Most babies with omphaloceles do well. The survival rate is over 90 percent if the baby's only issue is an omphalocele. The survival rate for babies who have an omphalocele and serious problems with other organs is about 70 percent.

Can omphalocele correct itself during pregnancy?

The outcome depends on the size of omphalocele, the presence of other defects, or if there is chromosome abnormalities present or concern for a genetic syndrome. Fetuses with small or medium-sized omphaloceles and no other problems do extremely well with surgical repair after birth.

Is omphalocele life threatening?

Omphalocele is a life-threatening condition. It needs to be treated soon after birth so that the baby's organs can develop and be protected in the belly.

Can omphalocele correct itself?

Small omphaloceles are often fixed easily. They normally cause no long-term problems. Babies with damage to the abdominal organs may have long-term problems.

Why do babies get omphalocele?

Some babies have omphalocele because of a change in their genes or chromosomes. Omphalocele might also be caused by a combination of genes and other factors, such as the things the mother comes in contact with in the environment or what the mother eats or drinks, or certain medicines she uses during pregnancy.

Monitoring Babies with Abdominal Wall Defects Before Birth: Omphalocele and Gastroschisis (5 of 11)

Can a baby survive without intestines?

An infant cannot survive with his or her bowel outside of the body. After your baby is born, doctors will assess how severe the gastroschisis is.

Is omphalocele more common in males?

Omphalocele is sometimes associated with other congenital malformations which increase the newborns mortality and the defect seems to be more prevalent in male gender. The prevalence of associated anomalies is in 31 to 50% of omphaloceles or more (63 to 80%) according to the series [6, 10, 13, 16,17,18].

Is there treatment for omphalocele?

Treatment After Birth

Extremely large omphaloceles are not surgically repaired until the baby grows. They are treated by placing painless drying agents on the omphalocele membrane. Babies may stay in the hospital anywhere from one week to months after surgery, depending on the size of the defect.

Can omphalocele cause problems later in life?

They normally cause no long-term problems. Babies with damage to the abdominal organs may have long-term problems. Your child may have trouble with digestion, having bowel movements, and infection.

Is omphalocele genetic?

Omphalocele is a feature of many genetic syndromes. Nearly half of individuals with omphalocele have a condition caused by an extra copy of one of the chromosomes in each of their cells (trisomy). Up to one-third of people born with omphalocele have a genetic condition called Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.

How serious is omphalocele?

The overall outcome of isolated omphalocele is excellent: some infants may have minor intestinal problems in the first few months, but will recover from that and lead a completely normal life. Although the belly button may not look perfectly normal, there should be minimal scarring.

What is a ruptured omphalocele?

Ruptured omphalocele occurs when there is rupture of the outer membrane of an omphalocele. When this happens the eviscerated fetal bowel looks free floating and distinction from gastroschisis becomes difficult.

What causes a baby to be born with organs on the outside?

Gastroschisis occurs early during pregnancy when the muscles that make up the baby's abdominal wall do not form correctly. A hole occurs which allows the intestines and other organs to extend outside of the body, usually to the right side of belly button.

Can omphalocele be misdiagnosed?

It is mandatory to look carefully in a case of omphalocele for presence of any true abdominal wall defect, umbilical ring, and the base for presence of skin collar so that the condition is not misdiagnosed.

Can you see omphalocele in ultrasound?

Omphalocele can be detected through ultrasound from 14 weeks of gestation; however, it is easier to diagnose as the pregnancy progresses and organs can be seen outside the abdomen protruding into the amniotic cavity.

What are the long term effects of omphalocele?

Small omphaloceles normally cause no long-term problems. Babies with damage to the abdominal organs may have long-term problems. Your child may have trouble with digestion, having bowel movements, and infection.

How often is omphalocele genetic?

When an omphalocele is isolated (no other birth defects are present), the risk for it to happen in a future pregnancy is one percent or one in 100. There are some families that have been reported to have an omphalocele inherited as an autosomal dominant or X-linked recessive trait.

How long do babies with gastroschisis live?

Most of the time, gastroschisis can be fixed with one or two surgeries. After recovering from surgery, most babies with gastroschisis live normal lives. Some children may have problems with digestion later in life.

How do you cover an omphalocele?

Maintenance intravenous (IV) fluids are administered, and the intact omphalocele sac is covered with a nonadherent dressing, such as Xeroform or Saran Wrap to preserve body heat and moisture. Prophylactic antibiotics may be given preoperatively, if surgery for an associated intestinal anomaly is anticipated..

What causes a baby to be born without a skull?

Anencephaly is when the neural tube fails to close at the base of the skull. Neural tube defects may be caused by genes passed on from both parents and by environmental factors. Some of these factors include obesity, uncontrolled diabetes in the mother, and some prescription medicines.

What is the survival rate for omphalocele?

Most babies with omphaloceles do well. The survival rate is over 90 percent if the baby's only issue is an omphalocele. The survival rate for babies who have an omphalocele and serious problems with other organs is about 70 percent.

What medication causes omphalocele?

How often is omphalocele isolated?

The presence of isolated omphalocele without association to genetic defect or associated structural anomaly is estimated in 3–6.5% of all cases when it is prenatally diagnosed [3, 7].
