Total biomass in temperate deciduous forests is, therefore, about 190 to 380 metric tons per hectare. ... For temperate forests gross primary productivity (the total biomass fixed by the vegetation in a unit area within a unit time) has been estimated at 16 to 50 metric tons per hectare per year.

Are temperate forests fertile?

The soil in temperate forests are thick and fertile as the forest floor is covered by trees and there is a vast wildlife.

What are the characteristics of temperate forest?

The temperate forest biome is one of the world's major habitats. Temperate forests are characterized as regions with high levels of precipitation, humidity, and a variety of deciduous trees. Deciduous trees are trees that lose their leaves in winter.

What is special about temperate forest?

Temperate deciduous forests are most notable because they go through four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Leaves change color (or senesce) in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back in the spring; this adaptation allows plants to survive cold winters.

What are 5 facts about temperate forest?

• Many animals have sharp claws to climb trees such as squirrels, opossums, and raccoons.
• Much of the forests in Western Europe are gone due to overdevelopment. ...
• A single oak tree can produce 90,000 acorns in one year.

The Temperate Forest Biome - Biomes#6

Does the temperate rainforest have high or low biodiversity?

The cooler temperatures mean that temperate rainforests are not as biodiverse as tropical rainforests. This means they contain fewer different species of plants and animals. The coniferous temperate rainforests of the U.S. Pacific coast have the highest levels of biomass of any place on earth.

How do you explain temperate forest to kids?

A place that has regular seasons of warm and cold weather is called a temperate climate. Forests that grow here are known as temperate forests. In areas with cold winters, such as New England, Canada and Europe, most of the forests have deciduous trees.

Why is the temperate forest important?

The temperate forests are globally important and unique. They host the largest and oldest organisms in the world. They serve as the world's major source of timber and wood products and are perhaps the only forests with some proven potential for sustainable management.

How have plants adapted to temperate forests?

Temperate Deciduous Forest Plant Adaptations

have thin, broad, light-weight leaves that can capture a lot of sunlight to make a lot of food for the tree in warm weather; when the weather gets cooler, the broad leaves cause too much water loss and can be weighed down by too much snow, so the tree drops its leaves.

What is the climate of a temperate forest?

The average temperature in temperate deciduous forests is 50°F (10°C). Summers are mild, and average about 70°F (21°C), while winter temperatures are often well below freezing. ... In the cold winter, deciduous trees and plants go into dormancy, kind of like sleep.

What makes a temperate forest a temperate forest?

Temperate forest, vegetation type with a more or less continuous canopy of broad-leaved trees. Such forests occur between approximately 25° and 50° latitude in both hemispheres.

Is a temperate forest hot or cold?

It's warm in the summer, but it gets cool in the fall, and cold in the winter. Most temperate forests don't get as much rainfall as tropical rainforests, but they do get enough rain—about 30 to 60 inches each year—to grow big trees.

What are the differences between a temperate and a tropical rainforest?

Tropical rainforests are found closer to the equator where it is warm. Temperate rainforests are found near the cooler coastal areas further north or south of the equator. The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long.

Do temperate deciduous forests have good soil?

Typical temperate deciduous forest soils are mull soils, which have a high level of organic matter especially close to the surface that is well mixed with mineral matter. Variations in soil materials and fertility have a strong influence on the types of trees that will dominate the forest.

Is temperate deciduous forest soil fertile?

As the leaves decompose, the nutrients contained in the leaves are absorbed by the soil. For this reason, the soils of this biome tend to be very fertile. Because this biome has fertile soil and a long, 5 to 6 month, growing season, many deciduous forests have been converted into agricultural regions.

Why the soil in the temperate forest is more fertile compared to tropical forest?

Millions of years of weathering have washed most of the nutrients out of the soil. Despite the amount of vegetation in the rainforest, the soil contains less organic matter than that of temperate forests, because the warm humid conditions encourage faster decay and recycling of nutrients back into living forest.

What type of plants live in temperate forests?

Temperate deciduous forests have a great variety of plant species. Most have three levels of plants. Lichen, moss, ferns, wildflowers and other small plants can be found on the forest floor. Shrubs fill in the middle level and hardwood trees like maple, oak, birch, magnolia, sweet gum and beech make up the third level.

What type of plants are in the temperate rainforest?

Mosses, spike mosses, ferns and lichens festoon tree trunks and branches, giving the forest a "jungle-like" feel. Large, old trees. The dominant species are Sitka spruce and western hemlock, but other conifers and several deciduous species grow as well.

What are the characteristics of temperate deciduous forest?

• Deciduous forests have a long, warm growing season as one of four distinct seasons.
• There is abundant moisture.
• The soil typically is rich. ...
• Tree leaves are arranged in strata: canopy, understory, shrub, and ground.

How do temperate forests help the environment?

What's at stake? The temperate forests of Russia, North America, Chile and Europe help absorb the gases that cause climate change, give us timber and paper products, and provide jobs for many people. They're also a home for many species, from trees and flowers, to birds and butterflies, wolves and bears.

How can temperate forests be conserved?

You can help protect and restore the temperate forest by purchasing paper and wood products that are FSC certified for your home and business. These are products that have come from sustainably managed forests, where trees are replanted and not clear cut.

What are some threats to the temperate forest?

Unsustainable forestry targeting the largest trees, road construction and other development related activities are the biggest threat to our temperate rainforests. Industrial-scale logging of old-growth forest destroy this rare habitat, which then takes centuries to return.

Is the temperate deciduous forest highly productive?

Although not to the level of their tropical counterparts, temperate deciduous forests typically display high plant biodiversity and rates of net primary productivity. They contrast sharply, however, with tropical forests in the distribution of biodiversity and productivity.

What are some fun facts about the temperate deciduous forest?

Interesting Temperate Deciduous Forest Biome Facts:

The temperate deciduous forest gets its name because the temperatures are temperate meaning they are not extreme. Temperate deciduous forests receive 30 - 60 inches of rain each year and are ranked second only to the rainforest as the rainiest biome.

Does the temperate forest have a high biodiversity?

A Temperate Decidous Forest contains many species of plants and animals some of which can be seen on the cycles or the food web and trophic pyramids pages. Fortunatly most temperate decidous forests have a very high biodiversity index. ... This is because the biome houses a very high density of plant life.
