Computer Power Supply Voltages 3.3 Volts is used to power the CPU. 12 Volts can also be applied to specific “smart” chassis fans. Power supply can convert to a 100 Volt electrical current to +12V, -12V, +5V, -5V, and +3.3 V.

What are the four voltages produced by an AT power supply?

Standard output voltages

The positive output voltages produced by a power supply unit are +3.3V, +5V and +12V. Negative voltages of -5V and -12V are also provided, together with a +5V standby voltage.

What are the 3 voltages supplied by the power supply?

The 3.3- and 5-volts are typically used by digital circuits, while the 12-volt is used to run motors in disk drives and fans. The main specification of a power supply is in watts.
...
The typical voltages supplied are:

• 3.3 volts.
• 5 volts.
• 12 volts.

What are the 4 stages of power supply?

• Transformer - steps down high voltage AC mains to low voltage AC.
• Rectifier - converts AC to DC, but the DC output is varying.
• Smoothing - smooths the DC from varying greatly to a small ripple.
• Regulator - eliminates ripple by setting DC output to a fixed voltage.

What is 3.3 volts used for?

Positive DC Voltages

Usually, the digital electronic components and circuits in the system (motherboard, adapter cards, and disk drive logic boards) use the +3.3v or +5v power, and the motors (disk drive motors and any fans) use the +12v power. Table 3.1 lists these devices and their power consumptions.

HACKED!: ATX Power Supply with Variable Output Voltage?

What are the 5 different voltages that an ATX power supply provides?

• +5V—Maximum of 22 amps (110 watts)
• +3.3V—Maximum of 14 amps (46.2 watts)
• +5V and +3.3V combined—Maximum of 125 watts.
• +12V—Maximum of 8.0 amps (96 watts)
• +-5V—Maximum of . 5 amps (2.5 watts)
• -12V—Maximum of 1 amp (12 watts)

What are the 3 main form factors for power supplies?

Today's power supply form factors are ATX, ATX12V v1. x, ATX12V v2. x, and micro-ATX.

What are the output voltages that have been commonly produced by PC power supplies?

A PC's power supply produces +3.3VDC, +5VDC, –5VDC, +12VDC, and –12VDC from a 110VAC input.

What is the range of wattage for power supplies?

All about output

Desktop power supplies have a power output rating of from 200 watts to 1800 watts (for ultra-high-end, enthusiast-class products). Wattage ratings higher than that would exceed the capabilities of a typical 15-ampere electrical outlet.

What voltage is commonly used for hard drives and optical drives?

Hard drives and optical drives commonly use +5 and +12 volts.

What is the function of 4 pin Molex P4 12V?

This Motherboard P4 12V 4-Pin to Molex 4-Pin Power Adapter Cable is used when you want to upgrade your system to a Pentium 4 (P4) system. Using this cable allows you to upgrade without having to buy a new power supply. This cable is designed with high-quality materials that allow for the best electrical conductivity.

What is the form factor of a power supply?

The shape and general physical layout of a component is called the form factor. Items that share a form factor are generally interchangeable, at least as far as their sizes and fits are concerned.

What are the different types of power supplies?

There are three major kinds of power supplies: unregulated (also called brute force), linear regulated, and switching.

What are the power supply connectors?

• 1. ( 20 + 4 Pin) ATX Power Connector. ...
• (4 + 4 Pin) ATX 12V Power Connector. Also known as CPU power connector, P4 power connector. ...
• SATA Power Connector. ...
• 4. ( ...
• (6 Pin) PCI Express Connector. ...
• (4 Pin) Floppy Drive Connector.

What voltages are provided by an ATX power supply?

Most modern computer power supplies follow the ATX convention: They output +3.3V, +5V, +12V and -12V on a series of color coded wires. Computer power supplies have a number of safety features that help to protect you and the power supply itself.

What is the difference between AT and ATX power supply?

AT-style computer cases had a power button that is directly connected to the system computer power supply. ... An ATX power supply is typically controlled by an electronic switch. Instead of a hard switch at the main power input, the power button on an ATX system is a sensor input monitored by the computer.

What is input voltage and output voltage?

The INPUT is what sort of electrical system you need to supply to the adapter (i.e. what your power company supplies). The OUTPUT is what is supplied to your device. Note that he amount of DC electrical power is calculated by multiplying the current by the voltage (P=I·V).

What are the 2 types of power supply?

Two types of power supplies exist, DC-DC and AC-DC. DC-DC power supplies allow you to plug in electrical devices into car outlets or similar sources that supply direct current, or DC, power.

Is 500W power supply enough?

A modern 500W PSU from a reputable brand will provide ample stable power at full load. You only need to go to above 500W if you plan on overclocking, using a more powerful CPU or GPU, and want to add additional hardware. The best power supply doesn't necessarily need to have the highest power output.

How does a power supply work?

A power supply takes the AC from the wall outlet, converts it to unregulated DC, and reduces the voltage using an input power transformer, typically stepping it down to the voltage required by the load. For safety reasons, the transformer also separates the output power supply from the mains input.

What does the power supply do?

Specifically, a power supply converts the alternating high voltage current (AC) into direct current (DC), and they also regulate the DC output voltage to the fine tolerances required for modern computing components.

What is the function of p4 power connector?

1. The P4 connector is a 12V power supply cable used with motherboards that have an Intel Pentium 4 or later processor. Today, the connector is a standard power connector and is used with both Intel and AMD motherboards.

What voltage is SATA power?

SATA power cable

SATA includes both a data cable and a power cable. The power cable replaces the old 4 pin peripheral cable and adds support for 3.3 volts (if fully implemented). The connector is shaped so it can only be plugged in the correct way.
