The high gas content and high viscosity of these magmas are perfect for producing an explosive eruption. The viscosity can be so high that the gas can only escape by blasting the magma from the vent.

Is rhyolite effusive or explosive?

Magma with the composition of rhyolite is extremely viscous, due to its high silica content. This favors explosive eruptions over effusive eruptions, so rhyolitic magma is more often erupted as pyroclastic rock than as lava flows.

Are rhyolitic volcanoes explosive?

Rhyolitic eruptions are most likely to be explosive. The material blown out of a volcano is called pyroclastic debris, or tephra. Bubbles that form quickly in a huge mass of sticky rhyolitic magma can shatter into a froth of innumerable tiny glass-walled bubbles, producing a rock called pumice.

Why are rhyolitic eruptions the most explosive?

Lavas and pyroclastics are usually andesitic to rhyolitic in composition. Due to the higher viscosity of magmas erupted from these volcanoes, they are usually more explosive than shield volcanoes.

Are rhyolite eruptions explosive quizlet?

Are rhyolite eruptions always explosive? No, sometimes they produce lava domes that erupt very slowly over many years. ... Effusive volcanoes are those with low viscosity lavas that are likely _____ in composition.

The Most Dangerous Type of Eruptions - Flood Volcanism explained

Why is rhyolite lava so explosive quizlet?

- Basaltic magmas tend to be fairly fluid (low viscosity). - Rhyolitic magmas tend to have even higher viscosity. as it moves toward the surface can make it explosive.

Which magma is least likely to generate explosive eruptions?

Effusive (Non-explosive) Eruptions

Non explosive eruptions are favored by low gas content and low viscosity magmas (basaltic to andesitic magmas). If the viscosity is low, non-explosive eruptions usually begin with fire fountains due to release of dissolved gases.

What type of eruption is the most explosive?

The largest and most violent of all the types of volcanic eruptions are Plinian eruptions. They are caused by the fragmentation of gassy magma, and are usually associated with very viscous magmas (dacite and rhyolite).

How does rhyolite erupt?

It flows slowly, like tooth paste squeezed out of a tube, and tends to pile up and form lava domes. If rhyolite magma is gas rich it can erupt explosively, forming a frothy solidified magma called pumice (a very lightweight, light-coloured, vesicular form of rhyolite) along with ash deposits, and / or ignimbrite.

Which type of volcanic eruption is very explosive?

Phreatic eruptions pulverise surrounding rocks and can produce ash, but do not include new magma. An eruption resulting from the interaction of new magma or lava with water and can be very explosive.

Is Rhyolite a mineral or rock?

Rhyolite is a fine-grained extrusive igneous rock or volcanic rock. It is pale coloured, often light grey, tan or pinkish. Rhyolite is made up of quartz and feldspar crystals, and occasionally contains some mafic (dark coloured) minerals.

What is a rhyolitic eruption?

Rhyolitic lavas are viscous and tend to form thick blocky lava flows or steep-sided piles of lava called lava domes. Rhyolite magmas tend to erupt explosively, commonly also producing abundant ash and pumice.

What type of volcano does rhyolite come from?

Rhyolite usually forms in continental or continent-margin volcanic eruptions where granitic magma reaches the surface. Rhyolite is rarely produced at oceanic eruptions.

What is the difference between explosive eruption and effusive eruption?

If lava is flowing out of the volcano, we would call this an effusive eruption. On the other hand, when gas and broken fragments are shot up into the atmosphere, the magma has literally exploded before falling back to Earth. If the magma has been blown to pieces, we would call this an explosive eruption.

Why are some eruptions explosive and some effusive?

Volcanic eruptions can be explosive, sending ash, gas and lava high up into the atmosphere, or the magma can form lava flows, known as effusive eruptions. Whether an eruption is explosive or effusive largely depends upon the amount of gas in the magma.

Is rhyolite fast or slow cooling?

That is, if the rate of cooling is very slow a granite will form. The same melt, cooled rapidly, will form a rhyolite.

Which of the following are differences between an eruption column and pyroclastic flow?

a pyroclastic flow rises higher into the atmosphere than eruption column. ... a pyroclastic flow forms when the gas flux cannot support the column.

What makes andesite explosive?

Andesites contain crystals composed primarily of plagioclase feldspar and one or more of the minerals pyroxene (clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene) and lesser amounts of hornblende. ... Andesite magma can also generate strong explosive eruptions to form pyroclastic flows and surges and enormous eruption columns.

What kind of volcanic eruption is least explosive?

Shield volcanoes tend to be the least explosive volcanoes.

What would a non explosive eruption look like?

Non-explosive type eruptions mostly produce various types of lava, such as a'a, pāhoehoe and pillow lavas. Some signs that a volcano may soon erupt include earthquakes, surface bulging, gases emitted as well as other changes that can be monitored by scientists.

Which characteristic of magma determines its explosiveness?

Viscosity, together with the amount of gas dissolved in magma, can determine the explosivity of the eruption. More viscous magma with volatiles is more explosive than less viscous magma, where gases can bubble out relatively easily.

Which of the following settings has the most explosive volcanic eruptions?

Subduction Zone Volcanism

Most explosive eruptions occur in volcanoes above subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath the other. Eighty to 120 kilometers below the surface, magma forms when the rocks of the mantle melt just above the subducting plate.

Which type of volcano is the most powerful and explosive?

Stratovolcanoes are considered the most violent. Mount St. Helens, in Washington state, is a stratovolcano that erupted on May 18, 1980.
