Rapid antigen tests aren't perfect. False positives — meaning your test is positive but you're not actually infected — are possible with antigen tests, although less likely if you're symptomatic. "What's more concerning than a false positive, though, is a false negative.

Can COVID-19 antigen tests be false positive?

Despite the high specificity of antigen tests, false positive results will occur, especially when used in communities where the prevalence of infection is low – a circumstance that is true for all in vitro diagnostic tests.

What are consequences of a false negative COVID-19 test?

Risks to a patient of a false negative test result include: delayed or lack of supportive treatment, lack of monitoring of infected individuals and their household or other close contacts for symptoms resulting in increased risk of spread of COVID-19 within the community, or other unintended adverse events.

What to do if you test positive for COVID-19 on a home test?

If your COVID-19 test is positive, tell a healthcare provider about your positive result and stay in contact with them during your illness. To avoid spreading the virus to others, follow CDC's guidance for isolation.

Are COVID-19 molecular tests more accurate than antigen tests?

Molecular tests are generally more accurate and mostly processed in a laboratory, which takes longer; antigen tests—which are sometimes referred to as 'rapid tests'—are processed pretty much anywhere, including in doctor's office, pharmacies, or even at home.

At Home Rapid COVID 19 Tests and False Positives (Coronavirus Antigen Tests)

How accurate are rapid COVID-19 antigen tests?

Rapid antigen tests are very specific for the coronavirus. A positive result likely means that you are infected. However, rapid antigen tests are not as sensitive as other tests, so there is a higher chance of a false negative result.

When are antigen tests the better option to screen for COVID-19?

The clinical performance of diagnostic tests largely depends on the circumstances in which they are used. Both antigen tests and NAATs perform best if the person is tested when their viral load is generally highest. Because antigen tests perform best in symptomatic people and within a certain number of days since symptom onset, antigen tests are used frequently on people who are symptomatic. Antigen tests also may be informative in diagnostic testing situations in which the person has a known exposure to a person with COVID-19.

How long can you spread COVID-19 after testing positive?

People with COVID-19 can spread the virus to other people for 10 days after they develop symptoms, or 10 days from the date of their positive test if they do not have symptoms. The person with COVID-19 and all members of the household should wear a well-fitted mask and consistently, inside the home.

How long should I stay in quarantine after exposure to COVID-19?

Quarantine means staying home for 14 days after you are exposed to someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. This is because you can be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 but may not show symptoms for up to 14 days. Even though you may not show symptoms, you can still spread the virus.

Am I infectious if I have a positive COVID-19 test result?

These people who have a positive test result should be considered infectious and remain isolated until they again meet criteria for discontinuation of isolation or of transmission-based precautions. Contact tracing during the person's second episode of symptoms is warranted.

Can the COVID-19 molecular test give false negatives?

Molecular tests are typically highly sensitive for the detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, all diagnostic tests may be subject to false negative results, and the risk of false negative results may increase when testing patients with genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2.

What does a negative COVID-19 antigen test result mean in asymptomatic persons?

Negative test results using a viral test (NAAT or antigen) in asymptomatic persons with recent known or suspected exposure suggest no current evidence of infection. These results represent a snapshot of the time around specimen collection and could change if tested again in one or more days.

Is the PCR test for COVID-19 accurate?

PCR tests remain the gold standard for detecting an active COVID-19 infection. The tests have accurately detected COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began. Highly trained clinical professionals are skilled at correctly interpreting PCR test results and notices like this one from the WHO.

What should be done if the COVID-19 antigen test result is positive?

In a community setting, when testing a person who has symptoms compatible with COVID-19, the healthcare provider generally can interpret a positive antigen test to indicate that the person is infected with SARS-CoV-2; this person should follow CDC's guidance for isolation. However, if the person who has received a positive antigen test result is fully vaccinated, the healthcare provider should inform the public health authorities. Ideally, a separate specimen would be collected and sent to a laboratory for viral sequencing for public health purposes.

What is a false positive COVID-19 antibody test?

Sometimes a person can test positive for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies when they do not actually have those specific antibodies. This is called a false positive.

Who should get a COVID-19 antigen test?

Those who are not fully vaccinated and have not had COVID-19 in the last 3 months should consider serial antigen testing if they have had contact with a person who has COVID-19 within the last 14 days. Serial antigen testing should be performed every 3–7 days for 14 days.

Should I get tested for COVID-19 if I was in close contact with a positive case?

•Viral testing is recommended for close contacts of persons with COVID-19.

What steps should I take after being exposed to COVID-19?

● Stay home for 14 days after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.
● Watch for fever (100.4◦F), cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19
● If possible, stay away from others, especially people who are at higher risk for getting very sick from COVID-19

How long does it take for symptoms of COVID-19 to appear after exposure?

Symptoms may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure to the virus.

When is someone with COVID-19 infectious?

The onset and duration of viral shedding and the period of infectiousness for COVID-19 are not yet known with certainty. Based on current evidence, scientists believe that persons with mild to moderate COVID-19 may shed replication-competent SARS-CoV-2 for up to 10 days following symptom onset, while a small fraction of persons with severe COVID-19, including immunocompromised persons, may shed replication-competent virus for up to 20 days. It is possible that SARS-CoV-2 RNA may be detectable in the upper or lower respiratory tract for weeks after illness onset, similar to infections with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV. However, detection of viral RNA does not necessarily mean that infectious virus is present. Based on existing literature, the incubation period (the time from exposure to development of symptoms) of SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses (e.g., MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV) ranges from 2–14 days.

When should you do a confirmatory test for COVID-19?

Confirmatory testing should take place as soon as possible after the antigen test, and not longer than 48 hours after the initial antigen testing.

What is the COVID-19 antibody test?

An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery. Because of this, antibody tests should not be used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection. At this time, researchers do not know if the presence of antibodies means that you are immune to the coronavirus in the future.

What is the difference between the types of tests available for COVID-19?

There are two different types of tests – diagnostic tests and antibody tests. A diagnostic test can show if you have an active coronavirus infection and should take steps to quarantine or isolate yourself from others.

Currently there are two types of diagnostic tests – molecular (RT-PCR) tests that detect the virus's genetic material, and antigen tests that detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus. Samples are typically collected with a nasal or throat swab, or saliva collected by spitting into a tube.

An antibody test looks for antibodies that are made by the immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibodies can help fight infections. Antibodies can take several days or weeks to develop after you have an infection and may stay in your blood for several weeks after recovery.

What is the Innova COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test?

The Innova Medical Group SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test claimed to determine if a person had an active COVID-19 infection. The test uses a nasal swab sample and test strip to detect specific proteins, called antigens, from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. If the nasal sample had SARS-CoV-2 antigens, a colored test line should have appeared on the test strip indicating a person may have COVID-19. If the nasal sample did not have SARS-CoV-2 antigens, a colored line should not have appeared on the test strip. The test has not been authorized, cleared, or approved by the FDA.

Is the Innova COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public to stop using the Innova Medical Group SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test for diagnostic use. The FDA has significant concerns that the performance of the test has not been adequately established, presenting a risk to health.
