Stars are not scattered randomly through space, they are gathered together into vast groups known as galaxies. The Sun belongs to a galaxy called the Milky Way. Astronomers estimate there are about 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone. Outside that, there are millions upon millions of other galaxies also!

How many Milky Ways are in the universe?

All in all, Hubble reveals an estimated 100 billion galaxies in the universe or so, but this number is likely to increase to about 200 billion as telescope technology in space improves, Livio told Space.com.

Are there other Milky Ways?

Only three galaxies outside our own Milky Way Galaxy can be seen without a telescope, and appear as fuzzy patches in the sky with the naked eye. The closest galaxies that we can see without a telescope are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

Is the Milky Way always there?

The Milky Way does not sit still, but is constantly rotating. As such, the arms are moving through space. The sun and the solar system travel with them. ... Even at this rapid speed, the solar system would take about 230 million years to travel all the way around the Milky Way.

How Milky Ways are there?

Our Milky Way galaxy is one of billions in the universe. We do not know exactly how many galaxies exist: a modern estimate vastly increases previous counts to as many as 2 trillion. The Milky Way is approximately 100,000 light-years across, or 600,000 trillion miles (950,000 trillion km).

Our Universe Has Trillions of Galaxies, Hubble Study

How many black holes are in the Milky Way?

Most stellar black holes, however, are very difficult to detect. Judging from the number of stars large enough to produce such black holes, however, scientists estimate that there are as many as ten million to a billion such black holes in the Milky Way alone.

Do black holes swallow planets?

Answer: Black Holes swallow anything that gets trapped in its voracious gravitational pull. Stars, gas, dust, planets, moons, etc. can all be swallowed by a Black Hole.

What exists beyond the universe?

The universe, being all there is, is infinitely big and has no edge, so there's no outside to even talk about. Oh, sure, there's an outside to our observable patch of the universe. The cosmos is only so old, and light only travels so fast. ... The current width of the observable universe is about 90 billion light-years.

Is there a black hole in Milky Way?

For several years the scientific community has agreed that there is a mass at the center of the Milky Way galaxy and that the mass is a supermassive black hole—it has been named Sagittarius A*.

Where is Earth in the Milky Way?

Earth is located in one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way (called the Orion Arm) which lies about two-thirds of the way out from the center of the Galaxy. Here we are part of the Solar System - a group of eight planets, as well as numerous comets and asteroids and dwarf planets which orbit the Sun.

What universe do we live in?

Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, contains at least 100 billion stars, and the observable universe contains at least 100 billion galaxies. If galaxies were all the same size, that would give us 10 thousand billion billion (or 10 sextillion) stars in the observable universe.

Can Milky Way galaxy be seen from Earth?

The Milky Way is visible from Earth as a hazy band of white light, some 30° wide, arching the night sky. In night sky observing, although all the individual naked-eye stars in the entire sky are part of the Milky Way Galaxy, the term "Milky Way" is limited to this band of light.

Can you see the Milky Way with your eyes?

More than 100,000 light years in diameter, with more than 100 billion stars and at least as many planets, the Milky Way is arguably the most impressive feature of the night sky that you can see with the naked eye. ... Then you'll need a clear night sky with little to no fog or humidity.

Do stars exist outside of galaxies?

Although stars cannot form in the voids between galaxies (since the density of matter is far too low), there are in fact large numbers of 'intergalactic stars'. It has been estimated, for example, that 10 per cent of the mass of the Virgo galaxy cluster is in the form of these stellar interlopers.

Are there other galaxies?

By using the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have estimated that some 100 billion galaxies must exist in the cosmos. ... Probably some 2 trillion galaxies existed in the early universe, but it seems clear that galaxies near each other are drawn together by gravity and combine over cosmic time.

Are there planets in other galaxies?

Nearly 5,000 "exoplanets" - worlds orbiting stars beyond our Sun - have been found so far, but all of these have been located within the Milky Way galaxy. The possible Saturn-sized planet discovered by Nasa's Chandra X-Ray Telescope is in the Messier 51 galaxy.

Can a wormhole exist?

In the early days of research on black holes, before they even had that name, physicists did not yet know if these bizarre objects existed in the real world. The original idea of a wormhole came from physicists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen. ...

Is our galaxy in a black hole?

Observational evidence indicates that almost every large galaxy has a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's center. The Milky Way has a supermassive black hole in its Galactic Center, which corresponds to the location of Sagittarius A*.

What is a white black hole?

White holes were long thought to be a figment of general relativity born from the same equations as their collapsed star brethren, black holes. ... Physicists describe a white hole as a black hole's "time reversal," a video of a black hole played backwards, much as a bouncing ball is the time reversal of a falling ball.

Why is space black?

Because space is a near-perfect vacuum — meaning it has exceedingly few particles — there's virtually nothing in the space between stars and planets to scatter light to our eyes. And with no light reaching the eyes, they see black.

Where does space end?

Interplanetary space extends to the heliopause, whereupon the solar wind gives way to the winds of the interstellar medium. Interstellar space then continues to the edges of the galaxy, where it fades into the intergalactic void.

Is time Travelling possible?

In Summary: Yes, time travel is indeed a real thing. But it's not quite what you've probably seen in the movies. Under certain conditions, it is possible to experience time passing at a different rate than 1 second per second.

Will Earth ever run into a black hole?

There is no danger of the Earth (located 26,000 light years away from the Milky Way's black hole) being pulled in. ... But collisions won't happen indefinitely because the universe is big and because it's expanding, and so it's very unlikely that any sort of black hole runaway effect will occur.

Will the Earth be pulled into a black hole?

Will Earth be swallowed by a black hole? Absolutely not. While a black hole does have an immense gravitational field, they are only “dangerous” if you get very close to them. ... It would get very dark of course and very cold, but the black hole's gravity at our distance from it would not be a concern.

Will Earth enter a black hole?

If a black hole were to form from the Earth itself, it would create an event horizon just 1.7 centimeters in diameter. ... If, somehow, the electromagnetic and quantum forces holding the Earth up against gravitational collapse were turned off, Earth would quickly become a black hole.
