Contact metamorphism is thus primarily a thermal phenomenon. It may occur in diverse tectonic settings such as in orogenic or anorogenic environments, in plate interiors or along plate margins.

What is contact metamorphism Where does it happen?

Contact Metamorphism (often called thermal metamorphism) happens when rock is heated up by an intrusion of hot magma. ... Contact Metamorphism can occur on scales from a few millimetres either side of a small intrusion, to several hundred metres around a large igneous body such as a batholith.

Where do contact metamorphic rocks form?

Contact metamorphic rocks form when rocks are heated to high temperatures, usually through contact with an igneous intrusion at a relatively low pressure. The effects of contact metamorphism usually only extend for a short distance from the cooling igneous rock that is providing the heat.

Where are some of the most likely locations for metamorphism to occur?

While rocks can be metamorphosed at depth in most areas, the potential for metamorphism is greatest in the roots of mountain ranges where there is a strong likelihood for burial of relatively young sedimentary rock to great depths, as depicted in Figure 7.15.

Where are contact metamorphic rocks most likely to form?

In which location are you most likely to find contact metamorphism occurring? The Cascade Mountains.

Contact metamorphism

Where and how does metamorphism occur?

Contact metamorphism occurs anywhere that the intrusion of plutons occurs. In the context of plate tectonics theory, plutons intrude into the crust at convergent plate boundaries, in rifts, and during the mountain building that takes place where continents collide.

Where does regional metamorphism occur?

As described above, regional metamorphism occurs when rocks are buried deep in the crust. This is commonly associated with convergent plate boundaries and the formation of mountain ranges. Because burial to 10 km to 20 km is required, the areas affected tend to be large.

Where does contact metamorphism occur quizlet?

Contact metamorphism occurs when the country rock is affected by heat from an intrusion. Igneous bodies are intrude at relatively shallow depth so contact metamorphism is described as high temperature, low pressure metamorphism. High temperatures lead to recrystallised, unfoliated rocks in an aureole.

How metamorphism does occur?

Metamorphism occurs because rocks undergo changes in temperature and pressure and may be subjected to differential stress and hydrothermal fluids. Metamorphism occurs because some minerals are stable only under certain conditions of pressure and temperature. ... Temperature can also increase due to igneous intrusion.

Where does shock metamorphism occur?

Shock metamorphism exclusively occurs locally around impact craters and possibly around some diatremes. It is characterized by extremely high P/T conditions (tens of hundred of kilobars) over very short time spans. These conditions result from the passing of a shock wave through the rocks.

Where are the metamorphic rocks formed?

Metamorphic rocks are formed within the Earth's crust. Changing temperature and pressure conditions may result in changes to the mineral assemblage of the protolith. Metamorphic rocks are eventually exposed at the surface by uplift and erosion of the overlying rock.

What is the source of heat during contact metamorphism?

At shallow depths within the crust (usually less than 6 km) the heat sources responsible for contact metamorphism are bodies of hot magma (e.g. igneous intrusions) which raise the temperature of the surrounding rocks.

Where does hydrothermal metamorphism occur?

Hydrothermal Metamorphism (Fig. 8.3): typically occurs along mid-ocean ridge spreading centers where heated seawater percolates through hot, fractured basalt. Chemical reactions between the heated seawater and basalt result in metamorphism of the basalt.

Where can you find peridotite?

Peridotite is the dominant rock of the upper part of Earth's mantle. The compositions of peridotite nodules found in certain basalts and diamond pipes (kimberlites) are of special interest, because they provide samples of Earth's mantle brought up from depths ranging from about 30 km to 200 km or more.

What are the examples of contact metamorphism?

Contact metamorphism produces non-foliated (rocks without any cleavage) rocks such as marble, quartzite, and hornfels. In the diagram above magma has pushed its way into layers of limestone, quartz sandstone and shale.

Why does metamorphism happen at the site of meteor impacts?

Why does metamorphism happen at the site of meteor impacts and along mid-ocean ridges? Meteor impacts- heat and pressure is absorbed into the earth and substantial enough to cause metamorphic change. Mid Ocean Ridges- water permeates the earth's crust and hot water chemically reacts w/ the rock.

Where does high grade metamorphism occur?

Metamorphism, therefore occurs at temperatures and pressures higher than 200^oC and 300 MPa. Rocks can be subjected to these higher temperatures and pressures as they are buried deeper in the Earth. Such burial usually takes place as a result of tectonic processes such as continental collisions or subduction.

How is regional and contact metamorphism different?

Contact metamorphism is a type of metamorphism where rock minerals and texture are changed, mainly by heat, due to contact with magma. Regional metamorphism is a type of metamorphism where rock minerals and texture are changed by heat and pressure over a wide area or region.

What is regional metamorphism?

Regional metamorphism is metamorphism that occurs over broad areas of the crust. Most regionally metamorphosed rocks occur in areas that have undergone deformation during an orogenic event resulting in mountain belts that have since been eroded to expose the metamorphic rocks.

What is regional metamorphism quizlet?

Regional Metamorphism Definition. A change in a large area of rock due to heat and pressure ( movements in the earths crust)

How does burial metamorphism occur quizlet?

Metamorphism which occurs due to the increase in pressure and temperature resulting from burial (particularly within sedimentary basin systems). ... Pressure applied equally on all surfaces of the body, as a result of burial or submergence. Confining pressure is directly related to the depth of submergence.

Is regional metamorphism a localized event?

Regional metamorphism is a localized event.

Why does regional metamorphism happen?

When rocks are buried deep in the crust, regional metamorphism occurs. ... When exposed to the surface, these rocks show the incredible pressure that causes the mountain building process to bend and break the rocks. Regional metamorphism usually produces gneiss and schist-like foliated rocks.

Where are regional metamorphic rocks formed today?

Regional metamorphic rocks occur where rocks are altered by high temperatures and / or high pressures usually deep within the Earth. Regional metamorphism can affect large volumes of the crust and typically happens at convergent plate boundaries, beneath new mountain ranges.

Where and how does metamorphism occur quizlet?

Most metamorphism takes place in a zone that begins several kilometers below the surface and extends into the upper mantle. Where does most metamorphism take place? Foliated rocks are banded metamorphic rocks that form when minerals realign as the result of pressure from opposing sides.
