, which are much denser than water and a fish's body. Otoliths are made of calcium carbonate and their size and shape is highly variable among species.

Do sea turtle have ears?

Sea turtle ears are much smaller than ours and though not visible on the outside of their head, their ears allow them to hear vibrations in the water. Their ears are covered by a protective layer of skin called the tympanum.

Do whales have ears?

As a group, whales therefore have two important aspects for auditory investigations: 1) They have the only mammalian ears fully adapted to underwater hearing, and 2) they employ the broadest acoustic range of any known mammal group.

Does a fish have ears?

Fish hear, but their "ears" are on the inside. Bony fishes detect vibrations through their "earstones" called otoliths. Both people and fish use parts of their ears to help them with balance.
