Who is at risk for silicosis? Factory, mine, and masonry workers are at the greatest risk for silicosis because they deal with silica in their work. People who work in the following industries are at greatest risk: asphalt manufacturing.

What occupations are at risk of developing silicosis?

The largest occupational groups exposed to silica were construction trades labourers, heavy equipment operators, and plasterers and drywallers. However, workers can also be exposed in industries such as mining, agriculture, and various manufacturing industries.

What are the causes of silicosis?

• stone masonry and stone cutting – especially with sandstone.
• construction and demolition – as a result of exposure to concrete and paving materials.
• worktop manufacturing and fitting.

How likely is it to get silicosis?

A recent study of pottery workers found high rates of silicosis, up to 20%, among workers with an average exposure of 0.2 mg/m3 over many years.

How can silicosis be prevented?

The key to preventing silicosis is to keep dust out of the air. Dust controls can be as simple as a water hose to wet the dust before it becomes airborne. Use the following methods to control respirable crystalline silica: Use the dust collection systems available for many types of dust-generating equipment.

Understanding Silicosis

What is the allowable exposure limit for silica dust?

Silica dust has a workplace exposure limit (WEL) of 0.1 mg/m3, expressed as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA). Exposure should be reduced as low a reasonably practicable, and at least below the WEL.

What is the permissible exposure limit for silica?

What is the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for respirable crystalline silica? The PEL for respirable crystalline silica is 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/M³) of air.

Does everyone exposed to silica get silicosis?

Most people get silicosis because they're exposed to silica dust at work. Jobs in these fields may put you at higher risk: Mining.

Is house dust harmful?

Dust allergies can cause wheezing, asthma attacks, bronchial infections, dermatitis and other allergy-related problems. Dust also contains chemical particles, including pesticides and other dangerous substances found in and around your home. Exposure to these may cause long-term health problems.

Can lungs clear silica dust?

As these particles damage the lungs, scar tissue forms and limits oxygen absorption. Even after exposure to silica dust ceases, the particles remain in the lungs and continue causing damage. This condition is called silicosis, and there is no cure.

What type of silica causes silicosis?

There is no cure for silicosis. Silicosis typically occurs after 15–20 years of occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica.

What are the acute effects of silicosis?

In acute silicosis, the lungs become swollen (inflamed) and can fill with fluid. This causes severe shortness of breath and low blood oxygen. In chronic silicosis, the silica dust causes areas of swelling in the lungs and chest lymph nodes, which makes breathing more difficult.

What are symptoms of silicosis?

These commonly include bronchitis-like symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. People also suffer from weakness, fatigue, fever, night sweats, leg swelling and bluish discoloration of the lips.

How often should you check for silica dust?

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has recommended examinations every 5 years for workers with less than 20 years of exposure and every 2 years if over 20 years of exposure.

Does all concrete have silica?

What construction materials contain silica? Many common construction materials contain silica including, for example, asphalt, brick, cement, concrete, drywall, grout, mortar, stone, sand, and tile.

What is pneumoconiosis caused by?

The pneumoconioses are a group of interstitial lung diseases caused by the inhalation of certain dusts and the lung tissue's reaction to the dust. The principal cause of the pneumoconioses is work-place exposure; environmental exposures have rarely given rise to these diseases.

Can living in a dusty house make you sick?

The average home collects 40 pounds of dust every year. And living in it are microscopic bugs that multiply fast and can make you sick: dust mites. "Dust mites are one of the biggest predators that live in your home," said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency room physician at New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital.

Can the air in my house make me sick?

Lack of air flow allows for indoor air pollution to build up and cause health issues like asthma or sick building syndrome. In fact, modern furnishings, synthetic building materials, and even your own carpet may carry more chemicals than expected. These chemicals can make up to 90 percent of indoor air pollution.

Can sleeping in a dusty room make you sick?

1. Dust Mites. Dust mites live in your pillows, mattress and bedding and their feces can irritate you, causing cold-like symptoms, asthma and allergies. To reduce dust mites, wash your bedding regularly, vacuum the mattress, use allergen-proof bed covers and replace your pillows once a year.

How bad is breathing in cement dust?

Crystalline silica is found in materials such as concrete, masonry and rock. When these mate- rials are made into a fine dust and suspended in the air, breathing in these fine particles can produce lung damage. Silicosis can be totally disabling and may lead to death.

Does N95 mask protect against silica?

The following describes the NIOSH policy for respiratory protection against airborne exposures to crystalline silica. NIOSH recommends the use of half-facepiece particulate respirators with N95 or better filters for airborne exposures to crystalline silica at concentrations less than or equal to 0.5 mg/m3.

Can you get silicosis one exposure?

The rarest form of the disease, known as acute silicosis, can involve a single lethal dose or many exposures to a high concentration of silica within two years or less. The silica particles land in the air sacs of the lung, leading to inflammation that causes the sacs to fill up and makes gas exchange impossible.

What is the OSHA standard for silica?

About two million construction workers are exposed to respirable crystalline silica in over 600,000 workplaces. What Does the Standard Require? The standard (29 CFR 1926.1153) requires employers to limit worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica and to take other steps to protect workers.

What is the OSHA action level for silica?

Action level means a concentration of airborne respirable crystalline silica of 25 μg/m³, calculated as an 8-hour TWA. Assistant Secretary means the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health, U.S. Department of Labor, or designee.

At what height does OSHA require fall protection?

OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at elevations of four feet in general industry workplaces, five feet in shipyards, six feet in the construction industry and eight feet in longshoring operations.
