A: The upstream sensor threads into the pipe coming from the engine, closer to the front of the car, and the downstream sensor threads into the catalytic converter, more toward the rear of the vehicle. They are not interchangeable.

Is upstream and downstream O2 sensors the same?

The upstream oxygen sensor is situated before the catalytic converter whereas the downstream oxygen sensor is located after the catalytic converter. The upstream sensor monitors the level of pollutants in the engine's exhaust and sends this information to the ECU that continuously adjusts the air-fuel ratio.

What happens if you use the wrong O2 sensor?

If your vehicle has a bad oxygen sensor, it could run irregularly or sound rough when it idles. A faulty oxygen sensor can impact your engine's timing, combustion intervals, and other essential functions. You could also notice stalling or slow acceleration.

Does downstream O2 sensor affect performance?

2. That O2 sensor is bad. Like others have said, a bad downstream O2 will not have any effects on performance/MPGs, but you are right that a bad catalytic converter may.

Can I drive without downstream O2 sensor?

yes. The rear O2 sensors are emissions related only. You will have an error light but it won't harm anything. If you happen to need to get an emission test, you will fail..

O2 Sensors is it Upstream or Downstream?

Can a bad downstream oxygen sensor cause a rough idle?

Symptoms of a Bad Oxygen Sensor

Sensors simply report information. ... The downstream or diagnostic sensors only monitor the exhaust leaving the catalytic converter and will not cause such an issue. Other symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor include a rough idle, a misfire, and/ or hesitation when trying to accelerate.

Which O2 sensor goes bad first upstream or downstream?

The main o2 sensors go bad first from the crap that flows & burns through them (Gas).

How do you bypass an O2 sensor?

1. Raise your vehicle onto jack stands. ...
2. Place jack stands underneath the front pinch welds located underneath the front doors (underneath the vehicle) and lower the vehicle onto the stands.
3. Remove the electrical plug from the O2 sensors underneath the vehicle.

Can a bad O2 sensor cause a car to run rich?

When the sensor goes bad, your car may lose up to 40 percent of its fuel efficiency, because your car will use too much gas. When a car has too much air, the engine is said to be running lean. When the engine doesn't get enough air, it's said to be running rich.

Is O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1 upstream or downstream?

Bank 1 Sensor 1 means Upstream Right/Rear;Bank 2 Sensor 1 means Upstream Left/Front;Bank 1 Sensor 2 means Downstream Right/Rear;Bank 2 Sensor 2 means Downstream Left/Front.

Are all oxygen sensors interchangeable?

Regular O2 sensors, now called Narrow band, output a voltage of . 1 to . 9 volts, depending on Oxygen levels in exhaust. Upstream or downstream , left or right, doesn't matter, Ford, GM, Dodge, doesn't matter, they are all interchangeable if wire and connector match up.

What does the secondary O2 sensor do?

A second oxygen sensor is now used downstream of the catalytic converter to monitor the converter's operating efficiency. On V6 or V8 engines with dual exhausts, this means up to four O2 sensors (one for each cylinder bank and one after each converter) may be used.

Can I use any O2 sensor in my car?

Unless the actual part number on the sensor is a direct and listed (published) catalog interchange for your year, make and model, the sensor will not work as intended. The other issue is unless the sensor is really old, it should be tested prior to condemning it.

Can upstream O2 sensor cause misfire?

Rough engine idle and misfires

Since the oxygen sensor output helps control engine timing, combustion intervals, and the air to fuel ratio, a bad sensor can disrupt these engine functions, causing a rough or irregular engine idle.

Are Bank 1 and Bank 2 O2 sensors the same?

Bank One is always the bank where cylinder number one is located. On the Corvette it will always be the driver side. Bank Two is the passenger side. Sensor 1 on Corvettes is always the sensor that is closest to the exhaust port of the engine.

Do O2 sensor extenders work?

O2 spacer extends the gap between the o2 sensor and the exhaust gases, with an increased gap, it will provide a lower Co2 reading. ... However, 90% of the time they will work provided the original o2 sensor is not faulty.

Does removing catalytic converter damage engine?

Other impacts of removing the converter include risking damage to the other components, primarily the oxygen sensor, which works in conjunction with the catalytic converter. This may also cause the check engine light to come on, which will cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test.

Why is my check engine light still on after changing O2 sensor?

The check engine light could be caused by more than one problem. Your oxygen sensor may have been replaced by the technician, but your spark plugs need to be replaced as well.

What is a dummy 02 sensor?

What is a dummy 02 sensor? A dummy O2 sensor is a fake one that does readings like a normal one. A dummy one sends the cars computer the proper information that a normal one would send if it were reading correctly. ... All you have to do is locate your cars current O2 sensor and unplug it.

How do you reset the check engine light after changing O2 sensor?

Turn the ignition to the “On” position but don't crank the engine (it won't start anyway). Wait five minutes and reinsert the fuse. The “Check Engine” light will blink, then shut off.

What does trouble code P0036 mean?

What the P0036 code mean? P0036 means that for the engine to operate properly, the engine exhaust should have a specific air fuel ratio of 14.7 to 1 as determined by the heated oxygen sensors (HO2S), which detects the oxygen content of the exhaust.

Is P0420 upstream or downstream?

A P0420 code indicates a problem with the catalytic converter. ... The catalytic converter has two oxygen sensors. One oxygen sensor is positioned in front (upstream) of the catalytic converter and the other O2 sensor is positioned at the rear (downstream).

Can a downstream O2 sensor cause P0420?

As such, failure of either the upstream or downstream oxygen sensor can cause code P0420 to set. The most common cause of the code, however, is a failed catalytic converter. Failure of either the upstream or downstream oxygen sensor can cause code P0420 to set.
